Locally Advanced Breast Cancer in Jamaica: Prevalence, Disease Characteristics and Response to Preoperative Therapy

  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Jamaican women. Locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) is associated with aggressive biology and poor prognosis, and has a predilection for African-American women. In this retrospective review, we assessed the prevalence of LABC as a breast cancer presentation in a population of mainly Afro-centric ethnicity, and determined disease characteristics and response to pre-operative chemotherapy. LABC was prevalent (20%), and had a low pathological response rate to pre-operative chemotherapy, with a high risk of disease recurrence. Increased utilization of breast cancer screening may help detect cancer at less advanced stages, and optimizing pre-operative chemotherapy is recommended to improve response rates and ultimately survival.

  • Korean government is trying to adopt 'CM at Risk(CMR)' method to solve some problems of traditional project delivery method such as cost increase, delay, low quality. Pre-construction service(PCS) is a project management methodology of CMR and BIM is the best tool for efficient PCS execution. PCS is consisted of several main items such as Target costing, Cost trending, GMP, Design optimization, Constructability review and Productivity. The purpose of this research is to analyse contractor's PCS application case result and to find improvement items.

The Dharma of Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay in Mammalian Cells

  • Mammalian-cell messenger RNAs (mRNAs) are generated in the nucleus from precursor RNAs (pre-mRNAs, which often contain one or more introns) that are complexed with an array of incompletely inventoried proteins. During their biogenesis, pre-mRNAs and their derivative mRNAs are subject to extensive cis-modifications. These modifications promote the binding of distinct polypeptides that mediate a diverse array of functions needed for mRNA metabolism, including nuclear export, inspection by the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) quality-control machinery, and synthesis of the encoded protein product. Ribonucleoprotein complex (RNP) remodeling through the loss and gain of protein constituents before and after pre-mRNA splicing, during mRNA export, and within the cytoplasm facilitates NMD, ensuring integrity of the transcriptome. Here we review the mRNP rearrangements that culminate in detection and elimination of faulty transcripts by mammalian-cell NMD.

중학교 1학년 상태변화 실험수행과정에서 나타난 예비과학교사의 논증구조 및 이에 영향을 미치는 요인과 예비교사교육에 대한 인식 분석 (An Analysis of Pre-Service Science Teachers' Argument Structures, the Factors Affecting the Practice of State Change Experiment in 7th Grade and Cognition of Pre-Service Education)

  • 이 연구에서는 중등 교육과정의 실험을 수행하는 과정에서 예비과학교사의 논증구조를 분석함으로써 예비과학교사의 탐구 능력과 탐구에 대한 인식을 조사하고자 한다. 사범대학교 4학년에 재학 중인 예비과학교사 9명을 대상으로 하였으며, 중학교 1학년 과학교과서의 상태변화에 관한 실험을 수행하였다. 예비교사들의 실험 보고서는 Toulmin의 논증구조를 분석틀로 분석되었다. 또한 설문지를 통해 과학과 실험에 대한 인식조사를 하였으며, 반구조화된 면담을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 예비교사들의 논증에는 과학지식의 결핍, 탐구 능력 미흡, 오차에 대한 신념, 추가 근거자료가 영향을 미쳤다. 이러한 연구결과를 통해 예비교사들의 실험 탐구능력 수준은 미흡하며, 예비교사 교육과정을 재구성하여 교사교육 프로그램을 통해 탐구 실험을 경험할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 필요가 있다고 주장하였다.

노년기 우울과 죽음불안 감소를 위한 생애회고적 이야기치료 집단프로그램의 효과 (Effects of the Life Review-Narrative Group Therapy Program on Decreasing Depression and Death Anxiety in the Elderly)

  • This study was to verify the effectiveness of the Life Review-Narrative group therapy program on decreasing depression and death anxiety in the elderly. The program was organized according to a course of life from childhood to old age. The objectives were for the elderly to enhance self-worth, to become aware of their solitary existence, to accept aging and death, to accept the life: both past and present, and to make the most of experiences in overcoming difficulties. For the most part, the program used reminiscence and re-authoring of the narrative therapy as counseling techniques. Thirty-two elderly people(16 in the experimental group, 16 in the control group) aged 60 years and over were randomly selected from patients at the Daegu Metropolitan City General Welfare Center. Two groups were identified as equivalents for the study in the pre-test. The program for the experimental group was implemented twice a week for 90 minutes per session over a 6-week period(Sep. 8-Oct.14. 2005). The pre-test(Sep. 8 2005), the post-test(Oct. 14. 2005) and the follow-up test(Nov. 14. 2005) were implemented in order to verify the effectiveness of the programs. The instruments used in the study were the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form(Korean Version) and the Death Anxiety Scale. The data were analyzed using t-testing and One-Factor Repeated Measures ANOVA. This study supplemented other qualitative research methods in order to verify the variation in the depression and death anxiety in the elderly. The findings of the study were as follows: Significant decrease in the depression and death anxiety were reported in the experimental group. The control group however did not show any significant changes in the depression and death anxiety rates. The result of the post hoc multiple comparisons showed that the effects of the life review-narrative group therapy program has lasted effects on decreasing of the death anxiety. Nevertheless, the effects of the life review-narrative group therapy program on decreasing depression are not lasting. The study has limitations so further research is suggested.

  • 자간전증은 전세계적으로 모성 및 주산기 사망과 이환의 주된 원인이나 아직까지 병인기전은 명확하게 규명되지 않은 실정이다. 자간전증은 일반적으로 두 단계 질환으로 알려져 있으며, 그 임상의 첫 단계는 모체의 나선동맥의 얕은 세포영양아층 침투에 의한 태반 부전이 발생한다. 태반 부전에 의한 허혈성 태반이 모체의 순환 혈류 내로 용해성 인자와 싸이토카인, 영양막 조직파편을 유리하면, 전신적인 내피세포 손상 및 기능 부전을 야기하고, 이로 인하여 자간전증 이차 단계인 모체 증후군이 나타난다. 역학적 연구에서 자간전증에 대한 유전적 소인이 일관되게 증명되었다. 집중적 연구 노력에 의한 감수성 유전자 발견은 자간전증의 병태생리를 이해하는데 있어서 유용한 정보를 줄 것이며 자간전증의 치료 및 예방 방법에 대한 방향을 제시할 것이다. 본 주제에서는 자간전증의 병태생리에 있어서 유전적 요인의 역할에 대한 최신 이해를 요약하고 자간전증의 유전적 실마리를 찾기 위한 분자적 접근에 대해 설명하고자 한다.

가상공간을 활용한 예비교사 수업실습 프로그램 개발 (Developing a teaching practice program for pre-service teachers using a virtual space)

  • 이 연구는 가상공간과 수업실습의 특성을 반영하여 가상공간을 활용한 예비교사 수업실습 프로그램을 개발하는 것이다. 이를 위해 문헌연구와 예비연구를 통해 가상공간에서의 수업실습 프로그램 개발 목표, 수업실습 팀 편성, 수업실습 조건이 분석되었다. 이러한 예비 연구를 기반으로 최종 개발된 실습 프로그램의 효과 검증을 위하여 99명의 예비교사에게 이 프로그램이 적용되었으며, 이 중 46명의 예비교사가 평가에 참여하였다. 평가 결과 이 프로그램은 예비교사들의 교수효능감에 긍정적 변화를 가져온 것으로 나타났다. 이 프로그램이 교사양성과정에서 효과적으로 사용되고, 학교현장에서의 실제적 수업실습에 연계되어 활용되기를 기대한다.

예비초등교사들의 시스템사고 능력 및 특성에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Abilities and Characteristics of the Systems Thinking for Pre-service Elementary Teachers)

  • This study focused on the analysis of the abilities and characteristics of the systems thinking for pre-service elementary teachers. Systems thinking is defined as the ability to see the world as a complex system in which one understands that everything is connected to everything else. For this study, 345 subjects carrying of the 2nd grade were selected and participated in making out the protocol developed by Sweeney and Sterman(2000) for the estimating ability of the systems thinking. As a result, the proportion of the correct answers based on the total points of view was 63%. However, the proportion of correct answer was considerably different according to the gender. The women group showed 53%, while the men group was 76%. Especially, there was a great difference in the rates of correct answer depending on their academic tracks of the humanities or natural science courses in the high school. The average rates of the correct answers for the natural science and the human science were 84 and 46%, respectively. Consequently, the ability of the systems thinking for pre-service elementary teachers is highly related with their gender and learning experience in the high school. The results of this study may contribute the practical use of the systems thinking in the area of the science education.

Shmuel N. Eisenstadt and the Comparative Political History of Pre-Eighteenth-Century Empires

  • This essay critically analyses the legacy of Eisenstadt's The Political Systems of Empires for the comparative political history of pre-industrial empires. It argues that Eisenstadt has given us a rich toolkit to conceptualize the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of empires by theorizing the structural relationships between social groups in large-scale polities and among such polities, and by analysing global patterns of development in the distribution of the sources of social power. The Political Systems of Empires provides an inventory of key questions and dynamics that a comparative history of power relationships in empires cannot ignore. This essay, furthermore, discusses three methodological problems in Eisenstadt's work which have had a significant impact on comparative empire studies between the 1980s and the 2000s. The essay argues that certain shared features of comparative studies of pre-industrial empires help perpetuate Eurocentric analyses: the foregrounding of select empires and periods as ideal types (typicality), the focus on macro-historical structures and dynamics without the integration of social relationships and actions in historical conjunctures (the lack of scalability), and the search for convergence and divergence. These features need to be overcome to make Eisenstadt's legacy viable for comparative political history.

주거공간 내에서의 유아의 프라이버시 욕구 (Pre-school Children′s Privacy Needs in the Residential Space)

  • This study has been performed to review pre-school children's needs for privacy within normal residential space. In this study, there were three circumstances in which children need to stay alone without being interrupted by their parents; First, they strongly want to be stay quiet until relieving their anger or fear, shortly after disciplined and impugned by their parents. Second, infant children need to obtain their own territory in order to demonstrate ownership and dignity in their sley space. Third, there are also special circumstances of privacy needs among families with intrusive parents such as alcoholics and heavy smokers, or for the children of disability. In Korea, it is presumed that more than 60 percent the pre-school children aging three to six are in deficit of privacy for relieving their emotional disturbance, but no research has been documented for the case of disabled or interrupted children. Therefore in this study, it was primarily proposed that empirical studies need to be peformed among Korean preschoolers, in order to evaluate privacy needs in the perspectives of ordinary family lives, individual household behaviors, and special conditions of disability or offensive family members.
