Phasor Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm to Configure Micro-grids

  • The present study presents the Phasor Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (PDPSO) algorithm, an effective optimization technique, the multi-dimensional vectors of which consist of magnitudes and phase angles. PDPSO is employed in the configuration of micro-grids. Micro-grids are concepts of distribution system that directly unifies customers and distributed generations (DGs). Micro-grids could supply electric power to customers and conduct power transaction via a power market by operating economic dispatch of diverse cost functions through several DGs. If a large number of micro-grids exist in one distribution system, the algorithm needs to adjust the configuration of numerous micro-grids in order to supply electric power with minimum generation cost for all customers under the distribution system.

New N-way Hybrid Power Combiner to Improve the Graceful Degradation Performance

  • In this paper, a new N-way hybrid power combiner for improving the graceful degradation performance has been proposed. The proposed combiner has been configured with two dummy transmission lines per each section, where each dummy transmission line has a different characteristic impedance, of the standard combiner. Under this proposed configuration, a detailed theoretical analysis has been performed to show the general function of a power combiner. When any M amplifiers among N identical amplifiers are suffering the failure mode in a power combining circuit or system, the graceful degradation performance has been improved due to the separation of a transmission line and an internal resistor in every failed section from the proposed combiner by simultaneously operating two shorting devices. Simulation results for all the items which can be measured from all the items which can be measured from the proposed combiner with an eight-way configuration have been presented.

  • This paper proposes a new configuration of 36-pulse voltage source converter which consists of two 6-pulse bridges and a pulse-interleaving auxiliary circuit. The system topology of proposed converter was derived to increase the pulse number of converter output voltage without increasing the number of 6-pulse bridges. The gate pulse generation was analyzed using the theoretical approach of multi-pulse switching converter. The operational feasibility of proposed system was verified by computer simulations with PSCAD/TMTDC software and experimental works with 3kVA hardware prototype. The proposed converter can be widely used for the uninterruptible power supply, the power quality compensator, and the distributed power generation, such as solar and fuel fell power system.

FAULT-TREE-BASED RISK ASSESSMENT FOR DYNAMIC CONDITION CHANGES

  • In order to apply a static fault-tree (FT) method to a system or a plant whose configuration changes dynamically, condition gates and a post processing method are used to effectively accommodate these changes. An operator's performance change, which can be caused by these configuration changes, should also be considered to assess the risk to a plant in a more realistic manner. This study aims to develop an integrated framework to accommodate various configuration changes and their effect on an operator’s performance by using the FT model. We applied a condition-based human reliability assessment (CBHRA) method to consider various conditions endured by an operator. That is, we integrated the CBHRA method with the conventional post processing method for modeling the system configuration changes. The effect of the condition monitoring systems installed in a plant is also considered. In this study, we show an example application of the integrated framework to a probabilistic safety assessment for the shutdown phase of a nuclear power plant.

  • 평판 도파로에서 Cerenkov-idler configuration 형태의 광학적 매개증폭에 대해서 결합모드 이론을 적용하여 결합모드 방정식을 유도하고, 이 방정식의 근사해를 펌핑광의 고갈(depletion)이 없는 경우에 대해서 구한다. 이 근사해로부터 발생되는 idler의 체렌코프 복사각이 $0^{\circ}$도에 접근할 때 signal의 이득이 크게 향상될 수 있음을 보여주고 수치적 예를 보인다.

  • As a general radial configuration of power distribution system, the various researches have being studied to change a radial configuration to network one such as smart, intelligent and micro grid for loop operation. If a radial configuration changes to network, protective coordination comes to the biggest problem. When a typical protective algorithm is applied to loop distribution system protection, the interrupted section is expanded, therefore, reliability grows worse. This paper presents the new protective method being able to apply to loop distribution system with Distribution Automation System (DAS) which separate the minimal faulted section. Through contingency analysis of the sustained and momentary fault, we analyzed the influence for radial configuration and loop configuration using interrupted area and proved the effectiveness of proposed method.

PAV의 개발현황과 경제적 효율성 비교 (Development Status and Economic Efficiency of PAV)

  • PAV is considered to improve quality of life and standards of living, improvement of which was caused by automobile hundred years ago. Comparative economic efficiency of PAVs is measured to compare each PAV. Specification and sales price of the PAVs are open to the public. BlackFly, Transition and Aeromobil 3.0 have competitive power in flying range, purchasing cost, and operational cost. Lift & cruise configuration and vectored thrust configuration PAVs are designed by many companies nowadays, and BlackFly which can be considered to be lift & cruise configuration is one of the most efficient PAVs. High battery price does not help multi-copter shaped PAVs to have economic efficiency. Aerodynamic wing, eVTOL, and low sale price are needed for PAVs to ride a wave of public interest as a new personal mobility. Under the conditions, the PAV can fly at downtown and can be purchased by people at large. Popularization of PAV could follow in the 100 years old footsteps of automobile.

분산전원의 구성 및 출력 제어 방법에 따른 Droop 계수 설정 방법 (A Method to Determine the Droop Constant of DGs Considering the Configuration and Active Power Control Mode)

  • Microgrid usually consists of a cluster of distributed generators(DGs), energy storage systems and loads, and can operate in the grid-connected mode and the islanded mode. This paper presents detailed descriptions of two different options for controlling the active power of DGs in the microgrid. One is regulating the power injected by the unit to a desired amount(Unit output power control) and the other is to regulate the flow of active power in the feeder where the unit is installed to a constant(Feeder flow control). Frequency-droop characteristics are used to achieve good active power sharing when the microgrid operates in the islanded mode. The change in the frequency and the active power output of DGs are investigated according to the control mode and the configuration of DGs when the microgrid is disconnected from the main grid. From the analysis, this paper proposes a method to determine the droop constant of DGs operating in the feeder flow control mode. Simulation results using the PSCAD/EMTDC are presented to validate the approach, which shows good performance as opposed to the conventional one.

Electric Propulsion Naval Ships with Energy Storage Modules through AFE Converters

  • This paper proposes a novel electric propulsion system for naval ships, which consists of Active Front End (AFE) converters directly connected to battery Energy Storage Modules (ESMs). Employing the proposed AFE converters with ESMs in the power systems of naval ships can enhance the reliability and quality of the electric power. Furthermore, the fuel-efficiency of the generator can be improved by a higher loading factor of the generator and its prime movers. The proposed AFE configuration does not require an additional dedicated DC/AC converter for the ESMs. Instead of that, the AFE converter itself can control the DC link voltage and the discharging and/or charging of the ESMs. A control scheme to achieve these control objectives is also presented in this paper. The overall power system, including the generators and electrical loads of a naval ship, is implemented by a small scaled Power Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL) simulator. Through this experimental setup, the proposed system configuration and the power control strategies are verified. It is shown that the fuel-efficiency and transient dynamics can be improved in the normal and contingency operation modes.

A Performance of Single Phase Switched Reluctance Motor having both Radial and Axial air gap

  • Switched Reluctance Motor has doubly salient poles in stator and rotor, windings are wound in just stator and no magnet or windings on the rotor. This configuration is robust mechanically and thermally. The inverter of SRM is more robust than that of induction or brushless DC(BLDC) motor, but still its drive is comparatively expensive for home appliance. To drive the conventional three or four-phase SRM, 6 to 8 power switches are required when asymmetric bridge inverter is employed. Generally, more than 50% of the cost for the SRM drive is allocated to power devices and gate drives. This paper proposed single phase SRM that have both radial and axial air gaps. The stator and rotor were stacked with two types of stampings that have different diameters. This configuration is very effective to increase align inductance(Lmax). The high value of Lmax increases the motor efficiency and power density. The proposed single phase SRM(Claw SRM) can be driven by only two power switches. To show the validity of the proposed idea, the analysis using finite element method(FEM) and experimental works are carried out. The proposed SPSRM can be driven with high efficiency and can be made compactly and inexpensively because of high value of align inductance and less number of switches. For the comparison, we used same stator for three-phase and single phase, and slightly different stator and rotor for proposed single phase SRM(Claw SRM)
