An association of urinary sodium-potassium ratio with insulin resistance among Korean adults

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of sodium-potassium ratio on insulin resistance and sensitivity in Korean adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Subjects were 3,722 adults (1,632 men and 2,090 women) aged 40-69 years participating in the Korean genome and epidemiology study_Ansan and Ansung study. Insulin resistance was assessed using homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HoMA-IR) and fasting insulin, and insulin sensitivity was assessed by using the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI). The 24-h urinary sodium and potassium excretion were estimated from spot urinary samples using the Tanaka formula. The generalized linear model was applied to determine the association between urinary sodium-potassium ratio and insulin resistance. RESULTS: HoMA-IR (P-value = 0.029, P-trend = 0.008) and fasting insulin (P-value = 0.017, P-trend = 0.005) levels were positively associated with 24-h estimated urinary sodium-potassium ratio in the multivariable model. QUICKI was inversely associated with 24-h estimated urinary sodium-potassium ratio in all models (P-value = 0.0002, P-trend < 0.0001 in the multivariate model). CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that high sodium-potassium ratio is related to high insulin resistance and low insulin sensitivity. Decreasing sodium intake and increasing potassium intake are important for maintaining insulin sensitivity. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings in longitudinal studies.

학령전 아동의 Sodium 과 Potassium 의 식이량 및 대사에 관한 연구 (A Study on Sodium and Potassium Intakes and their Metabolisms of Preschool Children in Seoul Area)

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate the sodium and potassium intakes and their metabolisms of preschool children, and to evaluate the relationship between the blood pressure and the related variables. The subjects consisted of ninety-five preschool children aged two to six years (male 57, female 38). Twenty-four hour urines of subjects were collected for the measurements of their volume, sodium, potassium, creatinine and urea nitrogen. At the same time, the questionnaire was designed to assess the sodium and potassium intakes. The' results obtained were as follows; 1) The urinary excretion of sodium in 24 hours was 54.6$\pm$22.4mEq(orI255.8mg)and dietary sodium intake was 2147.0$\pm$518.4mg. The dietary sodium intake significantly increased with increasing age(p=O.0151). However, daily sodium intake per unit body surface area did not show significant difference by age. 2)The urinary excretion of potassium in 24 hours was 14.2$\pm$7.6 mEq (or 555.2mg) and the potassium intake was 1133.8mg. 3) The urinary excretions of creatinine and urea nitrogen were 240.2$\pm$126.2mg and 2946.7$\pm$1693.9mg, respectively. 4) The principal food SOUTce of sodium intake was the seasoning group, which con\ulcornertributed 49.9% to total sodium intake. 5) The main food source of potassium intake was milk and milk products; from which 28.6% of total potassium intake was obtained. 6) The blood pressure showed highly positive correlations with height, weight and body surface area (p$\leq$O.OOl) . In addition, the blood pressure was found to be correlat\ulcornered with urinary sodium excetion and dietary sodium intake (p$\leq$O.Ol).

한국인의 성별, 연령별, 지역별 나트륨과 칼륨 섭취 현황 및 기여음식 : 2010-2012년 국민건강영양조사 분석 (A Comparison of Sources of Sodium and Potassium Intake by Gender, Age and Regions in Koreans: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010-2012)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the main sources of dietary sodium and potassium intake in Koreans by gender, age and regions. Methods: We used the data from 2010-2012 KNHANES. A total of 20,387 subjects aged 8 years and older were included. Intakes were compared by gender, age (8-18, 19-49 and >50 years) and geographical regions in Korea. Dishes were classified into 28 dish groups based on cooking methods. Statistical analysis was performed by using the SAS 9.3 and SUDAAN 11.0.1 software. Results: The mean sodium intake of Koreans was $4866.5{\pm}35.9mg/day$, which was 2.4 times higher than the adequate intake (AI) of sodium for Koreans. We found that daily sodium intakes were significantly different by age, gender and regions. Men and aged over 50 years had significantly higher sodium intake than women and other age groups. The mean potassium intake in Koreans was $3002.2{\pm}19.4mg/day$ and daily potassium intakes were significantly different by age, gender and regions. Women and age 50 years and over had significantly higher potassium intakes than men and other age groups. The average Na/K ratio was $2.89{\pm}0.01$ and was highest in men and in the age group of 19-49 years. The major sources of dietary sodium were soup and stew, followed by Kimchi, noodles and dumpling, pickled vegetables and seasonings, which represented 63.1 % of total sodium intakes. Soup and stew or Kimchi were the primary sources of dietary sodium intake. The major sources of dietary potassium were cooked rice, followed by soup and stew, Kimchi, fruits and beverages. Conclusions: Sodium and potassium intakes and the major sources of those were significantly different by gender, age groups and regions. Therefore, different approaches based on gender, age and regions are needed to decrease sodium intake and increase potassium intake.

Sodium and Potassium Balance and Their Relation to Nutrient Intakes in Young Adult Men and Women

  • This study was conducted to investigate sodium and potassium balances, as well as correlations among the relating factors in adult males and females. We collected blood, urine and feces samples as well as a dietary intake survey from 50 subjects. Then, we analyzed the sodium and potassium contents in blood, urine and feces, and evaluated their state of balance. The average ages of the study targets were 24.7 years old for males and 22.8 years old for females. The daily energy intake by the males was 1733.4 kcal and by the females was 1570.3 kcal. Sodium intakes were 138.3 mEq and 127.5 mEq for males and females, respectively. Potassium intakes were 43.1 mEq and 49.3 mEq, respectively. The daily excretions of sodium through urine were 136.6 mEq by males and 97.0 mEq by females and the excretions through feces were 2.2 mEq and 2.0 mEq, respectively. The daily excretions of potassium through urine were 20.2 mEq and 16.5 mEq by males and females respectively, and the excretions through feces were 7.7 mEq and 7.5 mEq male to female. The retention rates of sodium were 11.7% and 14.1% male to female, respectively, and the apparent absorption rates were 98.5% and 97.8%. Additionally, the retention rates of potassium were 32.9% and 39.8% and the apparent absorptions were 81.9% and 81.3%, both male and female. It was noted that, overall, the sodium intake of adult males and females is still higher than the recommended daily sodium intake, while the potassium intakes and excretions were found to be lower. Based on the results of this study, nutritional guidance and education is recommended to encourage decreased sodium intake and increased potassium intake, according to recommended standards.

  • To elucidate the mineral cycles of potassium in a dynamic grassland ecosystem in a steady state condition, this investigation was cunducted along the northwest side on Mt. Kwanak. The exper-imental results may he summarized on communities of Z. japonica and M. sinensis as follows. As compared with some pronerties of the surface soils among two semi-natural grasslands, the levels of exchangeahle potassium were high in M. sinensis and low in Z. japonica. Contents of potassium for the litters of Z. japonica and M. sinensis were 1.69% and 2.51%, re-spectively. The annual production of potassium was 1.32 g /m$m^2$ in the Z. japonica grassland and 3. 08 g /m$m^2$in the M. sinensis grassland. For a case of steady production and release, the ratio of annual min- eral production to the amount accumulated on top of the mineral soil in a steady state provides estimates of the release constant k. The models of the release, accumulation and annual cycle of potassium in a grassland ecosystem are determined by the equation (1) to (3), respectively (Table 3). Since it requires a period of about each 0.693 /r, 3 /r and 5 /r years for the release and accumu-lation of 50, 95 and 99% of its steady-state level, the estimates for potassium in a dynamic grass-land ecosystem of Mt. Kwanak were 1.5, 6.6 and 11.0 years in the Z. japonica grassland, and were 2.7, 11.9 and 19.8 years in the M. sinensis grassland. The amounts of annual cycles for potassium in a grassland ecosystem under the steady-state conditions were 1.32 g /m$^2$ in the Z. japonica grassland and 3.08 g /$m^2$ in the M. sinensis grassland. Potassium formate, Glycine, Oxalic acid가 황화물계 3가 크롬도금층의 조성과 전류효율에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Potassium Formate, Glycine and Oxalic Acid in Sulfate Bath on Trivalent Chromium Deposition Composition and Current Efficiency)

  • Effect of potassium formate, glycine and oxalic acid in a sulfate solution on the deposit composition and current efficiency of trivalent chromium plating was studied. The trivalent chromium layers prepared by solutions with potassium formate, glycine and oxalic acid contain a few carbon inside. The solutions containing potassium formate, glycine and oxalic acid are relatively stable with pH change. The solution with the potassium formate shows 6-30% current efficiency with current density, whereas, the solutions with oxalic acid and glycine show about 5% current efficiency, respectively. The improved current efficiency is related to enough supply of chromium ions to the electrode due to the increase of pH at the front of electrode.

  • Bacillus subtilis의 생육 억제에 미치는 보존료의 병용효과 및 식염과의 상승효과를 조사하기 위하여 tryptone glucose-yeast extract 액체배지에 potassium sorbate와 sodiun bnzoate를 각각 최고허용농도의 1/2인 0.1%, 0.03%로 처리하고 이에 미생물의 내염성 기준도인 2% 식염을 첨가하여 진탕배양(4시간) 또는 정치배양 (4일)하면서 생육 상태를 조사한 결과, 두 보존료의 상승효과가 정치 및 진탕배양에서 모두 나타나지 않았으나 potassium sorbate와 식염의 병용처리구에서는 상승효과가 현저하게 나타났다.

Potassium Chloride 농도 변화에 따른 ZnO 나노구조체의 미세구조와 광학적 성질

  • ZnO의 나노 구조는 화학적으로 안정하고 큰 결합에너지를 가지는 성질 때문에 청색 영역에서 작동하는 광전소자의 제작에 대단히 유용하다. 전기 화학 증착법으로 성장된 ZnO의 나노구조는 가격이 저렴하고 낮은 온도에서 성장이 가능하며 대면적화를 할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 전기 화학 증착법으로 ZnO을 성장할 때 ITO 기판을 음극으로 백금 전극을 양극으로 사용하였고 기준 전극은 Ag/AgCl을 사용하였다. Potassium chloride의 몰 농도를 변화하면서 ZnO 나노구조를 성장하였다. 성장한 ZnO 나노구조를 $400^{\circ}C$에서 2분 정도 열처리를 하였다. 성장된 ZnO을 X-선 회절 결과는 (0002) 피크가 $34.35^{\circ}$에서 나타났다. 주사 전자 현미경상은 Potassium chloride의 몰 농도가 낮을 때 성장한 ZnO 나노구조체가 고르게 성장되는 것을 알 수 있었다. Potassium chloride의 농도가 변화하면 ZnO 나노구조체의 형태가 변화하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 300 K에서 광루미네선스 스펙트럼은 형성된 나노구조가 엑시톤과 관련된 피크가 potassium chloride 농도에 따라 변화하게 되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이 실험결과는 ZnO 나노구조의미세구조와 광학적 성질이 potassium chloride의 농도에 영향을 많이 받는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Sodium, Potassium and Chloride Utilizations Affected by White Corn Bread, Yellow Corn Bread, and Whole Wheat Bread Diets in Humans

  • Sodium restricted diets are known to lower blood pressure in salt sensitive, hypertensive patients. Thare is increasing evidence that potassium plays an important role as a protective factor in the regulation of blood pressure. The objective of the current study was to measure parameters of sodium, potassium, and chloride utilization as affected by feeding of substantial quantities of bread made from whole ground white torn meal, whole ground yellow corn meal, and whole ground wheat flour. The breads provided 40 percent of a caloric content of the constant, measured laboratory diet. The 28-day study was divided into an introductory period of 7-days and three experimental periods of 7-days each. Order of assignment to specific treatments for 12 healthy subjects were according to a complete randomized block design. Yellow corn bread diets resulted in the highest potassium retention (243 mg/day) and the lowest urinary sodium and potassium ratio (1.53 $\pm$ 0.26) numerically in comparison to the other test breads. The excretions of sodium and chloride were higher during controlled feeding periods than during the self-selected diet period(p < 0.05). This indicates a response to the higher intake of these electrolytes from the experimental diets than from self-selected diets. There was no significant difference in the effect of white corn bread, yellow corn bread, or whole wheat bread diet on electrolyte status in humans. However, the yellow corn bread diet resulted in a somewhat more favorable urina교 sodium to potassium ratio than that from white corn bread or whole wheat bread diet.

방출조절용 항균성 포장재의 개발 및 미생물 생육억제와 물질전달 모델링

  • Potassium Sorbate의 향균능력측정결과 효모(Saccharomyces cerevisiae)의 성장에 대하여 uncompetitive 기작으로 작용하였다. 열처리 실험의 결과 Potassium Sorbate는 가열온도에 대하여 Arrhenius, 또한 가열시간에 대하여 1차반응식관계로 향균능력을 잃었으며 따라서 보존제로 Potassium Sorbate를 식품에 첨가후 포장, 가열살균하는 일반 식품가공공정상에서 가열살균공정이 첨가 보존제의 잔류향균능력을 잃게 하는 것으로 나타났다. 플라스틱 film과 치즈안에서 Potassium Sorbate의 확산계수 및 확산에 의한 물질전달 현상을 수학적모델과 컴퓨터 simulation 그리고 실험에 의해 구하였다. 저밀도폴리에틸렌(LDPE)이 범용플라스틱중에서 가장 작은 확산계수를 가져 빠른 물질전달이 요구되는 film층 또는 약물저장층으로 적합한것으로 나타났다. 그외 고밀도 폴리에틸렌(HDPE)과 폴리프로필렌(PP), 폴리에스터(PET)는 느린 물질전달이 요구되는층 또는 복합다층 film에서 물질전달에 단방향성을 주는 고차단층으로 적합한것으로 나타났다. Potassium Sorbate분말과 LDPE resin분말을 섞은후 단일스크루 익스트루더로 항균성 포장 film을 제조한 결과 LDPE film의 tensile strength과 elongation, elastic modulus는 Potassium Sorbate를 3% 이상 포함할때까지 변화하지 않았다. 그러나 film의 투명도는 급격히 낮아졌다. 향균성LDPE film은 효모가 접종된 한천배지상에서 항균물질인 Potassium Sorbate를 배지위로 서서히 방출시켜 효모의 성장속도(growth rate)를 저하시키고 초기성장지체기(lag period)를 연장시킨다. 따라서 식품포장재로 적용시에 미생물의 오염을 막고 식품저장기간을 연장할것이라 여겨진다.
