  • This study investigates the feasibility of detecting structural damage using the HHT method. A damage detection index, the ratio of bandwidth (RB) is proposed. This index is highly correlated or approximately equal to the change of equivalent damping ratio for an intact structure incurring damage from strong ground motions. Based on an analysis of shaking table test data from benchmark models subjected to adjusted Kobe and El Centro earthquakes, the damage detection index is evaluated using the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) and the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods, respectively. Results indicate that, when the response of the structure is in the elastic region, the RB value only slightly changes in both the HHT and the FFT spectra. Additionally, RB values estimated from the HHT spectra vs. the PGA values change incrementally when the structure response is nonlinear i.e., member yielding occurs, but not in the RB curve from the FFT spectra. Moreover, the RB value of the top floor changes more than those from the other floors. Furthermore, structural damage is detected only when using the acceleration response data from the top floor. Therefore, the ratio of bandwidth RB estimated from the smoothed HHT spectra is an effective and sensitive damage index for detecting structural damage. Results of this study also demonstrate that the HHT is a powerful method in analyzing the nonlinear responses of steel structures to strong ground motions.

  • The natural convection model of the consolidated system has been developed to make sure the removal of decay heat generated in the spent fuel for the loss of forced cooling accident. The numerical technique employed was based on the ADI scheme. The calculation of heat generation rate in the spent fuel was peformed by the ANS-79 decay heat model, and the nonuniform surface heat flux is assumed with a chopped sine curve for the conservative decay heat generation input. The sensitivity study was performed to examine the possibility of the pool bulk boiling by varying the various parameters, i.e. inter-fuel spacing ratio, heat generation power, and radius of the fuel rod. The application results of this model show that the natural circulation flow through compacted spent fuel bundles enables the pool temperature to control in a safe and effective manner, after the required cooling time. The corresponding acceptance criteria of the cooling time for rearranging the spent fuel rods were also found.

  • This study expressed the reservoir's storage-discharge relation as a non-linear reservoir model and theoretically quantified the reservoir storage effect. Among those non-linear functions like exponential function, logarithmic function and power function considered, the exponential function of the storage-discharge relation was found to be the most valid. The non-linear reservoir model proposed was applied to the Chungju Dam and the Soyang River Dam, whose storage effects during flood were estimated to be about 23 hours and 43 hours, respectively. This result indicates that the Choongju Dam, even though its size and total storage volume are similar to those of the Soyang River Dam, does not achieve enough storage effect as its basin size and the inflow amount are much larger.

  • Background: Early recognition and treatment of sepsis would improve patients' outcome. But it is difficult to distinguish between sepsis and non-infectious conditions in the acute phase of clinical deterioration. We studied serum level of procalcitonin (PCT) as a method to diagnose and to evaluate sepsis. Methods: Between 1 March 2009 and 30 September 2009, 178 patients had their serum PCT tested during their clinical deterioration in the medical intensive care unit. These laboratories were evaluated, on a retrospective basis. We classified their clinical status as non-infection, local infection, sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock. Then, we compared their clinical status with level of PCT. Results: The number of clinical status is as follows: 18 non-infection, 33 local infection, 39 sepsis, 26 severe sepsis, and 62 septic shock patients. PCT level of non-septic group (non-infection and local infection) and septic group (sepsis, severe sepsis, septic shock) was $0.36{\pm}0.57$ ng/mL and $18.09{\pm}36.53$ ng/mL (p<0.001), respectively. Area under the curve for diagnosis of sepsis using cut-off value of PCT >0.5 ng/mL was 0.841 (p<0.001). Level of PCT as clinical status was statistically different between severe sepsis and septic shock ($^*severe$ sepsis; $4.53{\pm}6.15$ ng/mL, $^*septic$ shock $34.26{\pm}47.10$ ng/mL, $^*p$ <0.001). Conclusion: Level of PCT at clinical deterioration showed diagnostic power for septic condition. The level of PCT was statistically different between severe sepsis and septic shock.

  • In this paper, Nash equilibriums of generation markets are investigated using a game theory application for simplified competitive electricity markets. We analyze the characteristics of equilibrium states in N-company spot markets modeled by uniform pricing auctions and propose a new method for obtaining Nash equilibriums of the auction. We assume that spot markets are operated as uniform pricing auctions and that each generation company submits its bids into the auction in the form of a seal-bid. Depending on the bids of generation companies, market demands are allocated to each company accordingly. The uniform pricing auction in this analysis can be formulated as a non-cooperative and static game in which generation companies correspond to players of the game. The coefficient of the bidding function of company-n is the strategy of player-n (company-n) and the payoff of player-n is defined as its profit from the uniform price auction. The solution of this game can be obtained using the concept of the non-cooperative equilibrium originating from the Nash idea. Based on the so called residual demand curve, we can derive the best response function of each generation company in the uniform pricing auction with N companies, analytically. Finally, we present an efficient means to obtain all the possible equilibrium set pairs and to examine their feasibilities as Nash equilibriums. A simple numerical example with three generation companies is demonstrated to illustrate the basic idea of the proposed methodology. From this, we can see the applicability of the proposed method to the real-world problem, even though further future analysis is required.

  • The purpose of this paper is to derive fuel mix of electricity generating system with the lowest cost considering energy security and climate change mitigations as the target of energy policy. Energy Security Price Index(ESPI), based on the measure of market concentration in fossil fuel market and political risk of exporting countries, is chosen to assess the level of energy security. The methodology of Energy Conservation Supply Curve(CSC) is applied to fuel mix to meet the carbon emission mitigation through increasing the alternatives participation and introduction of new technologies. These also represent an improvement on the level of energy security, having the complementarity between two objectives. The alternative measure for improving energy security is exploration and production(E&P) of fossil fuel for energy sufficiency. Fuel mix of electricity generating system to achieve certain objectives in 2020 can be derived with the lowest cost considering energy security and carbon emission mitigations.

  • Recently seismic fragility analysis method has been widely used for the seismic probabilistic risk assessment of infrastructures such as nuclear power plants, buildings and bridges because of its probabilistic characteristics. Furthermore, this technique has been applied to large-scale social systems consisted of each infrastructures by combing GIS. In this paper, the applicability of this technique to domestic infrastructural systems was studied. The transportation network was selected as one of these domestic infrastructural systems. Example studies were peformed about Changwon city. Nonlinear time history analysis, with a maximal likelihood approach were conducted to establish the fragility curves of each infrastrucures (bridges). GIS analysis was also applied to the analysis of whole infrastructural systems. The results show that it is very useful to predict seismic probabilistic risk assessment of this domestic transportation network. However, it also shows that further studies such as more suitable damage criterion to domestic structure and precise nonlinear analysis techniques should be developed to predict more precise results.

  • This paper describes the electrical characteristics of ZnO surge arresters associated with the variation of surrounding conditions. To investigate the deterioration behaviors of ZnO surge arresters due to lightning surges, 8/20[${\mu}s$], 2.5[kA] impulse currents were injected to the ZnO surge arrester under test. The leakage currents of ZnO surge arrester subject to power frequency AC voltage were measured in different surrounding temperature and wet conditions. As a result, it was found that the leakage current is increased and its asymmetry is pronounced as the number of injection of the impulse current and the ambient temperature increase. Also, in the wet test the outside leakage current flowing through the housing surface of the ZnO surge arrester is much larger than the intrinsic leakage current of ZnO surge arrester element. The results obtained in this work can be a lied as factors of improving the reliability and performance of monitoring system for surge arresters.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been spotlighted as one of promising field emission displays(FEDs). For the first time, to authors knowledge, we have developed the 9" color CNT-FEDs with the resolution of 240x576 lines. The 9" CNT-FEDs with diode-type and triode-type structures are presented. The well-dispersed CNT paste was squeezed onto the metal-patterned cathode glass. For the anode plate, the Y2O2S:Eu, ZnS:Ag,Cl low-voltage phosphors were printed for red, green, and blue colors, respectively. The vacuum-packaged panel maintained the vacuum level of 1x10-7 Torr. The uniform moving images vacuum-packaged panel maintained the vacuum level of 1x10-7 Torr. The uniform moving images were demonstrated at 2 V/um. High brightness of 800, 200, and 150cd/m2 was observed on the green, red, and blue phosphors at V/um, respectively. Field emission characteristics of a triode-type CNT-FED were simulated using a finite element method. the resultant field strength on the cathode was modulated by gate bias and emitted electrons were focused on the anode. A relatively uniform emission image was experimentally achieved at the 800V anode. A relatively uniform emission image was experimentally achieved at the 800V anode and the 50-180 V gate biases. Energy distribution of electrons emitted from CNTs was measured using an energy analyzer. The maximum peak of energy curve corresponded to the Fermi energy level of CNTs. The whole fabrication processed of CNT-FEDs were fully scalable and reproducible. Our CNT-FEDs has demonstrated the high potential of large-area and full-color applications with very low cost fabrication and low power consumption.
