  • Thermal and mechanical properties of flexible polyurethane foam modified by urushiol and cardanol which have been known to be antibiotic were investigated. It was observed from FT-IR spectra analysis that the urushiol reacted with isocyanate was participated in synthesis of polyurethane. It was also seen that the modification using urushiol and cardanol made the PU more thermally stable without deterioration of mechanical properties. The modified PU foams showed increased antibacterial properties compared with neat PU foam.

  • Ammonium polyphosphate-polyurethane foam composite (APP-PUF) was prepared from poly(adipate)diol/ammonium polyphosphate composite (f = 2), polyether polyol (f = 4.6), and PMDI (f = 2.5). As a blowing agent, $H_2O$ was used at various concentrations. The thermal decomposition behavior, morphology, closed-cell content, and density of APP-PUF were characterized. At the $H_2O$ concentrations lower than 3.5 php, the cell size of pure polyurethane foams (PUF) and APP-PUFs were close each other. As the $H_2O$ concentration became greater than 5.0 php, the cell size of the PUFs greatly increased compared to that of APP-PUFs. Addition of 1.5~1.9 wt% ammonium polyphosphate to the PUFs greatly enhanced the thermal stability of the PUFs, so 50 wt% residual temperature of APP-PUFs increased to $380{\sim}488^{\circ}C$, which were $30{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ higher than those of the PUFs. Thermal stability of the PUFs and APP-PUFs increased with $H_2O$ content and then decreased once $H_2O$ content exceeded 5 php.

  • This paper deals with the design of a car seat for enhancing dynamic ride quality using a Biomechanical Model that was developed from the measured whole-body vibration characteristic. For evaluation of seat ride quality, the z-axis acceleration of floor as an input of biomechanical model was measured on a driving passenger car at highway and national road. Form the floor signal and the estimated biomechanical model, overall ride value evaluated by parameter study of seat stiffness and damping. The result shows that overall ride value decreases as the seat damping increases and the sear stiffness decreases. A lot of polyurethane foams were manufactured and tried to evaluate dynamic ride quality of a seat. It is found that stiffness and damping of a seat show a linear relationship, which means the stiffness and damping are not independent each other, So the optimal seat parameters within practically achievable space are determined.

  • The material factors influencing the sound absorption of the polyurethane foam were investigated with FT-IR, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA). The measurements were performed using the samples which had a similar cell structure but different absorption coefficients. It was found that the ability of the sound absorption of the polyurethane foams was closely related to the damping behavior over the transition range. In order to confirm the use of the low monol polyol (LMP) in high-performance applications, the polyurethanes based on LMP and polypropylene oxide polyol (PPG) were prepared by the solution polymerization method. The microstructure and the physical properties of these polyurethanes were compared. The PPG-based polyurethane showed a higher level of the phase-separated structure because the considerable amount of monol presented in PPG made a contribution to the increased chain mobility. However the short chains formed due to the monol species deteriorated the damping property. As a result, the LMP-based polyurethane showed the superior damping behavior as compared with the PPG-based one.

  • Flexible polyurethane/clay porous nanocomposite foams were synthesized using natural and organically modified montmorillonite clays such as bentonite, closite 10A and closite 30B. The content of nanoclays was varied from 1 to 5 wt% of polyol. Dispersion of clay in Polyurethane(PU) matrix was investigated by X-ray diffraction(Cu-$K{\alpha}$ rays of wavelength $1.54{\AA}$) using an X-ray diffractometer. Also, we determined that the thermal resistance of PU foam increased with added clay, compared to that of pure PU foam. The cell size and the fraction of open cells of the precursor foam were controlled by the addition of clay to the polyurethane foam. Modified clays were found to be more efficient cell openers than the unmodified clay. In addition, the tensile strength and elongation of the polyurethane/clay porous nanocomposites were examined. Increasing clay content increased the mechanical properties of the composites, such as tensile strength, and elongation at break. However, increasing the content over 5 wt% deteriorated the properties of the composites. We found that the nanofillers(bentonite, closite 10A and closite 30B) improved the thermal stability of the nanocomposite foam. The nanocomposite foam containing 3 wt% of closite 30B exhibited the best tensile strength and thermal stability.

  • The purpose of this study was to establish a numerical model of polyurethane foam (PUF) to simulate the dynamic response and strength of membrane-type Liquefied natural gas (LNG) Cargo containment system (CCS) under the impact load. To do this, initially, the visco-plastic behavior of PUF was characterized by testing the response of the PUF to the impact loads with various strain rates as well as PUF densities at room temperature and at cryogenic conditions. A PUF material model was established using the test results of the material and the FE analysis. To verify the validation of the established material model, simulations were performed for experimental applications, e.g., the dry drop test, and the results of FEA were compared to the experimental results. Based on this comparison, it was found that the dynamic response of PUF in dry drop tests, such as the reaction force and fracture behaviors, could be simulated successfully by the material model proposed in this study.

  • Polyurethane flexible foams have been widely used for automotive seat cushions because of their excellent performance. It has been required so far to reduce the density of seat cushion foam. However, recently, improving the riding comfort of seat cushions becomes more important. With regard to riding comfort, we investigated the improvement of static properties such as the ball rebound property and the hysteresis loss. We also studied the vibration characteristics, which are well known as an important factor to affect the comfort performance during driving.

  • Thermo-mechanical treatment process of a compressed open-cell rigid polyurethane foam (OC-RPUF), which was fabricated for the vacuum insulation panel (VIP), was studied to obtain an optimum condition for the dimensional stability by the relaxation of compressive stress. Thermo-mechanical deformation of the sample OC-RPUF was shown to occur from about $120^{\circ}C$. Yield stress of 0.36 MPa was shown at about 10% yield strain. And, densification of the foam started to occur from 75% compressive strain and could be continued up to max. 90%. Compression set of the sample restored after initial compression to 90% at room temperature was ca. 82%. Though the expansion occurred to about twice of the originally compressed thickness in case of temperature rise to $130^{\circ}C$, it could be overcome and the dimensional stability could be maintained if the constant load of 0.3 MPa was applied. As the result, a thermo-mechanical treatment process, i.e, annealing process at temperature of $130{\sim}140^{\circ}C$ for about 20 min as is the maximum compressed state at room temperature, should be required for dimensional stability as an optimum condition for the use of VIP core material.
