  • Microporous polypropylene hollow fiber membrane was fabricated from isotactic polypropylene-soybean oil system by melt spinning process. Addition of nucleating agent accelerated the crystallization rate and elevated the crystallization temperature. Nucleating agent increased the number of nuclei and spherulites, which offered more inter-spherulitic amorphous sites for stretching. Benzoic acid, adipic acid, and dibenzylidene sorbitol were selected as nucleating agents, and their characteristics and effects were investigated by thermal and optical analyses. Spherulite growth and micropore formation characteristics were correlated with the kind of nucleating agent. Benzoic acid and adipic acid showed the remarkable nucleating effect, while dibenzylidene sorbitol was less effective than those. Nucleating agents also helped the sample have uniform microporous structure. Increase of nucleating agent composition enhanced the nucleation effect to some extent. Nucleating agents played very important roles in enhancing the membrane porosity and water flux.

  • To improve the antifouling characteristics of polypropylene hollow fiber microporous membranes in a submerged membrane-bioreactor for wastewater treatment, the surface-modification was conducted by Ar plasma treatment. Surface hydrophilicity was assessed by water contact angle measurements. The advancing and receding water contact angles reduced after the surface modification, and hysteresis between the advancing and receding water contact angles was enlarged after Ar plasma treatment due to the increased surface roughness after surface plasma treatment. After continuous operation in a submerged membrane-bioreactor for about 55 h, the flux recovery after water cleaning and the flux ratio after fouling were improved by 20.0 and 143.0%, while the reduction of flux was reduced by 28.6% for the surface modified membrane after 1 min Ar plasma treatment, compared to those of the unmodified membrane. Morphological observations showed that the mean membrane pore size after Ar plasma treatment reduced as a result of the deposition of the etched species; after it was used in the submerged membrane-bioreactor, the further decline of the mean membrane pore size was caused by the deposition of foulants. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy confirmed that proteins and polysaccharide-like substances were the main foulants in the precipitate.

  • The artificial lung is a device used to replace the function of the lungs. The major function of the lung is to remove carbon dioxide from the venous blood and replace it with oxygen, or arterialize the blood. And the function of the artificial lung is to provide an adequate amount of oxygenated blood to all the tissues of body during the open heart surgery. Extracorporeal life support(ECLS or ECMO) is standard treatment for severe respiratory failure but poses many contributions to future lung transplantation. Artificial Lung or membrane oxygenators available today, based on microporous polypropylene fibers, are associated with two major problems. They require systemic anticoagulation of the patient and they allow serum leakage across the membrane from the blood side to the gas side during long-term use. We obtained newly fabricated polypropylene(PP)/polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) membranes which combined PP membrane, a microporous support layer with PDMS, and we had investiaged a technique for minimizing serum lekage of polypropylene(PP) membrane. The gas permeability of each PP/PDMS membrane was almost constant before and after the whole blood test by Lee-White method, while that of PP membrane was significantly reduced. Therefore the PP/PDMS membrane could be prevented serum leakage of PP membrane. In addition, the gas permeability of $CO_2$ in PP/PDMS membrane was 11.5 times higher as compared with that of $O_2$.

  • Microporous polypropylene (PP) membranes have the high chemical and corrosion resistance, the good mechanical properties and the thermal stability under high temperatures, but its application is restricted within narrow limits due to hydrophobicity of membranes. In order to impart permanent hydrophilicity to the PP microfiltration membrane, the radiation-induced graft of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and acrylic acid (AAc) containing hydrophilic functional group onto the membrane has been studied. The effect of graft conditions such as reaction time, total radiation dose, reaction temperatures, acid compositions on graft yield was investigated. Modified PP membranes were shown to cause an increase in the gas flux. Oil emulsion permeation flux of both original PP membrane and modified PP membrane was examined.

  • Pore-filled ion-exchange membranes in which polypropylene(PP) microporous membrane was used as a nascent membrane were prepared by an in-situ cross-linking technique. Poly(vinylbenzyl chloride)(PVBCI) reacted with piperazine(PIP) or 1,4-diaminobicyclo[2,2,2]octane(DABCO) in a di-methylforamide(DMF) solution was filled in the pores of the microporous base membrane. After gellation the remaining chloromethyl groups were, then reacted with an amine such as trimethylamine to form positively charged, ammonium site. This will produce the pore-filled anion-exchange membrane. It was shown that this simple 2 step procedure gave dimensionally stable, pore-filled membranes in which the MG of polymer gel and degree of cross-linking could be easily controlled by the concentration of PVBCI and cross-linker in the starting DMF solution. Specially, high water permeability (7.8 kg/$m^2$hr, host membrane: PP3, MG: 73%, degree of cross-linking: 10%, crosslinker: PIP) at ultra low pressure(100 kPa) indicates the produced pore-filled membranes is usable as a water softening membrane.

  • Hybrid process of thermally-induced phase separation and stretching was developed for the preparation of microporous polypropylene hollow fiber membranes. Precursor for stretching was prepared by using soybean oil as a diluent and benzoic acid as a nucleating agent far the sphenlite control and it was stretched far the micrporous hollow fiber membrane. The effects of stretching ratio and deformation rate for stretching process were investigated. Increase of stretching ratio resulted in the greater pore size with nonuniform size distribution. Higher deformation rate also increaser the pore size with uniform size distribution. Stretching ratio was closely related with the orientation of polymer chain and increased the mechanical strength of the fiber. Increase of deformation rate had little effects on the orientation of crystalline phase, and decreased the orientation of amorphous phase which caused the decrease of tensile strength of the fiber and broke the micro-fibrils connecting spherulites to form a circular pore shape.
