  • Current trends in steel construction include using tapered, non-compact sections to minimize the use of excess material as much as possible by choosing the cross-sections instead of the classical approach of using prismatic members. In addition, snug conditions, especially the end-plate type, have the advantage of incurring less construction costs and shorter assembly times as opposed to full pre-tensioned conditions. On the other hand, it is important to predict the collapse of the PEB system due to over-loading. Large-scale tests of tapered steel portal frames with non-compact sections were conducted. The primary test parameters included the bolt connection method and the loading condition (vertical and horizontal load). The test results on initial stiffness and load capacity were investigated. Furthermore, comparisons between the analytical and experimental data for load-displacement curves were initiated. In addition, we evaluated the applicability of a snug bolt for the PEB frame in the field.

  • The dropper supports the contact wire and is attached using various types of dropper clips on the catenary. Droppers are subject to mechanical stress from buckling during the passage of pantographs. In order to investigate failure causes for the high speed line dropper, theoretical analyses and experiments have been carried out. In this paper, mathematical formulas are derived for the pre-sag of the dropper static load. The measured values in the experiment were similar to the theoretical predictions. To analyze the cause on fracture of dropper wire, we have conducted analysis such as SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) of fractured specimens in the field and new specimens. Finally, we performed measurement for the variation of dynamic load on the dropper when a pantograph moved at 300km/h under the Korean high speed overhead line. If such mechanical load occur repeatedly with every passing pantograph, it is possible that the dropper wire will break due to fatigue. This results will be used for special management of high speed catenary system maintenance and life estimation of dropper.

  • Pre-Engineering Building (PEB) system is one of the most economical structural systems. Tapered members can resist a maximum stress at a single location, whereas stresses of the rest of the members are considerably low. This results in appreciable savings both in terms of materials and construction costs. However, it was appreciated that special consideration would be required for certain aspects of this structural form. In particular, because of their slenderness, webs would buckle laterally and torsionally under the combined action of excessive axial, bending and shear forces. In this study, a total of four large-scale rafters with simple ends were tested. The main parameters were the width-thickness ratio of the web, the stiffener, and the flange brace. The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the structural stability and to offer back-data on PEB design.

  • A helideck is one of the essential structures in offshore platforms for the transportation of goods and operating personnel between land and offshore sites. As such, it should be carefully designed and installed for the safety of the offshore platform. In this study, a structural design optimization method for a lightweight offshore helideck is developed based on a genetic algorithm and an attainable design set concept. A helideck consists of several types of structural members such as plates, girders, stiffeners, trusses, and support elements, and the dimensions of these members are typically pre-defined by manufacturers. Therefore, design sets are defined by collecting the standard section data for these members from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and integer section labels are assigned as design variables in the genetic algorithm. The objective is to minimize the total weight of the offshore helideck while satisfying the maximum allowable stress criterion under various loading conditions including self-weight, wind direction, landing position, and landing condition. In addition, the unity check process is also utilized for additional verification of structural safety against buckling failure of the helideck.
