  • New semi-fluorinated polyol esters were synthesized by condensation reaction of polyols (NPG and TMP) and carboxylic acids such as 2-ethylhexanoic acid, stearic acid and perfluorooctanoic acid. The structures of polyol esters were confirmed by FT-IR and H-NMR etc. And, the fluorinated polyol esters were insoluble in several oils, however, the semi-fluorinated polyol esters were soluble in several oils depended on the structure of polyol esters. The physical properties such as 4-ball wear property and extreme-pressure (EP) properties were characterized by measuring wear scar diameter through ASTM D2266 and by determining the load-carrying through ASTM D2783 method, respectively. As the results, wear scar diameters of oils in which the semi-fluorinated polyol esters were added were not changed compared to those of not added oils. While extreme-pressure properties remarkably Increased with fluorine contents of the esters depended on the structure of acid moiety and polyol moiety. Also, the extreme-pressure property of semi-fluorinated NPG polyol ester in gasoline engine oil was better than that of commercial Teflon coating additive.

  • Global warming has led to an increase in demand of eco-friendly vehicles, such as electric cars, for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and especially, regulating carbon dioxide generation. In addition, electric vehicles are equipped with an electric drive-type hermetic scroll compressor and a refrigerant, which exhibit current and future trends of using environmentally friendly refrigerants, including R-1234yf. In this study, polyol ester-based refrigeration oils are prepared via condensation esterification of polyol and fatty acids. The oils can be combined with R-1234yf refrigerant for applications in air conditioning and cooling systems of electric vehicles. The structure of synthetic polyol esters is confirmed via 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectrum analysis, and the composition of the polyol ester is analyzed via gas chromatogram analysis. Furthermore, kinematic viscosity, viscosity index, total acid value, pour point, and color are analyzed as fundamental physical properties of the synthetic polyol esters. The compatibility and chemical stability of the synthetic polyol ester combined with the R-1234yf refrigerant are obtained via high temperature and high pressure oil-resistant refrigerant tests. The changes in the oil color and catalyst activity are observed before and after the experiment to determine whether it is suitable as a refrigerator oil.

  • The insecticide constituents of several Celastraceae family plants including Celastrus angulatus, Celastrus orbiculatus, Celastrus flagellaris, Euonymus verrucosides, Euonymus forunei and Euonymus phellomana were studied by bioassay-guided fractionation. All structures of sesquiterpene polyol esters and alkaloids have been elucidated by UV, IR, MS, NMR and x-ray diffraction evidences. These compounds exhibited insecticidal, antifeedant and narcotic activities against Mythimna separata.

  • In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the development of new functional surfactant including new type of anionic surfactants. Anionic surfactants, ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty acids that straight long chain alkyl group having from 12 to 18 carbon atoms, were synthesized with sulfur trioxide-dioxane complex to good yield. Xylitol ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty acid esters were obtained by reaction that the acetification and esterification of xylitol, by addition reaction with sodium chloride and hydrolysis respectively. These compounds were a new group of destructible surfactants which readily hydrolyzed and oxidized in natural water reservoirs. Physical properties of these new compounds involved surface tension, critical micelle concentration(cmc), foaming power, emulsion power, and hydrolysis properties, were measured. The cmc values of the compounds by ring method were assumed to $7.0{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}3.0{\times}10^{-2}mol/{\ell}$ range and surface tensions at cmc were $25{\sim}31dyne/cm$ respectively.

  • This paper deals with refrigerant-oil mixtures in a dehumidifying cycle. Two different oils such as Alkylbenzene(AB) and Polyol-esters(POE) lubricants are used for R134a to investigate the effect of miscibility on oil returnability. It was found that R134a/AB mixture had more unstable interface between oil and refrigerant than R134a/POE mixture. However, overall flow patterns of both refrigerant-oil mixtures were almost same. The minimum height of oil measured in the compressor was as high as twice of the least permissible height of oil in the compressor required to insure its reliability. Thus, it is considered that immiscible oil, i. e., AB for R134a can be used without causing oil returnability problem.

  • The hydrolysis rates of seven kinds of polyol ester base oils 〔POEs〕 of different branch shape were investigated by using a simple apparatus under mild acidic condition. Seven polyol ester base oils were made of poly hydric alcohols of two-four valence, normal or branched fatty acids of different carbon number. p-Toluene sulfonic acid was used as acid catalyst to accelerate the rate of hydrolysis. Partial esters and fatty acid produced by sequential hydrolysis of POEs were identified and their concentrations were determined by calibrated-internal standard method using Gas Chromatography. The rate constants of each step in sequential hydrolysis were determined by the least square method from rate equation and the concentration of each component, were compared with one another. It was shown that the rate of hydrolysis of POEs was strongly affected by whether molecular structure of fatty acid was straight chain or branch chain and which position was branched. The hydrolysis stability for all the POEs can be reasonably explained by using a steric hindrance effect anticipated fi:om their molecular structures affecting as water molecule makes an attack on the carbonyl carbon of POEs.

  • Environmentally adapted synthetic base oils of polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) and polyol esters (POEs) show a high polarity because of their functional groups containing oxygen atom. The lubricating performance of these polar base oils was investigated by using a four-ball tribometer under boundary lubrication condition. Four polyalkylene glycols and five polyol ester base oils were used as sample base oils of high polarity. A mineral oil (MO) and alkylnaphthalene (AN) were used as low polarity base oils. Tricrecylphosphate (TCP) was added to all the base oils, in the range of 10 mmol/L-2000 mmol/L, as an antiwear additive. All the TCP-for-mutated base oils showed optimum concentration characteristics for minimizing wear. The order of optimum concentration of all the base oils was in a good accordance with the order of relative stability of TCP in base oils. The interaction model on solvation between additive and different polar base oils can expect the stability order of TCP. Thus, the model on solvation can explain well the order of optimum concentration of all the base oils, by using the effect of polarity (dielectric constant, $\varepsilon$) and molecular size (molecular weight, MW) of them on stability of TCP in polar base oils. Finally, a good correlation of the optimum concentration for all the base oils was obtained when it was arranged as a function of C∝(M $W_{Base Oil}$/M $W_{TCP}$)$^{-2}$.71/.($\varepsilon$$_{Base Oil}$)$^{3.38}$ by these two parameters.s..
