  • This study was performed to assess the physical activity, food habit and nutrient intakes by gender and age groups in 193 adults aged 20-59 years (84 men and 109 women) in Pusan. Data for physical activity and dietary survey was assessed by a questionnaire and 24hr recall method. The mean BMIs of men and women were 24.0 and 22.2 respectively and BMI of women in the 20-29 years group (20.9) was significantly lower than that of women in the 30-49 and 50-59 years group (22.7, 23.2) (p < 0.01). 56.0% for men and 44.0% for women exercised regularly. The mean exercise duration per once of men (69.7 minutes) was significantly higher than that of women (52.4minutes) (p < 0.01). The mean exercise duration per day was 36.0 minutes for men and 29.9 minutes for women. 67.9% for men and 78.0% for women often skipped meals and 68.4% for men and 69.4% for women skipped breakfast in the main. The mean energy intake of men was 2067.2 kcal and that of women was 1783.1 kcal comprised of 87.2% and 92.1% of the Estimated Energy Requirements (EER). The mineral intakes of men and women were over Recommended Intake (RI) and Adequate Intake (AI) except calcium and potassium. The mean calcium intake was 88.3% for men and 84.0% for women of RI. The mean potassium intake was 63.3% for men and 59.2% for women of AI. The mean vitamin intakes of men and women were over RI and AI except vitamin C and folic acid. The mean vitamin C intake was 92.5% for men and 85.6% for women of RI. The mean folic acid intake was 76.6% for men and 70.0% for women of RI. The mean energy, protein, sodium and zinc intakes of men were significantly higher than those of women (p < 0.01, p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.05). The mean vitamin $B_6$, vitamin C and folic acid intakes of men in the 20-29 years group were significantly lower than those of men in the 30-49 and 50-59 years group (p < 0.01, p < 0.05, p < 0.05). For energy, proportions of subjects with intake levels less than 90% EER were 64.3% for men and 56.0% for women. For calcium, proportions of subjects with intake levels less than Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) were 52.4% for men and 59.6% for women. • A regulating mechanism of the ATP-sensitive potassium channels $(K_{ATP}\;channels)$ is yet to fully explained. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of intracellular application of monocarboxylates (acetate, formate, lactate, and pyruvate) on $K_{ATP}$ channels in isolated rabbit ventricular myocytes. Single channel currents of $K_{ATP}$ channels were recorded using the excised inside-out or permeabilized attached (open-cell) patch-clamp technique at room temperature. Intracellular application of acetate, formate and pyruvate led to an inhibition of channel activity, whereas intracellular application of lactate increased channel activity. These effects were reversible upon washout. Analysis of single channel kinetics showed that monocarboxylates did not affect open-time constant and close-time constant. These results suggest that monocarboxylates participate in modulating $K_{ATP}$ channels activity in cardiac cells and that modulation of $K_{ATP}$ channels activity may resolve the discrepancy between the low $K_i$ in excised membrane patches and high levels of intracellular ATP concentration during myocardial ischemia or hypoxia.

  • Potassium cyanate (KOCN) that is known as an inducer of the protein carbamylation is an inorganic compound and is the conjugate based of cyanic acid (HOCN). Based on these studies, we confirmed that KOCN induces the apoptosis of the human colorectal cancer cell line, HCT 116 cells, by various mitochondrial pathways. To investigate other mechanisms of KOCN-mediated apoptosis, in the present study, we examined KOCN-induced cytokines production in HCT 116 cells and identified the intracellular signaling pathway in these processes. We first demonstrated that KOCN considerably increased the cell apoptosis via intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ signaling, mitochondrial dysfunction and ROS production. And then we examined TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$ levels mediated by KOCN in HCT 116 cells. Although IL-$1{\beta}$ was not involved in KOCN-mediated HCT 116 cell apoptosis, the release of TNF-${\alpha}$ was mediated by KOCN in HCT 116 cells via NF-${\kappa}B$ activation. Apoptosis was also enhanced by incubation with supernatants from HCT 116 cells after KOCN treatment and this effect was partially reduced by BAY 11-7085 pre-treated supernatant. Taken together, our results indicate that KOCN-induced apoptosis in HCT 116 cells is dependent on the releases of TNF-${\alpha}$ and the increased factors and that the mechanism involves the activation of NF-${\kappa}B$.

  • Ingestion of forage containing a large quantity of soluble oxalate can result in calcium deficiency and even death of livestock. Fertilization is one of the most practical and effective ways to improve yield and nutritional quality of forage. An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of nitrogen (N) fertilization (150, 300 and 600 kg/ha) across varying levels (150, 300 and 600 kg/ha) of potassium (K) on oxalate accumulation in napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum). Application of N at 300 kg/ha produced higher dry matter yield than at 150 or 600 kg/ha, while K fertilization had no effect on yield. In general, N fertilization did not affect the soluble and total oxalate contents, but slightly affected the insoluble oxalate content. Soluble oxalate content showed an increasing trend and insoluble oxalate content showed a decreasing trend with increasing K level, but total oxalate content remained relatively constant. There were significant interactions between N and K fertilization for the content of soluble and insoluble oxalate fractions. The greatest increase in soluble oxalate content with N level at 300 kg/ha was found at the high level (600 kg/ha) of K application. The greatest increase in insoluble oxalate content with N level at 600 kg/ha was found at the low level (150 kg/ha) of K application. These results indicated the possibility of controlling the content of soluble and insoluble oxalate fractions in forage by fertilization.

  • Bacteriocin ST311LD is approximately 2.3 kDa in size. Low levels of bacteriocin activity were recorded in BHI and M17 broth (800 AU/ml) and in $10\%$ (w/v) soy milk (3,200 AU/ml). No bacteriocin pro-duction was recorded in $10\%$ (w/v) molasses, despite good growth. Optimal levels (12,800 AU/ml) were detected in MRS broth which had been supplemented with tryptone (20.0 g/l), saccharose (5.0 or 10.0 g/l) or vitamin C (1 ppm). Increased potassium levels did not result in higher levels of activity, and glycerol (1.0 g/l) inhibited the production of bacteriocin ST311LD.

  • Chemical components of bovine aqueous humor were analyzed. Significant levels of protein, urea nitrogen, creatinine, cholesterol, calcium and electrolytes including sodium, potassium and chloride were detected. The composition of bovine aqueous humor is similar to that of cerebrospinal fluids, rather than that of plasma. It was also found that there is no significant difference in most components between aqueous humor of Korean native cattle and that of Holstein-Friesian cattle.

  • Effects of phosphorus, potassium and calcium applications on root activity and agronomic characters of paddy rice were studied in submerged paddy soil on which starch was applied to accelerate soil reduction and production of toxic substance during 1971~1973. Root activity at heading date was decreased in reduction accelerated soil by starch application. Effect of calcium application on root activity was differed along soil conditions, phosphorus or potassium levels. Single effects of phosphorus or potassium application were not significant on every observed characters. Calcium application when phosphorus or potassium was not used as basal but used as top dressing increased yield and yield components, especially filled grain ratio. Effect of calcium application along soil conditions was differed on agronomic characters, but calcium application with phosphorus or potassium was more effective to increase yield components and grain yield. Sufficient application of phosphorus, potassium and calcium could improve the nutritional situation of rice plant for panicle development and grain maturity in reduction accelerated paddy soil in which poor growing of rice plant after panicle formation is anticipated by the production of toxic substance from soil.

  • We have synthesized K-CFICs by the modified two-bulb method. These synthesized compound were analysed with X-ray diffractometer and UV/VIS spectrophotometer. According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the intercalation of potassium between the carbon layers of carbon fiber was better then other intercalants. From obtained data for this deintercalation process, we can see that a number of potassiums were presented as a residue between the carbon layers and this residue compounds had a stability for a long term. Therefore, it is appear that these compounds have a capability as new useful material. From UV/VIS spectrometry data, we can suppose that spectrum of K-CFICs synthesized at $250^{\circ}C$ had only a $R_{min}$, and spectra of any other compounds were not appeared charecteristic peaks because potassium ions were little affect the energy levels of original carbon fiber.

  • This study was conducted to establish standard fertilization rates for the cultivation of Korean valerian(Valeriana fauriei var. dasycarpa Hara) which is useful for medicinal and aromatic resources. Nitrogen, phosphate and potassium were treated with four application levels, 0, 6, 9, 12kg per 10a, and the growth characteristics, root yield and essential oil compositions of valerian were measured. The growth and root yield of valerian were the highest in the rate of 9kg per 10a for nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, respectively. Nitrogen had the most powerful effective followed by potassium and phosphate. The contents and compositions of essential oil also varied with the amount of fertilization. The contents of the essential oil was the highest in the application level of 9kg per 10a for nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, respectively. The essential oil compositions were affected by the fertilization rate.

  • To determine the effect of sodium plus potassium to chloride ratio and lysine level on blood pH, blood acid-base parameters, lysine-arginine antagonism and growth performance, four hundred and thirty two chicks of 3 days age were used in a completely randomized $3{\times}3$ factorial experiment. Variables contained three levels of lysine (0.8, 1.2 and 1.6%) and dietary electrolyte (100, 200 and 300 mEq/kg). Birds fed 200 mEq/kg and electrolyte had the best growth rate and feed efficiency, followed by those fed 300 mEq/kg and 100 mEq/kg electrolyte. It is proposed that high levels of dietary electrolyte may improve the growth of chicks fed diets containing excess lysine by increasing lysine catabolism. High or low levels of lysine and dietary electrolyte resulted in higher mortality than those of optimum level (1.2%) of lysine and 200 mEq/kg of electrolyte balance. When the electrolyte level was increased, the pH, $pCO_2$, base excess, $HCO_3{^-}$ and total $CO_2$ of blood plasma were increased. The utilization of nutrients was changed when the electrolyte and lysine were manipulated. Plasma chloride tended to be greater in chicks receiving high chloride diet and was the highest in chicks fed the high lysine diet. Plasma sodium and potassium were unaffected by dietary lysine. Diet containing high lysine decreased the level of arginine and excess dietary electrolyte increased arginine level in plasma. It may be concluded that cation supplementation tended to alleviate the lysine-arginine antagonism but chloride exacerbated. Tibia bone length and ash contents were significantly affected by electrolyte balance and lysine level.
