Isotropic pitch-based carbon fiber has been activated by steam diluted in nitrogen in order to characterize the microporosity. Especially, 40 wt% burn-off ACFs were prepared from different conditions to compare the pore structure and size. The ACFs were thinly sliced to investigate the inside pores by TEM and image analyzer. As expected, the adsorption characteristics of these ACFs were quite different from one another because of different pore structure and size. Most pores are not slit-shaped but rather round. Small round micropores become broad and irregular as increasing the activation time and temperature.
Porous alumina was fabricated from pressureless powder packing forming method using powders granulated by spray drying. It was investigated the pore size distribution of fabricated porous alumina. The results of microstructural observation showed that intraganular pore size and intragranular pore size. At 1700$^{\circ}C$ there were no intragranular pores but it showed homogeneous distribution of intergranular pore size. The bending strength and shrinkage increased as porosity decreased. In case of thermal shock resistance sudden decrease of bending strength to $\Delta$T was not shown because intergranular large pore prevented sudden crack propagation.
Concrete is a heterogeneous material containing many weaknesses such as micro-cracks, pores and grain boundaries. The crack growth mechanism and failure behavior of concrete structures depend on the plastic deformation created by these weaknesses. In this article the non-linear finite element method is used to analyze the effect of presence of micro pore near a crack tip on both of the characteristics of crack tip plastic zone (its shape and size) and crack growth properties (such as crack growth length and crack initiation angle) under pure shear loading. The FE Code Franc2D/L is used to carry out these objectives. The effects of the crack-pore configurations and the spacing between micro pore and pre-excising crack tip on the characteristics of crack tip plastic zone and crack growth properties is highlighted. Based on the obtained results, the relative distance between the crack tip and the micro pore affects in very significant way the shape and the size of the crack tip plastic zone. Furthermore, crack growth length and crack initiation angle are mostly influenced by size and shape of plastic zone ahead of crack tip. Also the effects of pore decrease on the crack tip by variation of pore situation from linear to perpendicular configuration. The critical position for a micro pore is in front of the crack tip.
The influence of hot pressing on the pore structures of Nafion membranes was investigated by observing the Nafion before and after hot pressing with $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The freezing point depression and chemical shift data of water in the Nafion indicated the presence of two different pore size ranges in Nafion. Hot pressing mainly reduced the sizes and number of the big pores. The reduction of water uptake and proton conductivity after hot pressing was explained by this variation of pore size and number. We demonstrated the potential application of chemical shift data and NMR cryoporometry experiments to measure the relative pore sizes, on a nano scale, and numbers.

Metal nanohoneycomb structures were fabricated by E-beam evaporation and a two-step anodization process in phosphoric acid. Their tribological properties of adhesion and friction were investigated by AFM in relation to the pore size of the nanohoneycomb structures. Variations of the adhesive force are not found with pore size, but formation of the pore greatly reduces the adhesive force compared to the absence of pore structure. The coefficient of friction increased nonlinearly with pore size, due to surface undulation around the pore. Tribological properties do not differ greatly between the original nanohoneycomb structure and the metal nanohoneycomb structure.
Effects of binder addition on the porosity, pore size and grain size of PZT ceramics were investigated. The binders were used PVA, PEG and MC, they were added separately and simultaneously. After sintering for 90 min 125$0^{\circ}C$, the porosity and the pore size were determined by using an image processing method. Simultaneous addition of two different binders resulted in the highest sintered density and the large pore size.
The purpose of this study was to investigate membrane fouling caused by microalgal cells in submerged membrane systems consisting of polymeric and ceramic microfiltration membranes. In this study, one polymeric (flat-sheet, pore size: $0.2{\mu}m$) and two ceramic (flat-sheet, pore size: $0.2{\mu}m$ and cylindrical, pore size: $1{\mu}m$) membranes were used. Physical cleaning was performed with water and air to determine the potential for reversible and irreversible membrane fouling. The study results showed that substantial irreversible membrane fouling (after four filtration cycles, irreversible fouling degree 27% (cleaning with water) and 38% (cleaning with air)) occurs in the polymeric membrane. In cleaning studies performed using water and air on ceramic membranes, it was observed that compressed air was more effective (recovery rate: 87-91%) for membrane cleaning. The harvesting performance of the membranes was examined through critical flux experiments. The critical flux values for polymeric membrane with a pore size of $0.20{\mu}m$ and ceramic membranes with a pore size of $0.20{\mu}m$ and $1{\mu}m$ were ${\leq}95L/m^2hour$, ${\leq}70L/m^2hour$ and ${\leq}55L/m^2hour$, respectively. It was determined that critical flux varies depending on the membrane material and the pore size. To obtain more information on membrane fouling caused by microalgal cells, the characterization of the fouled polymeric membrane was performed. This study concluded that ceramic membranes with a pore size of $0.2-1{\mu}m$ in the submerged membrane system could be efficiently used for microalgae harvesting by cleaning the membrane with compressed air at regular intervals.

Boehmite sols have been prepared by crystallization of amorphous aluminum hydroxide gel obtained by hydrolysis and peptization of aluminum using acetic acid. The size of the boehmite crystallites could be controlled by Al molar concentration in amorphous gel by means of controlling grain growth at nucleation stage. The size of boehmite increases as a function of Al molar concentration. With increasing boehmite crystallite size, the $d_{(020)}$ spacing and the specific surface area decreases, whereas the pore volume increases along with pore size. Especially, the pore size of the boehmite sol particles is comparable to the crystallite size along the b axis, suggesting that the fibril thickness along the b axis among the crystallite dimensions of the boehmite contributes to the pore size. Therefore, the physical properties of boehmite sols can be determined by the crystallite size controlled as a function of initial Al concentration.
This paper was intended to find out the relationship between optical and interior properties of coated paper and printability with the variation of particle size of ground calcium carbonate(GCC) by using Mercury Porosimeter, and to find out the pore properties of coated paper as well. The viscosity and water retention of coating color was increased and smothness, sheet gloss and porosity of coated paper were improved as the particle size of GCC was decreased. However, there was no difference in opacity and brightness of coated paper. The pore volume of coated paper was decreased, but the number of pores was drastically increased according to the decrease of the particle size of GCC. The weight of ink transferred into coated paper was increased in proportion to pore volume of coated paper. However, the weight of damping water and ink induced toward coated paper was slightly increased. Ink setting was accelerated printing gloss was not changed. Therefore, optical and interior properties of coated paper seemed to be affected by the pore property of coated paper and printability was also affected by it.
