자동차용 마찰재에 사용되는 아라미드 섬유와 티탄산칼륨 섬유의 역할 (The Roles of Aramid Pulp and Potassium Titanate Whisker in the Automotive Friction Materials)

  • Friction and wear characteristics of novolac resin-based friction materials reinforced with aramid pulp and potassium titanate were investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Friction properties such as friction stability, surface morphology, and wear rate varied according to the relative amount of aramid pulp and potassium titanate. The friction materials reinforced with both aramid pulp and potassium titanate showed superior friction stability and wear resistance due to the formation of durable transfer layer.

  • Friction and wear characteristics of phenolic resin-based friction materials reinforced with aramid pulp and potassium titanate were investigated using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Friction characteristics such as friction stability, thermal stability, and wear rate varied according to the type of phenolic resins and the relative amount of aramid pulp and potassium titanate. The modified novolac resin-based friction materials showed better heat resistance and friction stability than those with the unmodified(straight) novolac resin. Compared with friction materials filled with potassium titanate or aramid pulp only, the friction materials reinforced with both aramid pulp and potassium titanate showed good friction stability and wear resistance. Increment of aramid pulp from 10 to 20 vol.% however, showed little difference in friction stability.

  • 금속티타늄 분말과 $H_2O_2$와의 반응물에 KOH용액을 첨가하는 습식법에 의해 티탄산칼륨 섬유를 합성하고, 합성된 생성물을 XRD, SEM, FT-IR 등에 의해 검토하였다. 습식 합성법의 경우, $KOH/TiO_2$ 몰비, 합성시간, aging 시간등이 주로 최종 생성물에 영향을 주었다. $KOH/TiO_2 = 1/1$, 합성시간 24시간, aging 시간 24시간 및 하소 온도 $900^{\circ}C$에서의 생성물은 주로 potassium tetratitanate이었으며, 10 ~ 20mm의 가늘고 긴 장섬유이었다. 합성시간이 길어질수록, 그리고 KOH량이 적어질수록, potassium tetratitanate는 potassium hexatitanate로 바뀌면서 섬유의 길이는 짧아졌다.

스플린터 및 판상형 티탄산칼륨염 합성 및 브레이크 보강재로서의 평가 (Synthesis of splinter-type and plate-type potassium titanate as reinforcements in brake pad for automobile)

  • 스플린터(splinter) 및 판상(plate shape) 형상을 가지는 티탄산칼륨염(K2O·nTiO2, PT)을 합성하고 브레이크 마찰재의 보강재로 이용하여 마찰 특성을 평가하였다. 스플린터형 티탄산칼륨염을 합성하기 위하여 먼저 판상 형상을 가지는 사티탄산칼륨염(K2O·4TiO2, PT4)을 합성하고 칼륨 이온(K+)을 일부 산침출(acid leaching)하여 육티탄산칼륨염(K2O·6TiO2, PT6)으로 변환시킨 후, 800℃에서 열처리하여 스플린터 형상의 입자를 얻었다. 판상형 티탄산칼륨염을 합성하기 위해서 염화칼륨을 융제로 사용하고 마그네슘(Mg)을 일부 첨가하여 판상의 형상을 가지는 마그네슘티탄산칼륨염(K0.8Mg0.4Ti1.6O4, PMT)을 합성하였다. 얻어진 육티탄산칼륨염 및 마그네슘티탄산칼륨염 입자를 보강재로 이용하여 브레이크 패드 마찰재를 제작하고 1/ 5-스케일 다이나모미터(scale dynamometer)를 이용하여 마찰 마모 특성을 평가하였다. 평가 결과, 두 종류의 보강재가 유사한 마찰계수 및 Fade & recovery 특성을 보였으며 판상형 마그네슘티탄산칼륨염의 경우, 스플린터형 육티탄산칼륨염보다 우수한 내마모성을 보이는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • The friction and wear characteristics of brake friction materials reinforced with aramid fiber, carbon fiber, glass fiber, and potassium titanate whiskers were investigated using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. In particular, the morphology of rubbing surfaces was carefully investigated to correlate the friction performance and properties of transfer films. The aramid fiber reinforced specimen showed severe oscillation of friction coefficient at low speed and low applied pressure. The carbon fiber reinforced specimen showing better friction stability exhibited uniform and stable transfer film than any other specimens. The glass fiber reinforced specimen showed unstable friction changes at high speed and high-applied pressure and the non-uniform transfer film was observed in both friction material and rotor surface. The potassium titanate whiskers reinforced specimen showed stable coherent transfer film. The wear test exhibited the potassium titanate whiskers reinforced specimen was lowest in wear amount and glass fiber reinforced specimen showed the severe wear.

친환경 규제 원료를 제거한 마찰재의 마찰 특성에 관한 연구 (Tribological properties of the brake friction materials without environmentally regulated ingredients)

  • Friction characteristics of the brake friction materials without environmentally regulated ingredients were examined to find their role in the brake performance. Five friction materials were produced based on a nearcommercial formulation by changing the relative amount of potentially hazardous ingredients to health and environment, such as $Sb_2S_3$, potassium titanate, and brass fiber. Tribological properties of the friction materials were obtained using a scale dynamometer and Krauss type tribometer. Results showed that the excluded three ingredients played important synergetic effects on tribological properties in terms of fade resistance, wear resistance and friction effectiveness. In particular, brass fibers played important roles in the friction stability by providing excellent thermal diffusivity at the friction interface. Potassium titanate whiskers showed excellent fade resistance and wear resistance compared to the substituted barite. Antimony trisulfide, on the other hand, showed little effect on the high temperature fade resistance and wear resistance, while it increased friction effectiveness at moderate temperatures. The friction materials without the three ingredients showed severe fade, indicating antisynergy effects.

Frictional Instabilities of Polymer Composite Containing Barite or Potassium Titanate for Brake Linings

  • Tribological properties of novolac resin composites containing particulate barite (BaSO$_4$) or potassium titanate (K$_2$Oㆍ6(TiO$_2$))whiskers (two typical space fillers for commercial automotive brake linings) were investigated. The emphasis of the current investigation was given to the effect of the two fillers on the propensity of the stick-slip phenomena and formation of stable rubbing surface. A block-on-disk type tribometer was used for friction assessment. Results showed that the BaSO$_4$-filled composite produced large friction force oscillations at slow sliding speeds and created severe damage on the gray iron counter surface. On the other hand, the composite with $K_2$Oㆍ6(TiO$_2$) whiskers formed a stable rubbing surface and showed smooth sliding behavior without large friction force fluctuation. The microscopic observation of the rubbing surface revealed that the $K_2$Oㆍ6(TiO$_2$)whiskers played a key role in the formation of stable rubbing surface and smooth sliding behavior by effectively reinforcing the resin.

  • Fibrious potassium hexatitanate whisker was produced from the calcination process using a mixture of the natural rutile ore and industrial $K_2CO_3$. Fibrous Potassium titanate was prepared by the following procedures the starting material consisting of $K_2O{\cdot}4.4TiO_2$ was calcined at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs. The calcined products obtained under the above condition consisted mainly of potassium hexatitanate with a small admixture of potassium dititanate and potassium tetratitanate. Therefore the single phase of potassium hexatitanate was obtained by heat treatment of $850^{\circ}C$, 3 hrs.

Synthesis of Lithium Titanate Whisker Using Ion-Exchange of Acid Treatment

  • Lithium titanate whiske($Li_{x}Ti_{4}O_9$) was prepared by an ion-exchange reaction. To this end, the initial material, potassium tetratitanate ($K_{2}Ti_{4}O_9{\cdot}nH_{2}O$) was prepared by calcination of a mixture of $K_{2}CO_3\;and\;TiO_2$ with a molar ratio of 2.8 at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, followed by boiling water treatment of the calcined products for 10 h. Fibrous potassium tetratitanate could be transformed into layered hydrous titanium dioxide ($H_{2}Ti_{4}O_9{\cdot}nH_{2}O$) through an exchange of $K^{+}\;with\;H^{+}$ using 0.075 M HCl. Also, lithium titanate whisker was finally prepared as $Li^{+}\;and\;H^{+}$ ions were exchanged by adding 20 mL of a mixture solution of LiOH and $LiNO_3$ to 1g whisker and stirring for $5\~15$ days. The average length and diameter of the $Li_{x}Ti_{4}O_9$ whiskers were $10\~20{\mu}m\;and\;1\~3{\mu}m$, respectively.
