This paper deals with the characteristics of reinforcement corrosion in concrete beams under the influence of sustained loads. The evolution and distribution laws of the reinforcement corrosion were measured periodically over time. The results show that sustained load exhibits a pronounced exacerbating effect on the reinforcement corrosion, and enlarges the nonuniformity level of corrosion as the load level increases. Accompanied with the continuous formation of the rust, the corrosion rate was also observed to be highly nonlinear and time-dependent. Moreover, to visually and quantitatively analyze the distribution of reinforcement corrosion, the 3D scanning technology combined with the probability statistics analysis was adopted, and the observed nonuniformity can be well described by the Gumbel distribution. Finally, an approach based on the three-phase spherical model was proposed to estimate the reinforcement corrosion, taking account of the effects of sustained load on the changes of concrete porosity and oxygen diffusivity.
The size, morphology and distribution of pores which affect on the physical properties of thermal barrier coatings were investigated to find the relationship with spraying parameters. The plasma-sprayed zirconia coatings contained numerous micropores as well as macropores which were appeared as spherical and irregular pores, and cracks. The pore formation process and its characteristics were varied with spraying distance. Porosity itself was varied with spraying parameters such as spray gun current, gas flow rate and the gas used(Ar or $N_2). The Porosity of coatings was ranged from 10 to 18% with the variation of spraying conditions. The relative hardness measured by the scratch test, showed strong dependence on the porosity of coatings rather than spraying parameters.
Extrusion-spheronization processing combination was used to produce spherical granules with experimental formulations which contain microcrystalline cellulose as a diluent. The produced granules were compared on the basis of the following physical properties ; (a) bulk density, (e) porosity, (f) friabillity and (g) dissolution rate. With the specific experimental formulations used in this study, the increased plate rotational speeds of Marumerizer (400-1200rpm) produced continually more spherical material and also the obtained data indicated that the particle size distribution and dissolution rate depend upon the amount of microcrystalline cellulose used. As a result, the spherical granule preparation with microcrystalline cellulose has good properties in flow rate, packing propertyu and friability and offers a suitable method of granule preparation in pharmaceutical industry.
The phenomena of detachment and movement of One particles are one of the important mechanisms both in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. In geoenvironmental engineering, in particular, movement of fine particles may facilitate the transport of contaminants since the particle surfaces absorb contaminants before movement. Weathered granitic residual soils, which are the most abundant in Korea. contain large quantities of fine particles up to 50%. The characteristics of fine particle movement of weathered granitic residual soils are investigated in this paper. Samples are obtained from Poiiong, Shinnaedong in Seoul and Andong in Kyungpook : each of the samples represents typical residual soil types in Korea. Laboratory experiments for the three adopted soil types are performed. It is found that effluent concentration of the samples is influenced by porosity, fine particle percentage and particle size distribution. The critical velocity decreases as the fine particle percentage increases and the rate of change of erosion rate increases as the porosity increases. And well-graded samples showed less effluent concentrations compared to poorly-graded samples. The governing equation on the physical mechanism of fine particle movement and its nomerical solution scheme are suggested on the basis of the test results.
Hydrolysis of inulin was investigated employing various commercially available resin catalysts for the production of high grade fructose syrup. The particle size and porosity of the resin significantly affected the distribution of the products, indicating that the intraparticle diffusion of reactants controls thc selectivity as well as the reaction rate. To confirm the effect of the intraparticle diffusion, two different types of resin catalysts were prepared: the one having sulfonic acid group distributed uniformly throughout genular microparticles (A-type) and the other having sulfonic acid group located mainly at the exterior surface of genular microparticles (E-type). The results were found that the reaction rate and the selectivity of the E-type catalyst were higher than those of the A-type catalyst.
The formation of a thicker hard alloyed layer have been investigated on the surface of aluminum cast alloy (AC2B) by PTA overlaying process with Cr, Cu and Ni motel powders under the condition of overlaying current 125-200A. overlaying speed 150 mm/min and different powder feeding rate 5-20 g/min. In addition the characteristics of hardening and wear resistance of alloyed layer here been examined in relation to the microstructure of alloyed layer. Main results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) There was an optimum overlaying condition to get a good alloyed layer with smooth surface. This good layer became easy to be formed as increasing overlaying current and decreasing powder feeding rate under a constant overlaying speed. 2) Cu powder was the most superior one in metal powders used due to a wide optimum overlaying condition range, uniform hardness distribution of Hv250-350, good oar resistance and freedom from cracking in alloyed layer with fine hyper-eutectic structure. 3) On the contrary, irregular hardness distribution was usually obtained in Cr ar Ni alloyed layers of which hardness was increased as Cr or Ni contents and reached to maximum hardness of about Hv400-850 at about 60wt%cr or 40wt%Ni in alloyed layer. 4) Cracking occurred in Cr or Ni alloyed layers with higher hardness than Hv250-300 at mere than 20-25wt% of Cr or Ni contents in alloyed layer. Porosity was observed in all alloyed layers but decreased by usage of spherical powder with smooth surface.

In current investigation, a novel beam finite element model is formulated to analyze the buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded porous beams resting on Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundations. The novelty lies in the formulation of a simplified finite element model with only three degrees of freedom per node, integrating both C0 and C1 continuity requirements according to Lagrange and Hermite interpolations, respectively, in isoparametric coordinate while emphasizing the impact of z-coordinate-dependent porosity on vibration and buckling responses. The proposed model has been validated and demonstrating high accuracy when compared to previously published solutions. A detailed parametric examination is performed, highlighting the influence of porosity distribution, foundation parameters, slenderness ratio, and boundary conditions. Unlike existing numerical techniques, the proposed element achieves a high rate of convergence with reduced computational complexity. Additionally, the model's adaptability to various mechanical problems and structural geometries is showcased through the numerical evaluation of elastic foundations, with results in strong agreement with the theoretical formulation. In light of the findings, porosity significantly affects the mechanical integrity of FGP beams on elastic foundations, with the advanced beam element offering a stable, efficient model for future research and this in-depth investigation enriches porous structure simulations in a field with limited current research, necessitating additional exploration and investigation.
In order to measure the filtration characteristics of a cotton ball shape filter, the experiments of suspended solids(SS) surrogate material selection and filtration performance have been carried out in this study. Between the two materials of powdered activated carbon(PAC) and powdered red-clay, PAC is more suitable surrogate material in terms of experimental criteria and particle size distribution in the non-point source pollutants removal system. As a result of the filtration experiments with the cotton ball shape filter, the initial headloss was about 8 cm, and the headloss slightly increased over filtration time. The Kozeny-Carman equation was used to analyze the changes of pressure and porosity during the filtration. The initial porosity was calculated as 0.945 and it decreased to 0.936 at the end of design filtration time. As the filtration continued, the SS concentration of the filtered water gradually increased and the SS removal rate gradually decreased. When the SS target removal efficiency is assumed to be 80%, the cumulative SS removal capacity is expected as $28.8kg/m^2$. This means the volume loading rate of the cotton ball shape filter can be $115m^3/m^2$ when the typical SS concentration of non-point source water pollution is assumed as 250 mg/L.

This experimental study investigated the effect of silica fume mixed in concrete blocks on laser-induced explosion behavior. We used a 5.3 kW fiber laser as a thermal source to induce explosive spalling on a concrete surface blended with and without silica fume. An analytical approach based on the difference in the removal rate and thermal behavior was used to determine the effect of silica fume on laser-induced explosive spalling. A scanner was employed to calculate the laser-scabbled volume of the concrete surface to derive the removal rate. The removal rate of the concrete mixed with silica fume was higher than that of without silica fume. Thermal images acquired during scabbling were used to qualitatively analyze the thermal response of laser-induced explosive spalling on the concrete surface. At the early stage of laser heating, an uneven spatial distribution of surface temperature appeared on the concrete blended with silica fume because of frequent explosive spalling within a small area. By contrast, the spalling frequency was relatively lower in laser-heated concrete without silica fume. Furthermore, we observed that a larger area was removed via a single explosive spalling event owing to its high porosity.
Varing the flow velocity of solution and particle diameter, the mass transfer coefficient of the local electrode on current feeder has been measured in an empty flow reactor, an inert fluidized bed electrode reactor, and an active fluidized bed electrode reactor. It had its maximium value when the bed porosity was 0.6 to 0.65 and decreased with in- creasing the height of local electrode. The mass transfer coefficient was found to be high especially when higher particle was fluidized. Electrochemical deposition of copper dissolved in the synthesized wastewater has been performed in the active fluidized bed electrode reactor. The deduction rate was higher than 90% and the residual concentration of copper decreased to less than 5ppm.
