Falling film heat transfer has been widely used in many applications in which heat and mass transfer occur simultaneously, such as evaporative coolers, cooling towers, absorption chillers, etc. In such cases, it is desirable that the falling film spreads widely on the surface to form a thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface and to reduce the thermal resistance across the film and/or the flow resistance to the vapor stream over the film. In this respect, hydrophilic treatment of the surface has been tried to improve the surface wettability by decreasing the contact angle between the liquid and the surface. However, the hydrophilic treatment was found not very effective to increase the surface wettedness of inclined surfaces, since the liquid flow forms rivulet patterns instead of a thin film as it flows down the inclined surface and accelerates gradually by the gravity. In this work, a novel method is suggested to improve the surface wettedness enormously. In this work, the surface is treated to have a thin hydrophilic porous layer on the surface. With this treatment, the liquid can spread widely on the surface by the capillary force resulting from the porous structure. In addition to this, the liquid can be held within the porous structure to improve surface wettedness regardless of the surface inclination. The experiment on the evaporative cooling of inclined surfaces has been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the surface treatment. It is measured that the latent heat transfer increases almost by $80\%$ at the hydrophilic porous layer coated surface as compared with the untreated surface.
A luminescent porous silicon sensor, whose surface was passivated with organic molecule via hydrosilylation under various conditions, has been researched to measure the photoluminescence (PL) stability of porous silicon (PSi). Photoluminescent PSi were synthesized by an electrochemical etching of n-type silicon wafer under the illumination with a 300 W tungsten filament bulb during the etching process. The PL of PSi displayed at 650 nm, which is due to the quantum confinement of silicon quantum dots in the PSi. To stabilized the photoluminescence of PSi, the hydrosilylation of PSi with silole molecule containg vinyl group was performed. Surface morphologies of fresh PSi and surface-modified PSi were obtained with a cold FE-SEM. Optical characterization of red photoluminescent silicon quantum dots was investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectrometer.
Novel porous silicon chip exhibiting dual optical properties, both Frbry-Perot fringe (optical reflectivity) and photoluminescence had been developed and used as chemical sensors. Porous silicon samples were prepared by an electrochemical etch of p-type sillicon wafer (boron-doped, <100> orientation, resistivity 1 - 10 ${\Omega}$). The ething solution was prepared by adding an equal volume of pure ethanol to an aqueous solution of HF (48% by weight). The porous silicon was illuminated with a 300 W tungsten lamp for the duration of etch. Ething was carried out as a two-electrode Kithley 2420 preocedure at an anodic current. The surface of porous silicon was characterized by FT-IR instrument. The porosity of samples was about 80%. Three different types of porous silicon, fresh porous silicon (Si-H termianated), oxidized porous silicon (Si-OH terminated), and surface-derivatized porous silicon (Si-R terminated), were prepared by the thermal oxidation and hydrosilylation. Then the samples were exposed to the wapor of various organics vapors. such as chloroform, hexane, methanol, benzene, isopropanol, and toluene. Both reflectivity and photoluminescence were simultaneously measured under the exposure of organic wapors.
The carbon electrode was modified through manganese-catalyzed hydrogenation method for high energy density vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). During the catalytic hydrogenation, the manganese oxide deposited at the surface of the carbon electrode stimulated the conversion reaction from carbon to methane gas. This reaction causes the penetration of the manganese and excavates a number of cavities at electrode surface, which increases the electrochemical activity by inducing additional electrochemically active site. The formation of the porous surface was confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Finally, the electrochemical performance test of the electrode with the porous surface showed lower polarization and high reversibility in the cathodic reaction compared to the conventional electrode.
Formaldehyde emissions from the construct was harmful to human. Diatomite, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for fabricating panels. Formaldehyde adsorption and physical characteristics of porous materials were investigated and hydrothermal method was applied to fabricate panels. Formaldehyde adsorption contents of panels with porous materials were higher than that of panel without porous materials. The panels with Cheolwon diatomite and Pohang zeolite showed excellent characteristics of Formaldehyde adsorption. These characteristics were caused by higher surface area and pore volume of porous materials. Formaldehyde adsorption contents were influenced by surface area and pore volume of panels. Correlation coefficient between surface area and Formaldehyde adsorption content of panels was 0.87. The panels with porous materials had higher strength than that without porous materials because of bridging role particles.
Reduction of optical losses in crystalline silicon solar cells by surface modification is one of the most important issues of silicon photovoltaics. Porous Si layers on the front surface of textured Si substrates have been investigated with the aim of improving the optical losses of the solar cells, because an anti-reflection coating(ARC) and a surface passivation can be obtained simultaneously in one process. We have demonstrated the feasibility of a very efficient porous Si ARC layer, prepared by a simple, cost effective, electrochemical etching method. Silicon p-type CZ (100) oriented wafers were textured by anisotropic etching in sodium carbonate solution. Then, the porous Si layers were formed by electrochemical etching in HF solutions. After that, the properties of porous Si in terms of morphology, structure and reflectance are summarized. The structure of porous Si layers was investigated with SEM. The formation of a nanoporous Si layer about 100nm thick on the textured silicon wafer result in a reflectance lower than 5% in the wavelength region from 500 to 900nm. Such a surface modification allows improving the Si solar cell characteristics. An efficiency of 13.4% is achieved on a monocrystalline silicon solar cell using the electrochemical technique.

In this study, a computational analysis is conducted to investigate the effects of porous surfaces on the lift and drag forces of the flat plate. With the porous treatment, it is found that the strength of the Karman vortex as well as its influences over the trailing-edge surface are much weakened, resulting in significant reduction of the pressure fluctuations over the flat plate. The drag and lift coefficients are decreased by 85% and 18%, respectively, compared to the solid surface. The computed results also indicate that the size of the porous surface area does not have much influences but the back side of the flat plate has non-negligible effects on the interaction between the wall and the Karman vortex. As a result, the lift coefficient for the solid back side case is decreased only by 50.5% compared to the solid case and the drag coefficient is even increased by 65%.
A Monte Carlo simulation based on Potts model in a three dimensional lattice was studied to analyze and design microstructures in porous sintered compacts such as porosity, pore size, grain (particle) size and contiguity of grains. The effect of surface energy of particles and the content of additional fine particles to coarse particles on microstructure development were examined to obtain fundamentals for material design in porous materials. It has been found that the larger surface energy enhances sintering (necking) of particles and increases contiguity and surface energy does not change pore size and grain size. The addition of fine particles also enhances sintering of particles and increases contiguity, but it has an effect on increment of pore size and grain size. Such a simulation technique can give us important information or wisdom for design of porous materials, e.g., material system with high surface energy and fine particle audition are available for higher strength and larger porosity in porous sintered compacts with applications in an automobile.
