  • The herbicidal activities against the pre-emergence of rice plant (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-gall) with changing substituents $(R_1-R_4)$ of new 5-benzofuryl-2-[1-(alkoxyimino) alkyl]-3-hydroxycyclohex-2-en-1-one derivatives as substrate molecules were studied quantitatively using comparative molecular field analyses (CoMFA). The optimized CoMFA models (rice plant: A5 & barnyard grass: B3) were derived from atom based fit alignment and a combination of CoMFA fields. The two models for herbicidal activity against two plants showed the best predictability and fitness ($q^2$>0.6 & ${r^2}_{ncv.}$>0.94) for the herbicidal activities. Also, CoMFA-HINT contour maps showed that the selective herbicidal activity between rice plant and barnyard grass depends on the hydrophobicity of $R_2\;and\;R_3$ groups in molecule. Therefore, it is expected that the herbicidal activity against barnyard grass will be improved by the introduction of the steric bulk small and hydrophobic group.

  • Tetrapion(2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropionate sodium) has commonly been used for reed(Phragmites communis Trin.) control in uncultivated areas, especially in Japan. As an attempt to establish the screening system for selective herbicide controlling reed, tetrapion was tested as a standard herbicide to various weeds and crops including rice in a greenhouse. Symptoms of yellowing, twisting, stunting, and necrosis were observed in the herbicide-treated plants. The herbicide caused a severe damage on all crops examined, except cotton. Both direct seeded and transplanted rice were also sensitive to the herbicide. Its herbicidal activity was generally higher on grass weeds than on broadleaf weeds. It had a higher herbicidal activity with preemergence treatment than with postemergence treatment. In addition, field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to examine the effect of the herbicide on reed control. Its effect varied with the soil type of the treated field and the growth stage of reed. A relatively high dosage of the herbicide was required to control reed. It had an almost same effect on fairygrass(Miscanthus sinensis Anderss) as on reed. However, reed grown in a greenhouse was effectively controlled by the herbicide, having more effect with preemergence treatment than with postemergence treatment as observed in other plants treated with the herbicide. In conclusion, tetrapion has a great potential as a standard herbicide during the herbicide screening for selective reed control.

  • As an ongoing research program for the development of environmentally friendly new herbicide, several hydantoin derivatives 5a - 5i possessing amide subgroup were synthesized and shown to have interesting herbicidal activities exhibiting symptoms as Protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase inhibitor under postemergence upland greenhouse screening. Among derivatives tested, compound 5h showed superior herbicidal activity against upland problem weed, digitaria sanguinalis and aeschynomene indica to reference compound fluthiacet-methyl.
