  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of using the relapse prevention program for adult substance addicts. Based on the results from the study of educational needs for the relapse prevention program among substance addicts the 10-session-relapse prevention program was developed. Then the researcher conducted the relapse prevention program for 15 adult methamphetamine addicts from Aug. 3 1999 to Sep. 4 1999 at the probation office in Suwon, South Korea. For examining the effectiveness of using that relapse prevention program the Social Adjustment Scale-Self Report(SAS-SR), McMullin Addiction Thought Scale(MAT), and Self Esteem Rating Scale(SERS) were used whether or not their social adjustment level, self-esteem level, and addiction thought level were improved. This study employed one group pre-post test research design as a quantitative purpose and in-depth interview as a qualitative purpose. For a qualitative purpose in-depth interview was conducted in not only between sessions but also after sessions dealing with their current life problems. For a quantitative purpose the analysis strategy employed here was frequency and t-test. Results shows that addicts who took the relapse prevention program consistently reported the improvement of their social adjustment level, self-esteem level, and addiction thought level although there were no statistically significant between pre and post tests. The implication of study findings will be discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of background knowledge on problem solving. To achieve this aim, I proposed the model which shows problem solving process centering around background knowledge, conducted the lessons concerning the concept 'weightlessness' on pre-service elementary teachers, and then classified the pre-service elementary teachers into several groups by the difference of the results presented in the process of solving the problems on weightlessness. And I examined qualitatively the effects of background knowledge on problem solving through the interview with 11 volunteers. On the cause of the failing the problem solving, the failure of acquiring or activating the background knowledge related to the learning concept was most frequently, secondly the use of the background knowledge unrelated to the learning concept, and thirdly the failure of understanding the teaming concept. To acquire or activate the background knowledge related to the teaming concept was more difficult than to understand the new teaming concept, and the cases that use the background knowledge unrelated to the learning concept failed to solve problem. The result of interview, all interviewee understood the learning concept correctly, but all of them who fail to acquire or activate the background knowledge related to the learning concept, or use the background knowledge unrelated to the learning concept, could not solve the problem.

  • Informal networks between individuals are widely seen as important in East Asian business systems. However, while the performance implications of guanxi in China have been extensively studied, much less is known on how informal networks may influence business outcomes in other East Asian countries. We examine informal networks in inter-organizational research collaborations in South Korea by studying the role of pre-existing social ties and relational orientation in new product development (NPD) collaborations and university-industry research (UIR) collaborations. We conduct an interview-based, in-depth case analysis of five NPD collaborations and five UIR collaborations. Pre-existing social ties and relational orientation are prevalent in both types of research collaborations. However, they have different consequences for collaboration outcomes. Pre-existing social ties strongly vary in their types and strength, and negatively affect collaboration outcomes unless they result in the selection of competent and motivated partners. Relational orientation manifests itself in a task-related and social exchange between collaboration partners, which contributes to outcomes such as knowledge acquisition and business performance. Korean collaboration managers should rely only on pre-existing social ties that are well-aligned with task-related requirements when initiating and conducting research collaborations. However, the creation of strong relationships between collaboration team members of partnering organizations should be encouraged.

Most of the pre service teachers show their intermediate understanding level about the earth inner construction according to the analyzed results of the drawing tasks and interviews. The main alternative conceptions show them through a definition of the plate, a wording definition between lithosphere and asthenosphere, a feature of the plate boundary, a heat convection in the earth inner, the earth inner heat source, the earth inner structure, a physical feature of the mantle.

To this end, interviews were conducted with four university students in their 4th year of study at 'G' Education University in Gwangju, also their teaching plans and class implementation videos were analyzed. Interview questions were divided into the science class planning stage, the science class implementation stage, and the post-science class implementation stage, and the interview contents were transcribed and categorized after recording. The results of the study are as follows. First, in the science class planning stage, pre-service elementary teachers considered the degree of elementary students' familiarity when choosing digital teaching and learning tools to foster digital literacy. While writing the teaching plan, it was difficult to set standards related to fostering digital literacy. Second, while pre-service elementary teachers had positive experiences such as improving students' participation in classes and increasing student-specific guidance through real-time data sharing, class time was exceeded due to poor use of digital teaching and learning tools.
