  • Thermal/cold spray deposition were used for additive manufacture of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel layers. Mechanically alloyed F/M ODS steel powders (Fe(bal.)-10Cr-1Mo-0.25Ti-0.35Y2O3 in wt.%) were sprayed by a high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) and cold spray methods. HVOF, as a thermal method, was used for manufacturing a 1 mm-thick ODS steel layer with a ~95% density. The source to objective distance (SOD) and feeding rate were controlled to achieve sound manufacturing. Y2Ti2O7 nano-particles were preserved in the HVOF sprayed layer; however, unexpected Cr2O3 phases were frequently observed at the boundary area of the powders. A cold spray was used for manufacturing the Cr2O3-free layer and showed great feasibility. The density and yield of the cold spray were roughly 80% and 45%, respectively. The softening of ODS powders before the cold spray was conducted using a tube furnace of up to 1200℃. Microstructural characteristics of the cold sprayed layer were investigated by electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), the uniformity of deformation amount inside powders was observed.

  • A radio-frequency (RF) Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) torch system was used for boron-nitride nano-tube (BNNT) synthesis. Because of electrodeless plasma generation, no electrode pollution and effective heating transfer during nano-material synthesis can be realized. For stable plasma generation, argon and nitrogen gases were injected with 60 kW grid power in the difference pressure from 200 Torr to 630 Torr. Varying hydrogen gas flow rate from 0 to 20 slpm, the electrical and optical plasma properties were investigated. Through the spectroscopic analysis of atomic argon line, hydrogen line and nitrogen molecular band, we investigated the plasma electron excitation temperature, gas temperature and electron density. Based on the plasma characterization, we performed the synthesis of BNNT by inserting 0.5~1 um hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) powder into the plasma. We analysis the structure characterization of BNNT by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), also grasp the ingredient of BNNT by EELS (Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy) and Raman spectroscopy. We treated bundles of BNNT with the atmospheric pressure plasma, so that we grow the surface morphology in the water attachment of BNNT. We reduce the advancing contact angle to purity bundles of BNNT.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of driving atomizing nozzle position, the slope of sludge entering tube and supplying air flow rate on the performance of sludge air dryer. This paper deals with optimization of the geometry of the atomizing nozzle for sludge drying using computational fluid dynamics and drying performance test using pilot air dryer. The air drying system was composed of the atomizing nozzle which made high-speed fluid field. dewatered cake was crushed at the high-speed zone as the first step and formed intto dried powder of sphere shape by the collision between particles at the circling zone. The CFD analysis results show when the slope of entering sludge tube is smaller, suction air amount is increased. It is shown that the developed atomizing nozzle is very excellent in the drying performance through pilot test.

  • The microstructure of Ni-YSZ cermets was controlled with fine and coarse starting powders (NiO and YSZ) to obtain a optimum strong and conductive tubular anode support for SOFCs. Three types of cermets with different microstructures, i.e., coarse Ni-fine YSZ, fine Ni-coarse YSZ, and fine Ni-fine YSZ, were fabricated to investigate their electrical and mechanical properties. The cermets from fine NiO powder showed high electrical conductivity due to the enhanced percolation of Ni particles. The cermet by foe Ni and coarse YSZ showed excellent electrical conductivity (>1000 S/cm) despite its high porosity $(\sim40%)$ but it showed poor mechanical strength due to the lack of percolation by YSZ particles and due to large pores. Thus fine NiO and YSZ powders were used to make strong and conductive Ni-YSZ support tube by extrusion. The microstructure of the anode tube was modified by the amount of polymeric additives and carbon black, a pore former. Ni-YSZ tube (porosity $\sim34%$) with the finer microstructure showed better performance both in electrical conductivity (>1000 S/cm) and fracture strength $(\sim140\;MPa)$. Either flat or circular NiO-YSZ tubes with the length from 20 to 40cm were successfully fabricated with the optimized composition of materials and polymeric additives.

  • AlN powder was prepared by carbon reduction and subsequent nitridation method through the scale-up experiments of 0.7 ~ 1.5 kg per batch. AlN powder was synthesized using the mixture of $Al_2O_3$ powder and carbon black at $1,550{\sim}1,750^{\circ}C$ for 0.5 ~ 4 hours under nitrogen atmosphere (flow rate of nitrogen gas: $10{\sim}40{\ell}/min$) at $2.0{\times}10^{-1}Torr$. Experimental results showed that $1,700{\sim}1,750^{\circ}C$ for the reaction temperature, 3 hr for reaction time, and $40{\ell}/min$ for the flow rate of nitrogen gas were the optimal conditions. Also, in order to remove carbon in the synthesized AlN, the remained carbon was removed at $650{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ for 1 ~ 2 hr using horizontal tube furnace. The results showed that 1 : 3.2 mol ratio of $Al_2O_3$ to carbon black, reaction temperature of $750^{\circ}C$, reaction time of 2 hours, rotating speed of 1.5 rpm under atmosphere condition were the optimal conditions. Under these conditions, high-purity AlN powder over 99% could be prepared: carbon and oxygen contents of the AlN powder were 835 ppm and 0.77%, respectively.

  • To study on the superconducting properties with cooling conditions, silver-sheathed Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O wires fabricated by the powder-in-tube method. The wires cooled down in the furnace, air and liquid NS12T after sintering at 840$^{\circ}C$ Critical current density of sample cooled in the furnace is 5.1${\times}$10S03TA/cmS02T and sample cooled in the air is 40A/cmS02T at 77K, zero magnetic field. The latter is very low critical current density of Bi system. 2223 high-Tc superconducting phase of sample cooled in the air was distroyed. Properties of sample cooled down in the liquid nitrogen is the same as cooled in the furnace.

  • The characteristics of Bi2212 round wire was systematically studied depending on different heat treatment conditions. Initial wire was drawn after routine PIT (Powder In Tube) process. The wire was divided into 3 pieces with 10 cm in length and 2.5 mm in diameter. 3 wires were pre-heat treated separately by different heat treatment schedules, heated in air and nitrogen atmosphere and centrifugally melted. Pre-heated wires were annealed at $845^{\circ}C$ for 40 hours in oxygen atmosphere. SEM results indicate that all pre-heated wires showed highly oriented microstructure. However the wire by centrifugally melted process showed higher density and better electric properties as compared with 2 other wires pre-heated in air and nitrogen atmosphere. The critical current of a centrifugally melted wire was about 18 A in 77 K.

  • In this paper, AC losses of long wire Bi-2223 tapes with different twist pitch of superconducting core were fabricated, measured and analyzed. These samples produced by a powder-in-tube method are multi-filamentary tape with Ag matrix. Also, it's produced by non-twist. The critical current measurement was carried out under the environment in Liquid nitrogen and in zero field by 4-prob method. And the Magnetic measurement was carried out under the environment of applied time-varying transport current by transport method. From experiment, the susceptibility measurements were conducted while cooling in a magnetic field. Flux loss measurements were conducted as a function of ramping rate, frequency and field direction. The AC flux loss increases as the twist-pitch of the tapes decreased, in agreement with the Norris Equation. Neutron-diffraction measurements have been carried out investigate the crystal structure, magnetic structures, and magnetic phase transitions in Bi-2223([Bi, Pb]:Sr:Ca:Cu:O).
