A Trend Analysis of Competition Positioning in Korean Seaport by Using BCG Matrix

  • This paper has shown the trend of competition positioning of 26 Korean ports in 1994, 1999, and 2003 by using BCG matrix which consists of relative market shares, growth rate of cargo handling, and also growth rate and CCR and BCC efficiency scores with scale efficiency scores in the vertical and horizontal axes. The empirical main results are as follows. First, Incheon Port, Pyungtag Port, Gwangyang Port, Busan Port, Pohang Port and Woolsan Port have shown their competitive positioning in terms of market share and growth rate. Second, Pyungtag Port, Wando Port, Tongyoung Port, Gohyun Port, Samcheog Port, and Okgae Port have their competitive positioning in terms of growth rate and scale efficiency scores. The main policy implication of this paper is to emphasize that BCG matrix method using in this paper can give seaport manager the basic information for planning the future port management for enhancing the competitive positioning among Korean seaports.

An Analysis of Container Port Efficiency in ASEAN

  • In order to improve the overall ASEAN maritime transport network, each port's efficiency is regarded as a crucial factor that should be calculated periodically. This study evaluated the relative efficiency of container port operations of 32 ports belonging to 9 ASEAN nations using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). It found that 2 out of 32 ports in 2010 were measured as efficient ports. This study yielded two major findings. Firstly, the ports assessed as inefficient need to benchmark similar ports in size and structure from the ports that are assessed as efficient to improve their efficiency. Secondly, these results could be used to determine potential candidates and country for an international port development co-operation programme with Korea to improve the performance of the entire ASEAN port network by developing the infrastructures of ill-equipped ports.

Efficiency Analysis of Port Companies in China Using DEA and the Malmquist Method

  • The efficiency of port operations is an important indicator of port development. Moreover, there is excess handling capacity in Chinese ports, which results in a slower speed of development. Under the detrimental environment of the international shipping market, it is necessary to improve the operation efficiency of ports for long-term development. This paper provides an assessment of the competitiveness of Chinese seaport companies using the Boston Consulting Group's matrix, and efficiency measurements using a data envelopment analysis and the Malmquist method. This analysis showed that highly efficient companies reformed their development strategies, which should be a solution considered by less efficient companies, such as Shenzhen Yan Tian Port Holdings Co., Ltd.. Although, having high throughput should be reformed in the investment structure. This research will assist port companies in gaining effective operating experience, and governments in establishing strategic planning to enhance the efficiency of port development.

Container Terminal Efficiency Measurement Using Data Envelopment Analysis: Pre-Pandemic Comparison of Colombo and Busan

  • Increasing port competition driven by the containerisation has motivated ports and terminals to focus on their performance to efficiently utilise the available resources and to make strategic decisions in port development and expansion. With both inter-port andintra-port competition increasing in the port of Colombo, this study aims to measure the efficiency of the container terminals in Colombo comparing to terminals in the port of Busan using the DEA window analysis to determine their operational efficiency and to provide suggestions for future port development activities. Multiple window analyses were conducted using CCR and BCC models with different orientations and window lengths to compare the efficiencies of 11 DMUs in both ports during the period from 2015-2019 to measure the efficiencies prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Results revealed the largest terminal operator, PNC in Busan, to be the most efficient overall, while the second highest efficiency was recorded by one of the smallest terminal operators, SAGT in Colombo, among the sample. Although use of DEA in port performance measurement has been popular for many years, efficiency measurements in the port of Colombo, the main hub port in the South Asian region, has not been comprehensively studied so far.

주성분분석 및 군집분석을 이용한 컨테이너항만의 분류 (Classification of International Container Ports by Using Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis)

  • The subject of port efficiency is one of the important issues facing port authorities and policy makers today. A number of studies have been undertaken which compare ports in terms of their efficiency. But any port comparison can only be valid and meaningful if a port’s efficiency is compared with a similar port. The main objective of this paper is to introduce a systematic approach to identifying similar ports based on the technique of principal component analysis and cluster analysis. And it seeks to identify the most important factors underlying the port classification. Lack of awareness of which factors differentiate ports has resulted in an unnecessary collection of data which are of limited use in port classification. This paper has identified five groupings of similar ports within which port comparision can be justifiably made. This approach can be used for any future port comparision.

Analysis on Output Efficiency of Chinese Listed Port Companies Based on DEA Model

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to propose strategies of improving efficiency of 20 listed port companies in China based on analysis of their input-output indexes from 2014 to 2018. Research design, data, and methodology - In this paper, the relevant input-output indicators of 20 listed port companies in China from 2014 to 2018 were adopted. Data derived from the company annual reports announced by Shanghai stock exchange and Shenzhen stock exchange. Comprehensive efficiency and pure technical efficiency were measured from output perspective by DEA and Malmquist index, and efficiency changes and regional efficiency were analyzed. Result - The results showed that the efficiency value of 20 listed port companies in China fluctuated and increased during 2014-2018, regional efficiency was unbalanced, and change of MPI was influenced by internal factors and external factors. Listed port companies affected by internal and external factors needed to make appropriate response to internal and external factors. Conclusion - The research conclusion can provide important reference information about management and planning for port companies in China and related areas. However, this paper is limited to the availability of data. So the improvement scheme for listed companies in inefficient regional ports needs further study, such as using AHP method.

Efficiency Measurement of Major Container Terminals in Asia

  • Due to the growth of container traffic and port competition, ports have increasingly been under pressure to improve their efficiency in port operation and port management for competitive edge. The purpose of this study is to compare the technical efficiency among major container terminals in China, Korea and Singapore using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This paper analyses the returns-to-scale using the output orientation of VRS and CRS model. The benefits of this study examining the relative performance of container terminals will enable container terminal operating companies or port policy makers in those countries to identify current slacks and to set up a proper port management and operation plan to improve their productivity.

DEA/초효율법을 이용한 항만노무 효율성 분석 (An Analysis of Technical Efficiency of Port Labor Using DEA/Super Efficiency)

  • 본 연구는 3개의 투입변수와 3개의 산출변수로 구성된 DEA법을 이용하여 우리나라 항만의 노무효율성을 측정 평가하였다. 대상항만의 전체 기술적 효율성은 평균 94.18% 수준이었으며, 순수 기술적 효율성은 100%로 나타났고 규모의 효율성은 94.18%로 전체 기술적 비효율성이 가장 높게 나타났다. 분석결과 7개의 항만은 효율적인 항만으로 측정되었고 4개의 항만은 비효율적 항만으로 측정되었다. 4개의 비효율적 항만중 규모에 대한 수익체증은 동해항으로 나타났다. 그러나 비효율적인 항만들은 생산규모의 비효율성보다 자원운영의 비효율성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 한편 초효율법을 이용하여 효율적인 항만의 우선순위를 분석한 결과 인천항, 목포항, 평택당진항, 마산항, 여수광양항, 제주항, 군산대산항 순으로 효율성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 특히 비효율적인 부산항은 목포항 및 인천항을 벤치마킹하여 항만 물동량의 증대, 장비의 현대화 및 노무효율성의 향상을 위해 전면적인 노무상용화가 필요하다.

Comparative Port Performance Analysis of Italian Ports

  • Recently, the fierce competitions in the shipping industry and the global economic downturn have heavily influenced ports' operational strategies. In order for port authorities to remain competitive at an international level and to provide more accurate information to develop National policies, ports are required to analyse and improve operations' efficiency. In this paper, the efficiency of 19 Italian ports in 2013, handling different types of cargoes, is assessed through the application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), with constant return to scale (CRS) and variable return to scale (VRS). The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency of Italian ports and evaluate whether differences in size and specialization of each port (or cargo handled) are directly correlated with ports' efficiency.

Efficiency Analysis of Spanish Container Ports Using Undesirable Variables and the Malmquist Index

  • Spain is Europe's second-largest country with total throughput reaching 16.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) by 2020. The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the efficiency of 17 container terminals. As a study method, the DEA-CCR model, undesirable variable, and Malmquist Index (MI) were used for data envelopment analysis (DEA). The study results are as follow: (1) DEA-CCR is used to evaluate basic efficiency. The most efficient terminals are decision-making units DMU 1 (APM Terminals (Algeciras Port)), DMU 2 (Total Terminal International Algeciras (Algeciras Port)) and DMU 5 (Barcelona Europe South Terminal (Barcelona Port)). (2) Undesirable DEA was conducted to suggest inefficiency from the undesirable output. Overall, the efficiency scores were reduced. However, DMU 1, DMU 2, and DMU 5 maintained efficiency scores regardless of the finish factor. (3) Malmquist Index was used to observe technology and efficiency changes dynamically. The changes in TCI affected Spanish container terminals more than the Technical Efficiency Change Index (TECI) in 2018-2019. However, in 2019-2020, the TECI was 2.706, higher than the TCI value, indicating that the change in TECI had more influence on the increase in productivity. This study offers a broader understanding of Spanish container terminals.
