The paper presents results of an investigation on the permeability characteristics and pore structure of concrete containing different levels of fly ash, silica fume, or blast furnace slag. The total cementitious content was 351kg/㎥, and the water/cementitious materials ratio was 0.55. The porosity and pore structure of representative pastes of the matrix were measured using mercury intrusion porosimetry, and the permeability characteristics of concrete were also determined by water and oxygen permeability, chloride ion penetration. The results show that significant reduction in permeability of concrete containing pozzolanic materials due to formation of a discontinuous macro-pore system which inhibits flow. And, the permeability of concrete and pore structure(capillary porosity or total porosity) shows linear relationship.

This paper presents results of an experimental study which investigates the effect of industrial pozzolan made from calcined silt of dam at $750^{\circ}C$ for 5 h, on mechanical properties and durability of ordinary mortar, compared to the silica fume. Mortar specimens prepared with 5, 10 and 15 % of calcined silt to substitute cement were evaluated for their compressive and flexural strength, sulfate, acid and penetration of chloride ions resistance. The results were compared with ordinary mortar (without addition) and mortar containing 10 % of silica fume. The results obtained showed that the calcined silt of dam has a high potential to be used as a pozzolanic material, it improves the strength and the durability of mortar and compete the silica fume.

In general, various factors such as grain size, chemical composition, amorphous amount, amorphous Si and Al content of fly ash affect the reaction with cement. In this study, we investigate the effect of fly ash particle characteristics on compressive strength. The standard sand was pulverized to a particle size similar to that of fly ash and the compressive strength was measured by blending with the cement as in fly. Using the measured compressive strength results, strength enhancement by cement hydration reaction and strength enhancement by particle filling effect were confirmed. Strength increment by pozzolanic reaction of fly ash was calculated by using the compressive strength results of mortar substituted with standard powder. As a result of comparison between compressive strengths and the particle characteristics of fly ash, the blaine showed a weak correlation with the compressive strength and the PI(Pozzolanic Index) showed good correlation with the 10% penetration diameter(D10) and the 50% Respectively. Therefore, it is expected that PI will be a good means to evaluate the fly ash characteristics together with the chemical characteristics of fly ash.
To improve the utilization rate of construction waste as mine backfilling materials, this paper investigated the feasibility of using recycled powder as mine paste backfilling cementitious material, and studied the pozzolanic activity of recycled construction waste powder. In this study, alkali-calcium-sulfur served as the activation principle and an orthogonal test plan was performed to analyze the impact of the early strength agent, quick lime, and gypsum on the pozzolanic activity of the recycled powder. Our results indicated that in descending order, early strength agent > quick lime > gypsum affected the strength of the backfilling paste with recycled powder as a cementitious material during early phases. The strength during late phases was affected by, in descending order, quick lime > gypsum > early strength agent. Using setting time and early compressive strength as an analysis index as well as an extreme difference analysis, it was found that the optimal ratio of recycled powder cementitious material for mine paste backfilling was recycled powder:quick lime:gypsum:early strength agent at 78%:10%:8%:4%. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscope were used to show that the hydration products of recycled powder cementitious material at the initial stages were mainly CH and ettringite. As hydration time increased, more and more recycled powder was activated. It mainly became calcium silicate hydrate, calcium aluminate hydrate, etc. In summary, recycled powder exhibited potential pozzolanic activities. When activated, it could replace cementitious materials to be used in mine backfill.

Recently, the use of crushed stones is increased due to the shortage of natural aggregates. In the previous papers of part 1 and 2, we got the conclusions that some of crushed stones have the characteristic of alkali-silica reaction(ASR). And these reactions are influenced by the amount and type of alkali in cement. The purpose of this paper is how to prepare for the prevention against alkali-silica reaction. As a solution of problems, we have conducted the experiments of two methods. One was the replacement of innocuous aggregates instead of reactive aggregates, the other was the addition of various pozzolanic materials. As a result, we found that the expansion by alkali-silica reaction in mortar bar could be effectively decredsed by upper methods.

In this paper, a simple practical method is introduced in which a simple weight measurement of concrete and finite element numerical analysis are used to determine the moisture transfer coefficient of concrete with a satisfactory accuracy. Six concrete mixtures with different water-to-cementitious material (w/cm) ratios and two pozzolanic materials including silica fume and zeolite were examined to validate the proposed method. The comparison between the distribution of the moisture content obtained from the model and the one from the experimental data during both the wetting and drying process properly validated the performance of the method. With the proposed method, it was also shown that the concrete moisture transfer coefficient considerably depends on the pore water saturation degree. The use of pozzolanic materials and also lowering w/cm ratio increased the moisture transfer coefficient during the initial sorption, and then, it significantly decreased with an increase in the water saturation degree.

Recycling demolished concrete as an alternative source of coarse aggregates for the production of new concrete can help solve the growing waste disposal crisis and the problem of depleted natural aggregates. The purpose of this study is to investigate chloride migration of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials by chloride migration coefficient. The specimens were made with recycled coarse aggregate as various replacement ratio(10, 30, 50%) and metakaolin, blast furnace slag, fly ash is replaced for recycled concrete with mixing ratio 20%. The major results are as follows. 1) Compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials increase as curing age and chloride migration decrease. 2) When the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate is 30%, the chloride migration coefficient of recycled concrete containing blast furnace slag, metakaolin shows the similar or lower value than plain concrete at all ages.

Utilization of upgraded fine fly ash in cement-based materials has been proved by many researchers as an effective method to improve compressive strength of cement based materials at early ages. The addition of fine fly ash has introduced dilution effect, enhanced pozzolanic reaction effect, nucleation effect and physical filling effect into cement-fly ash system. In this study, an integrated reaction model is adpoted to quantify the contributions from cement hydration and pozzolanic reaction to compressive strength. A modified model related to the physical filling effect is utilized to calculate the compressive strength increment considering the gradual dissolution of fly ash particles. Via combination of these two parts, a numerical model has been proposed to predict the compressive strength development of fine fly ash mortar considering fly ash fineness. The reliability of the model is validated through good agreement with the experimental results from previous articles.

Recently, coal ash is used as resources to make controlled low-strength material (CLSM) which a self-compacted, cementitious material used primarily as a backfill in lieu of compacted fill. Pozzolanic reaction is strongly related with self-cementation of coal ashes. However, this reaction depends on pozzolanic content in fill materials and is disappeared in 2-3 days after placement of coal ash fill. Therefore, state of coal ash fill is commonly very loose and not appropriate for foundations of structures without special treatments. In this study, a coal ash placement device was developed to place coal ashes effectively to improve density of coal ash fills. The device consists of a ribbon type mixer to obtain homogeneous materials mixture and a piston type pump for density control of fill materials. Based on several laboratory test results, more stable coal ash fill state can be obtained with controlling placement pressure.
