The $TiO_2$ foam synthesized using freeze-casting is a promising photocatalyst and photovoltaic electrode for a variety of energy applications, because the freeze-casting technique is easy to use, cheap, and suitable for mass-production. Despite its several advantages, little scientific information is available on the processing and morphology of the $TiO_2$ foams processed by freeze-casting. In particular, no systematic study has been performed on the microstructural evolution and morphological change of the rutile-phase $TiO_2$ foams during sintering. Therefore, in the present study, several $TiO_2$ foam samples were produced using the freeze-casting technique, which were then sintered at a relatively high temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2, and 4 h to compare the morphological changes in the microstructure and to understand the effects of processing parameters of the rutile-phase $TiO_2$ foams. The foam ligament size increased near linearly with increasing sintering time whereas the average pore size decreased only slightly with increasing sintering time, with changes in particle morphology from sphere to rod and complete phase transformation from anatase to rutile.
In this study, a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres was fabricated using emulsion solvent evaporation technique. During the procedure fabrication, some parameters process have effected on the formation of micro-carriers. The structure and morphology of micro-carriers were evaluated by SEM observation. Beside, heparin incorporated into microspheres was determined using toluidine blue method. Specifically, the effects of some parameters process such as ultrasonic levels, PLGA concentrations and freeze-dry times on the size, structure, porous formation and heparin entrapment of micro-carriers were studied carefully. We found that, the morphology and structure of carriers were influenced by the all above parameters. The diameter of the carriers varied from 20 to 400 ${\mu}M$ depending on experimental conditions. At suitable freeze-dry time, the pores were automatically formation on surface of microspheres with a significantly in the numbers of pore. After heparin incorporated porous PLGA microspheres, it was suggested that the highly heparin incorporated into porous PLGA microspheres could enhance of angiogenesis for tissue regeneration easily.

In this study, we used TIPS (thermally induced phase separation) for the application of water treatment membrane, and observed the change in morphology of separation membrane due to the change of solidification temperature and heat capacity. For manufactured membrane, PVDF and silica with excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance were used, and DOP (dioctyl phthalate), DBP (dibutyl phthalate) were used as the diluent. Using the SEM (scanning electron microscope), the morphology of each different coagulation solutions of heat capacity change was observed. As the heat capacity increased, the crystallization rate of PVDF was decreased and showed large pore. In contrast, It also confirmed that the smaller heat capacity, the faster the crystallization rate and make smaller pores.
Carbon materials were synthesized by pyrolysis from fibers of Corn-straw (Zea mays), Rice-straw (Oryza sativa), Jute-straw (Corchorus capsularis) Bamboo (Bombax bambusa), Bagass (Saccharum officinarum), Cotton (Bombax malabaricum), and Coconut (Cocos nucifera); these materials were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectra. All carbon materials are micro sized with large pores or channel like morphology. The unique complex spongy, porous and channel like structure of Carbon shows a lot of similarity with the original anatomy of the plant fibers used as precursor. Waxy contents like tyloses and pits present on fiber tracheids that were seen in the inherent anatomy disappear after pyrolysis and only the carbon skeleton remained; XRD analysis shows that carbon shows the development of a (002) plane, with the exception of carbon obtained from bamboo, which shows a very crystalline character. Raman studies of all carbon materials showed the presence of G- and D-bands of almost equal intensities, suggesting the presence of graphitic carbon as well as a disordered graphitic structure. Carbon materials possessing lesser density, larger surface area, more graphitic with less of an $sp^3$ carbon contribution, and having pore sizes around $10{\mu}m$ favor hydrogen adsorption. Carbon materials synthesized from bagass meet these requirements most effectively, followed by cotton fiber, which was more effective than the carbon synthesized from the other plant fibers.
Carbon materials of various morphologies were synthesized by pyrolysis of Soap-nut seeds (Sapindus mukorossi), Jack Fruit seeds (Artocarpus heterophyllus), Date-seeds (Phoenix dactylifera), Neem seeds (Azadirachta indica), Tea leaves (Ehretia microphylla), Bamboo stem (Bambusa bambus) and Coconut fiber (Cocos nucifera), without using any catalyst. Carbon materials thus formed were characterized by SEM XRD and Raman. Carbon thus synthesized varied in size (in ${\mu}m$) but all showed highly porous morphology. These carbon materials were utilized as the anode in Lithium secondary battery. Amongst the various precursors, carbon fibers obtained from Soap-nut seeds (Sapindus mukorossi) and Bamboo stem (Bambusa bambus), even after $100^{th}$ cycles, showed the highest capacity of 130.29 mAh/g and 92.74 mAh/g respectively. Morphology, surface areas and porosity of carbon materials obtained from these precursors were analyzed to provide interpretation for their capacity to intercalate lithium. From the Raman studies it is concluded that graphitic nature of carbon materials assist in the intercalation of lithium. Size of cavity (or pore size of channels type structure) present in carbon materials were found to facilitate the intercalation of lithium.
Here, we introduce porous graphene balls (PGB) showing superior electrochemical properties as supercapacitor electrode materials. PGB was fabricated via activation of graphene oxides (GO) by H2O2 and aerosol spray drying in series. Effect of activation on the morphology, specific surface area, pore volume, and electrochemical properties were investigated. As-prepared PGB showed spherical morphology containing pores, which lead to the effective prevention of restacking in graphene sheets. It also exhibited a large surface area, unique porous structures, and high electrical conductivity. The electrochemical properties of the PGB as electrode materials of supercapacitor are investigated by using aqueous KOH under symmetric two-electrode system. The highest specific capacitance of PGB was 279 F/g at 0.1 A/g. In addition, the high rate capability (93.8% retention) and long-term cycling stability (92.2%) of the PGB were found due to the facilitated ion mobility between the porous graphene layers.
For the pervaporation of water-ethanol mixtures, new composite membranes having poly(acrylic acid)-poly (butyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) interpenetrati ng polymer network [PAA-P(BMA-co-MMA) IPN] skin layer supported on porous and crosslinked poly(BMA-co-MMA) were prepared. The morphology of the sub-layer of the composite membrane prepared in the presence of 60 wt% solvent showed cellular structure, on the other hand that of sublayer prepared in the presence of 70 wt% solvent presented very porous interconnected pore structure with macrovoids. Permeation rates of the composite membranes were largely influenced by the morphology of the sublayer. Separation factors increased with the increase of the degree of crosslinking of the PAA network. It was found that permeation rates could be increased by introducing anionic charges on carboxyl groups of the PAA. The permeation rate changes of the PAA-P(BMA-co-MMA) IPN composite membranes according to the feed compositions showed quite similar pattern with the swelling behavior in water-ethanol mixtures.
The morphology of the apical pore complex, the first apical plate and the posterior sulcal plates in a new isolate of Alexandrium tamarense (Lebour) Balech from the Bay of Chinhae was compared with other that of toxic strains of A. tamarense previously isolated from Korean waters. Although this isolate was morphologically identical to these toxic strains, high performance liquid chromatography and mouse bioassay showed no evidence of toxin production. The nontoxic A. tamarense strain showed a strong positive binding activity with PNA lectin, indicating a high density of lactose and galactose residues on the cell surface, and in SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis a unique protein of about 21-kDa molecular sizes was observed. These findings demonstrate that the use of PNA and immunobioassay could be used to discriminate between toxic and nontoxic strains of A. tamarense.
MCM-41 (Mobil Composition of Matter) and SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous) were used as a supported catalyst for ethylene polymerization due to their combination of large surface area and wide range of pore size distribution. The morphology of supports was used to control the morphology of the resulting polymer. Different molar ratios of Al/Ti were used for ethylene polymerization at $60^{\circ}C$ under atmospheric pressure. The effect of different mass ratios of MCM-41/SBA-15 and 1-hexene concentration on polymerization activity and polymer properties was investigated. The catalytic activity and the crystallinity reached the highest value at Al/Ti of 480. Upon incorporation of MCM-41 and SBA-15 into $MgCl_2/TiCl_4$ catalyst, the molecular weight and crystallinity of polyethylene were enhanced. The obtained polyethylene showed melting temperature between 130 and $135^{\circ}C$. The polyethylene with replication structure of support and bimodal MWD was expected.
