In this paper, a problem of Thai sign language recognition using a neural network is considered. The paper addresses the problem in classifying certain signs conveying quantitative meaning, e.g., large or small. By treating those signs corresponding to different quantities as derived from different classes, the recognition error rate of the standard multi-layer Perceptron increases if the precision in recognizing different quantities is increased. This is due the fact that, to increase the quantitative recognition precision of those signs, the number of (increasingly similar) classes must also be increased. This leads to an increase in false classification. The problem is due to misinterpreting the amount of quantity the quantitative signs convey. In this paper, instead of treating those signs conveying quantitative attribute of the same quantity type (such as 'size' or 'amount') as derived from different classes, here they are considered instances of the same class. Those signs of the same quantity type are then further divided into different subclasses according to the level of quantity each sign is associated with. By using this two-level classification, false classification among main gesture classes is made independent to the level of precision needed in recognizing different quantitative levels. Moreover, precision of quantitative level classification can be made higher during the recognition phase, as compared to that used in the training phase. A standard multi-layer Perceptron with a back propagation learning algorithm was adapted in the study to implement this two-level classification of quantitative gesture signs. Experimental results obtained using an electronic glove measurement of hand postures are included.
Virtual human used as HCI in digital contents expresses his various emotions across modalities like facial expression and body posture. However, few studies considered combinations of such nonverbal multimodal in emotion perception. Computational engine models have to consider how a combination of nonverbal modal like facial expression and body posture will be perceived by users to implement emotional virtual human, This paper proposes the impacts of nonverbal multimodal in design of emotion expressed virtual human. First, the relative impacts are analysed between different modals by exploring emotion recognition of modalities for virtual human. Then, experiment evaluates the contribution of the facial and postural congruent expressions to recognize basic emotion categories, as well as the valence and activation dimensions. Measurements are carried out to the impact of incongruent expressions of multimodal on the recognition of superposed emotions which are known to be frequent in everyday life. Experimental results show that the congruence of facial and postural expression of virtual human facilitates perception of emotion categories and categorical recognition is influenced by the facial expression modality, furthermore, postural modality are preferred to establish a judgement about level of activation dimension. These results will be used to implementation of animation engine system and behavior syncronization for emotion expressed virtual human.
This paper handles, pitching and rolling posture change detection using the visual image changes due to the road slope conditions. When the moving vehicle is slanted to a direction, the objects in the visual images of the vehicle are moving to up or down and right or left. This is similar to the human's balancing behavior depending on the visual image change detection as well as the vestibular organs and semicircular canal in the ear. The proposes method shows the visual image through the camera can be used for the image information itself and for the posture change detection through the experiments.

We describe a method for estimating new hand views from a single 2D hand image using decomposed approach with subgroup-based scheme. With this method, we can get the simplicity in the sense of computation by comparing the image with models in the promising subgroup instead of comparing with all models. It shows more effectiveness in recognition by process depend on each subgroup and easy of extension.
Gait is defined as "a manor of walking". It can used as a biometric measure to recognize known persons. Gait is an idiosyncratic feature determined by an individual's weight, stride length, and posture combined with characteristic motion. but its feature extracted from images varies with the viewpoint. In this paper, we propose a gait recognition method using a planer homography, which is robust for viewpoint variation. We represent an individual as key-silhouettes. And we endow key-silhouettes with weight calculated using the characteristic of PCA. Experimental result shows that proposed method is robust for viewpoint variation as images synthesised same viewpoint.
This paper focused on the possibility of face recognition using Flexible let Point Setting method in Gabor Filter Based Face Recognition. Gabor Filter is very sensible to the Texture variation. Therefore, any little change in the face expression or rotation of posture make recognition rate down significantly. A suggested solution for this problem is the Flexible Jet Point Setting. A significant effect of this method is that the number of Jet Point has been reduced from over 150 to under 30 even though the change of recognition rate between two methods is neglectable, Furthermore a set of feature values which results from a set of Gabor filtering became insensible to face variation such as expression, rotation, and light effect. Retinex Algorithm which has been developed by NASA are used as pre-processing.

Physical activities are decreasing and sitting time is increasing due to the automation, smartization, and intelligence of necessary household items throughout daily life. Recent healthcare studies have reported that the likelihood of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and early death increases in proportion to sitting time. In this paper, we develop a sitting posture correction cushion in real time using capacitive pressure sensor based on conductive textile. It develops a pressure sensor using conductive textile, a key component of the posture correction cushion, and develops a low power-based pressure measurement circuit. It provides a function to transmit sensor values measured in real time to smartphones using BLE short-range wireless communication on the posture correction cushion, and develops a mobile application to check the condition of the sitting posture through these sensor values. In the mobile app, you can visualize your sitting posture and check it in real time, and if you keep it in the wrong posture for a certain period of time, you can notify it through an alarm. In addition, it is possible to visualize the sitting time and posture accuracy in a graph. Through the correction cushion in this paper, we experiment with how effective it is to correct the user's posture by recognizing the user's sitting posture, and present differentiation and excellence compared to other product.

In this paper, we propose a sign language recognition system using SVM and depth camera. Especially, we focus on the Korean sign language. For the sign language system, we suggest two methods, one in hand feature extraction stage and the other in recognition stage. Hand features are consisted of the number of fingers, finger length, radius of palm, and direction of the hand. To extract hand features, we use Distance Transform and make hand skeleton. This method is more accurate than a traditional method which uses contours. To recognize hand posture, we develop the decision tree with the hand features. For more accuracy, we use SVM to determine the threshold value in the decision tree. In the experimental results, we show that the suggested method is more accurate and faster when extracting hand features a recognizing hand postures.

This paper presents a multimodal sensor system that can determine the location of house space by analyzing the postures and heights of the residents. It consists of two sensors: a tilt sensor and an altimeter sensor. The tilt sensor measures the static and dynamic postures of the residents, and the altimeter sensor measures their heights. The sensor system includes a Bluetooth transmitter, and the server receives the measured data and determines the location in the house. We describe the process determining the locations of the residents after analyzing their postures and behaviors from the measured data. We also demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed system by applying it to a real environment.

This paper proposes a wearable interface for a tendon-driven robotic hand prosthesis. The proposed interface is composed of a dataglove to measure finger and wrist joint angle, and a micro-control board with a wireless RF module. The interface is used for posture control of the robotic hand prosthesis. The measured joint angles by the dataglove are transferred to the main controller via the wireless module. The controller works for directly controlling the joint angle of the hand or for recognizing hand postures using a pattern recognition method such as LDA and k-NN. The recognized hand postures in this study are the paper, the rock, the scissors, the precision grasp, and the tip grasp. In experiments, we show the performances of the wearable interface including the pattern recognition method.
