A Study on Weatherability with Particle Size and Orientation of Aluminum in Pre-painted Basecoat for Automotive (자동차용 선도장 베이스코트에서 알루미늄 입자 크기와 배향에 따른 내후성 연구)

  • Weatherability was examined according to aluminum particle size and its orientation used in PCM(Paint Coated Metal). Substrate delamination was checked by different UV transmission rate with QUV$^{(R)}$ (Q-LAB) equipment that can make accelerated UV irradiation. Film was prepared using three different types of conflake aluminum pastes under a PCM coating process and clearcoat was sprayed. UV transmission test results showed low transmission rate when EKART #790 having the smallest particle size and horizontal orientation was used. From the gloss retention results, gloss retention was highest in EKART #790 and followed by #770, #750.

Dynamics and Instability of a Polymeric Paint in Roll Coating Process for Automotive Pre-coating Application (자동차 선도장을 위한 롤코팅 공정에서 고분자 도료의 동적 거동 및 불안정성)

  • 3-Roll coating process as a key application technology for manufacturing automotive pre-painted metal-sheets has been studied. The 3-Roll coating system for this study consists of pick-up roll for picking up and distributing coating liquid from the reservoir, metering roll to properly meter coating liquid in metering gap regime, and applicator roll for directly transferring liquid into metal-sheet surface. Flow dynamics and operable coating windows of a polymeric paint (primer) with shear-thinning rheological property have been correlated with processing parameters such as speed ratio and metering gap between pick-up and metering rolls. In the uniform coating regime, dry coating thickness increased with increasing metering gap or decreasing speed ratio. Ribbing and cascade instabilities were observed in low speed and high speed ratio conditions, respectively. It is revealed that lower speed ratio makes severity and wavelength of the ribbing increase, aggravating flow instability in coating systems.

Change of Ice Resistance of Ice-Breaking Tanker According to Frictional Coefficient (빙마찰계수에 따른 쇄빙탱커의 빙저항 변화)

  • This study describes the model tests in ice according to the frictional coefficient of an ice-breaking ship and the change in ice resistance by the analysis method for each component of ice resistances. The target vessel is a 90K DWT ice-breaking tanker capable of operating in ARC7 ice conditions in the Arctic Ocean, and twin POD propellers are fitted. The hull was specially painted with four different frictional coefficients on the same ship model. The total ice resistance can be separated by ice breaking, ice buoyancy, ice clearing resistances through the tests in level ice, pre-sawn ice and creep test in pre-sawn ice under sea ice thickness of 1.2 m and 1.7 m. Ice resistance was analyzed by correcting the thickness and bending strength of model ice by the ITTC correction method. As the frictional coefficient between the hull and ice increases, ice buoyancy and clearing resistances increase significantly. When the surface of the hull is rough, it is considered that the broken ice pieces do not slip easily to the side, resulting in an increase in ice buoyancy resistance. Also, the frictional coefficient was found to have a great influence on the ice clearing resistance as the ice thickness became thicker.

  • An International Convention on the control of harmful anti-fouling system on ships(AFS Convention) was adopted on 5 October 2001 at Diplomatic Conference in London, and is expected to be presently effectuated with ratification of more than 25-member nations possessing about 25% of total world tonnage. This convention regulates the operation of harmful anti-fouling system and especially prohibits the use of organotin compounds contained in anti-fouling paint. Organotin compounds have a tendency to be easily extracted by specific solvents and have high polarity and low volatility as specific characteristics. This drives us to attempt of going through the process named derivatization that is required in analysis using a gas chromatography(GC). This study was conducted to determine the proper pre-treatment method, ethylation in comparison with hydridization on the analysis of tributyltin in organotin compounds and to verify the application of the method through the experimental analysis practically used anti-fouling paint and painted layer sample of the served ship.
