  • This study was investigated the thermal properties of underfill with various epoxy resins using thermal analysis methods such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo gravimetry analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA). And, the adhesion strength of the underfills/FR-4 substrate was evaluated. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of underfill which was composed the cycolaliphatic epoxy resin was lower than that of underfill which was not composed the cycolaliphatic epoxy resin. The thermal degradation of underfill was composed of two processes, which involved chemical reactions between the degrading polymer and oxygen from the air atmosphere. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of underfill which was composed the cycolaliphatic epoxy resin was higher than that of underfill which was not composed the cycolaliphatic epoxy resin. The excessive curing temperatures caused a weak boundary layer of epoxy resin, which resulted in a deterioration of mechanical properties in the epoxy resin and thus led to poor adhesion property between the underfill/FR-4 substrate.

  • We fabricated highly transparent and flexible Ti doped In2O3 (TIO)/Ag nanowire(NW)/TIO (TAT) multilayer electrodes by linear facing target sputtering (LFTS) and brush-painting for used as flexible for anode organic solar cells(FOSCs). The characteristics of TAT transparent anode as a function of number of brush-painting cycles was also investigated. At optimized conditions we achieved highly flexible TAT multilayer electrodes with a low sheet resistance of $9.01{\Omega}/square$ and a high diffusive transmittance more than 80% in visible region as well as superior mechanical stability. The effective embedment of the Ag NW network between top and bottom TIO films led to a metallic conductivity, high transparency. Based on FE-SEM HRTEM, and XRD analysis, we can find that the Ag NW network was effectively embedded between top and bottom TIO layers due to good flexibility of Ag NW, the TAT multilayer showed superior flexibility than single TIO layer. Successful operation of FOSCs with high power conversion efficiency of 3.01% indicates that TAT hybrid electrode is a promising alternative to conventional ITO electrode for high performance FOSCs.

  • Translucent alumina is a potential candidate for high temperature application as a replacement of the glass or polymer. Recently, due to the increasing demand of high power light emitting diode (LED), there is a growing interest in the translucent alumina. Since the translucent property is very sensitive to the internal defect, such as voids inside or abnormal grain growth of sintered alumina, it is important to fabricate the defect-free product through the fabrication process. Powder injection molding (PIM) has been commonly applied for the fabrication of complex shaped products. Among the many parameters of PIM, the flowability of powder/binder mixture becomes more significant especially for the shape of the cavity with thin thickness. Two different positions of the gate were applied during PIM using the disc type of die. The binder was removed by solvent extraction method and the brown compact was sintered at $1750^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours in a vacuum. The flowability was also simulated using moldflow (MPI 6.0) with two different types of gate. The effect of the flowability of powder/binder mixture on the microstructure of the sintered specimen was studied with the analysis of the simulation result.

  • Glass-like carbon precursors shrink significantly during curing and carbonization, which leads to crack formation and bending. Cured furan resin powder and ethanol were added to furan resin to diminish the weight loss, to suppress the shrinkage and bending, and to readily release the gases evolved during polymerization and curing. Curing and carbonization were controlled by pressure and slow heating to avoid damage to the samples. The effect of the filler and ethanol on the fabrication process was examined by measuring the properties of the glass-like carbon, such as the specific gravity, bending strength, electrical resistivity, and microstructural change. The specific gravities of the filler-added glass-like carbons were higher than those of the ethanol-added samples because of the formation of macropores from the vaporization of ethanol during the curing and polymerization processes. Although the ethanol-added glass-like carbons exhibited lower bending strengths after carbonization than did the filler-added samples, the opposite result was observed after aging at 2,600$^{\circ}C$. We found that the macropores created from ethanol were contracted and removed upon heat treatment. The electrical resistivity of the glass-like carbon aged at 2,600$^{\circ}C$ was lower than those of the samples carbonized at 1,000$^{\circ}C$. We attribute this phenomenon to the fact that aging at high temperature led to well-developed microstructures, the removal of macropores, and the reduction of the surface area.

  • This study reports a synthesis of an amphiphilic linear block copolymer consisting of a hydrophobic poly (lactide) (PLA) block and a hydrophilic hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) block, PLA-b-hbPG. Simple chemical modification of the hbPG block with 4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CA) led to a photo-crosslinkable block copolymer, PLA-b-hbPG-CA. Nanosized micelles of the block copolyemrs were used as drug carriers for sustainable release. The hbPG shell made of a small molecular weight hbPG block showed excellent hydrophilicity, which can minimize in vivo toxicity. The UV-crosslinked PLA-b-hbPG-CA micelles loaded with drugs colud be served as a drug delivery carrier for its biocompatibility and self-assembled structures.

  • Chitosan is normally acylated and subsequently conjugated with drugs for biomedical applications. This study examined the relationship between the succinylation and gelation behaviors of glycol chitosan. Glycol chitosan was acylated with succinic anhydride under a wide variety of reaction conditions, such as different molar ratios of succinic anhydride to glucosamine, different methanol content in the reaction media, and different reaction temperatures. Among these reaction parameters, the methanol content in the solvent played an important role in determining the regioseletive succinylating site. N-succinylation and N-N cross-linking occurred regardless of the reaction conditions. However, O-succinylation was observed under specific conditions, i.e. a methanol content> 0.6 (v/v) and a reaction temperature> $25^{\circ}C$. O-succinylation accelerated the N-O cross-linking of glycol chitosan, and led to gelation. The N-succinylated glycol chitosans were water-soluble, whereas the N-and O-succinylated glycol chitosans fonned a gel. These physico-chemical structural differences in the succinylated glycol chitosans would definitely influence subsequent drug-conjugation reactions and consequently the drug loading and release kinetics.

  • Living nature of photoinduced cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) in the presence of various combinations of diphenyliodonium halide (DPIX), a photocationic initiator and zinc halide $(ZnX_2)$ in methylene chloride has been investigated. Attainment of $100\%$ conversion and a linear relationship between $\%$conversion and number average molar mass of the resulting polymer, strongly suggests the living nature of this system. Livingness of the polymerization system was observed irrespective to the type of halide anion of the initiator and zinc salts unless the reaction temperature is not higher than $-30^{\circ}C$. The rate of polymerization decreases in the order of iodide > bromide > chloride when halide salt of DPIX and $ZnX_2$ are used. It is postulated that the cationic initiation is started by the insertion of weakly basic monomer in to the activated C-X terminal of the monomer adduct which is a reaction product of monomer and HX, a photolytic product of DPIX, formed in situ during the photo-irradiation process. It was concluded that polymerization is initiated by the insertion of weakly basic monomer into activated C- X terminal of monomer adduct due to the pulling action of$ZnX_2$, which successively producing a new polarized C-X terminal for the propagation in cationic nature. This led us to a conclusion that the living nature of this cationic polymerization is ascribable to the polarized C-X growing terminal, which is stable enough to depress the processes of chain transfer or termination process.

  • Photochemical modulation of Bragg-reflection wavelengths based on isomerization of an azobenzene (Azo) and subsequent change in reflectance was investigated in cholesteric liquid crystals (ChLCs) which reflect light in visible wavelength region. Irradiation at 366 nm, which causes an efficient transcis isomerization of Azo, led to change in reflected color of ChLCs toward shorter wavelengths with a concomitant lowering of phase transition. Reversible change in color was induced all-optically by alternate irradiation at effective wavelengths for reversible isomerization of Azo. A considerable variation in reflectance was also observed when the photoinduced change in color was measured by a probe light with the same handedness as the ChLCs. The spectral Position of selective light reflection in the initial states played an important role to produce a normal-mode and a reverse-mode switching in photoinduced modulation of reflectance of the ChLCs with respect to the probe light.

  • Biodegradable and elastic poly(L-lactide-co-$\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PLCL) was electrospun to prepare nanofibers, and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) was then grafted onto their surfaces under aqueous conditions using $^{60}Co-{\gamma}$ irradiation. The graft yield increased with increasing irradiation dose from 5 to 10 kGy and the nanofibers showed a greater graft yield compared with the firms. SEM confirmed that the PLCL nanofibers maintained an interconnected pore structure after grafting with NIPAAm. However, overdoses of irradiation led to the excessive formation of homopolymer gels on the surface of thc PLCL nanofibers. The equilibrium swelling and deswelling ratio of the PNIPAAm-g-PLCL nanofibers (prepared with 10 kGy) was the highest among the samples, which was consistent with the graft yield results. The phase-separation characteristics of PNIPAAm in aqueous conditions conferred a unique temperature-responsive swelling behavior of PNIPAAm-g-PLCL nanofibers, showing the ability to absorb a large amount of water at < $32^{\circ}C$, and abrupt collapse when the temperature was increased to $40^{\circ}C$. In accordance with the temperature-dependent changes in swelling behavior, the release rate of indomethacin and FITC-BSA loaded in PNIPAAm-g-PLCL nanofibers by a diffusion-mediated process was regulated by the change in temperature. Both model drugs demonstrated greater release rate at $40^{\circ}C$ relative to that at $25^{\circ}C$. This approach of the temperature-controlled release of drugs from PNIPAAm-g-PLCL nanofibers using gamma-ray irradiation may be used to design drugs and protein delivery carriers in various biomedical applications.

  • The paper recycling becomes more important technology in terms of the reduction of the municipal waste and of saving natural resource such as wood. However the more utilization of recycled fiber would result in the higher contaminants in the papermaking processes and in the deterioration of the paper quality. The oil marks in the paper products becomes one of the major defects of paper products originated from paper recycling. The coagulation of various stickies in recycled fiber stock led to the oil marks. In this work, we applied functional polymer additives such as the dispersing agents, the fixing agents and the hydrophobic talc powder for the control of those stickies in order to remove the oil marks. The addition of the talc powder showed the great reduction in the oil marks of the packaging paper products. The hydrophobic surface of the talc particles collected the individual sticky materials and prevented their aggregation in the recycled fiber stock, which resulted in the great reduction of the oil marks on the paper products.
