  • Simulation models allow researchers to model large hydrological catchment for comprehensive management of the water resources and explication of the diffuse pollution processes, such as land-use changes by development plan of the region. Recently, there have been reported many researches that examine water body quality using Geographic Information System (GIS) and dynamic watershed models such as AGNPS, HSPF, SWAT that necessitate handling large amounts of data. The aim of this study is to develop a watershed based water quality estimation system for the impact assessment on stream water quality. KBASIN-HSPF, proposed in this study, provides easy data compiling for HSPF by facilitating the setup and simulation process. It also assists the spatial interpretation of point and non-point pollutant information and thiessen rainfall creation and pre and post processing for large environmental data An integration methodology of GIS and water quality model for the preprocessing geo-morphologic data was designed by coupling the data model KBASIN-HSPF interface comprises four modules: registration and modification of basic environmental information, watershed delineation generator, watershed geo-morphologic index calculator and model input file processor. KBASIN-HSPF was applied to simulate the water quality impact by variation of subbasin pollution discharge structure.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of extracted PRMS input parameters by KGIS-Hydrology over Yongdam-Dam watershed. KGIS-Hydrology is a system for automatic extraction and analysis of watershed characteristic data. Input parameters of PRMS were generated from GIS data (DEM, soil, forest type, etc.) using KGIS-Hydrology. Multi-temporal meteorological data from Jangsu station of KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) were used for all simulation periods. Input parameters of PRMS were optimized using observed runoff data of Yongdam-Dam station (1966-2001) and validated using observed runoff data of Yongdam-Dam station (2002-2006, Yongdam-Dam watershed). The results showed that the simulated flows were much closed to the observed flows of Yongdam-Dam (2002-2006) and Donghyang (2001-2004) station by 0.49~0.83 and 0.57~0.75 model efficiencies, respectively.

  • This paper introduces development of the MATLAB GUI based software for generating GPS RINEX observation file. The purpose of this software is to generate GPS measurements of reference station or dynamic user, which are similar to the real GPS receiver data, accurately and efficiently. This software includes two data generation modes. One is Precision mode which generates GPS measurements as accurate as possible using post-processing data. The other is Real-time mode which generates GPS measurements using GPS error modeling technique. GPS error sources are calculated on the basis of each data generation mode, and L1/L2 pseudorange, L1/L2 carrier phase, and Doppler measurements are produced. These generated GPS measurements are recorded in the RINEX observation version 3.0 file. Using received GPS data at real reference station, we analyzed three items to verify software reliability; measurement bias, rate of change, and noise level. Consequently, RMS error of measurement bias is about 0.7 m, and this verification results demonstrate that our software can generate relatively exact GPS measurements.

  • Reservoir turbidity flows degrade the efficiency and sustainability of water supply system in many countries located in monsoon climate region. A decision support system called RTMMS aimed to assist reservoir operations was developed for the real time monitoring, modeling, and management of turbidity flows induced by flood runoffs in Daecheong reservoir. RTMMS consists of a real time data acquisition module that collects and stores field monitoring data, a data assimilation module that assists pre-processing of model input data, a two dimensional numerical model for the simulation of reservoir hydrodynamics and turbidity, and a post-processor that aids the analysis of simulation results and alternative management scenarios. RTMMS was calibrated using field data obtained during the flood season of 2004, and applied to real-time simulations of flood events occurred on July of 2006 for assessing its predictive capability. The system showed fairly satisfactory performance in reproducing the density flow regimes and fate of turbidity plumes in the reservoir with efficient computation time that is a vital requirement for a real time application. The configurations of RTMMS suggested in this study can be adopted in many reservoirs that have similar turbidity issues for better management of water supply utilities and downstream aquatic ecosystem.

  • The toxicities of contaminated soils with 8 consecutive year applications of three levels (12.5, 25.0, and $50.0t\;dry\;matter\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$) of four organic sludge [municipal sewage sludge (MSS), industrial sewage sludge (ISS), alcohol fermentation processing sludge (AFPS) and leather processing sludge (LPS)] on earthworm (Eisenia fetida) were examined by using microcosm container in the laboratory. Results were compared with those of pig manure compost (PMC) treated soil. In tests with three treatment levels (12.5, 25.0, and 50.0 t per plot), ISS treated soil showed higher contents of Cu (18.9~26.2 fold), Cr (7.7~34.7 fold), and Ni (14.8~18.8 fold) at 8 years post treatment, than PMC treated soil. LPS treated soil showed higher contents of Cr (35.7~268.0 fold) and Ni (4.5~7.6 fold) than PMC treated soil. There were no great differences in heavy metal contents among MSS, AFPS, and PMC treated soils. In these contaminated soils, earthworm mortalities of MSS and AFPS treated soils at 8 weeks post-exposure were similar to those of PMC treated soil regardless of each treatment level. Toxic effect (26.7~96.7 mortality) on the ISS and LPS treated soils was significantly higher than one of PMC treated soil, with an exception of LPS soil treated with 25.0 t per plot. At 16 weeks post-exposure, earthworm mortalities of AFPS' 12.5 and 25.0 t treated soils were similar to those of PMC treated soil. Toxic effect (53.3~100 mortality) on the 12.5, 25.0, and 50.0 t treated soils of MSS, ISS and LPS, and AFPS' 50.0 t treated soils was significantly higher than those of PMC treated soil. The data suggested that the 12.5, 25.0, and 50.0 t of MSS, ISS and LPS, and AFPS' 50.0 t treated soils were evaluated to have toxicity on earthworm.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze microbial hazards for cultivation environments and personal hygiene of strawberry and tomato farms at the growth and harvesting stage. Samples were collected from thirty strawberry farms and forty tomato farms located in Korea and tested for Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. To investigate the change in the distribution of the S. aureus and B. cereus, a total of 4,284 samples including air born, soil or medium, mulching film, harvest basket, groves and irrigation water etc. were collected from eight strawberry farms and nine tomato farms for one year. As a result, total S. aureus and B. cereus in all samples were detected. Among the total bacteria of strawberry farms, S. aureus (glove: $0{\sim}2.1Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, harvest basket: $0{\sim}3.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, soil or culture media: 0~4.1 Log CFU/g, mulching film: $0{\sim}3.8Log\;CFU/100cm^2$), B. cereus (glove: $0{\sim}2.8Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, harvest basket: $0{\sim}4.8Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, soil or culture media: 0~5.3 Log CFU/g, mulching film: $0{\sim}4.5Log\;CFU/100cm^2$) were detected in all samples. The total bacteria of tomato farms, S. aureus (glove: $0{\sim}4.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, harvest basket: $0{\sim}5.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, soil or culture media: 0~6.1 Log CFU/g, mulching film: $0{\sim}4.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$), B. cereus (glove: $0{\sim}4.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, harvest basket: $0{\sim}4.3Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, soil or culture media: 0~5.9 Log CFU/g, mulching film: $0{\sim}4.7Log\;CFU/100cm^2$) were detected in all samples. The contamination of S. aureus and B. cereus were detected in soil, mulching film and harvest basket from planting until harvest to processing, with the highest count recorded from the soil. But S. aureus and B. cereus were not detected in irrigation water samples. The incidence of S. aureus and B. cereus in hydroponics culture farm were less than those in soil culture. The amount of S. aureus and B. cereus detected in strawberry and tomato farms were less than the minimum amount required to produce a toxin that induces food poisoning. In this way, the degree of contamination of food poisoning bacteria was lower in the production environment of the Korea strawberry and tomato, but problems can be caused by post-harvest management method. These results will be used as fundamental data to create a manual for sanitary agricultural environment management, and post-harvest management should be performed to reduce the contamination of hazardous microorganisms.

  • In Korea, 2,320 tonnes of acetanilide were mostly wed as intermediates for synthesis in phar-maceuticals or additives in synthesizing hydrogen peroxide, varnishes, polymers and rubber. Only small amount of 120 kg were wed as a stabilizer for hydrogen peroxide solution for hair colouring agents in 1998. Readily available environmental or human exposure data do not exist in Korea at the present time. However, potential human exposures from drinking water, food, ambient water and in work places are expected to be negligible because this chemical is produced in the closed system in only one company in Korea and the processing factory is equipped with local ventilation and air filtering system. Acetanilide could be distributed mainly to water based on EQC model. This substance is readily biodegradable and its bioaccumulation is low. Acute toxicity of acetanilide is low since the L $D_{50}$ of oral exposure in rats is 1,959 mg/kg bw. The chemical is not irritating to skin, but slightly irritating to the eyes of rabbits. horn repeated dose toxicity, the adverse effects in rats were red pulp hyperplasia of spleen, bone marrow hyperplasia of femur and decreased hemoglobin, hematocrit and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. The LOAEL for repeated dose toxicity in rats was 22 mg/kg/day for both sexes. Acetanilide is not considered to be genotoxic. In a reproductive/developmental toxicity study, no treatment-related changes in precoital time and rate of copulation, impregnation, pregnancy were shown in all treated groups. The NOAELs for reproduction and developmental toxicity (off-spring toxicity) are considered to be 200 mg/kg bw/day and 67 mg/kg bw/day, respectively. Ecotoxicity data has been generated in a limited number of aquatic species of algae (72 hr- $E_{b}$ $C_{50}$; 13.5 mg/l), daphnid (48hr-E $C_{50}$ > 100 mg/l) and fish (Oryzias latipes, 96hr-L $C_{50}$; 100 mg/l). Form the acute toxicity values, the predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) of 0.135 mg/1 was derived win an assessment factor of 100. On the basis of these data, acetanilide was suggested as currently of low priority for further post-SIDS work in OECD.in OECD.D.

  • Many trials to set up the correlation between the rock mass classification and the earth resistivity have been carried out to design tunnel support type based on the interpreted electrical resistivity acquired by surface electrical survey. But it is hard to find reports on the comparison of the real rock support type determined during the excavation with the electrical resistivity by the inversion of the survey data acquired before the tunneling. In this study, the rock mass classification based on the face mapping data and the resistivity inversion data are investigated to see if it is possible to design reliably the rock support type based on the surface electrical survey. To get the quantitative correlation, rock engineering indices such as RCR(rock condition rating), N(Rock mass number), Q-system and RMR(rock mass rating) are calculated. Since resistivity data has low resolution, Kriging method as a post processing technique which minimizes the estimated variance is used to improve resolution. The result of correlation analysis shows that the 2D electrical resistivity survey is appropriate to see the general trend of the geology in the sense of rock type, though there might be some local area where these two factors do not coincide. But the correlation between the result of 3D survey and the rock mass classification turns out to be very high, and then 3D electrical resistivity survey can make it possible to set up more reliable rock support type.
