  • The granulation equipment of concentrated wastes is manufactured for the polymer solidification of concentrated wastes. It uses liquid sodium silicate as a granulating agent for the granulating of dried powder containing boric acid. The granulating agent is sprayed in the form of droplet and mean size of dried granules is $2{\sim}4mm$. The new technology which has been used for the polymer solidification of spent resin in U.S. and certified by Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is successfully applied to concentrated wastes. This uses in-situ solidification process within drum without mechanical mixing. Maximum loading of waste can be achieved without increasing of waste volume. Polymer waste forms were evaluated with several test such as fire test, compressive strength test, leaching test, immersion test, irradiation test, and thermal cycling test according to standard test procedures.

  • In this work, the effect of the hydrophobicity of acrylic polymers on the membrane morphology was investigated. The membranes were prepared with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA), poly (butyl methacrylate) (PBMA), poly(isobutyl methacrylate), and their blends using the wet phase inversion method. PMMA and PEMA having a relatively less hydrophobicity formed the channel-like structure, whereas PBMA and PIBMA having more hydrophobic units formed the finger-like structure. These morphological changes were attributed to differences in the solidification process of the polymer-rich phase determine d by the polymer/solvent/nonsolvent ternary phase diagram. The membrane structures of the blends were controlled by the main component of their blends.

  • Polymeric materials in addition to Portland cement and hydrated limes were used to solidify heavy metal contaminated tailings from five abandoned metal mines in Korea. Mine tailings were mixed separately with Portland cement and hydrated lime at a concentration of 20-30 wt% and 6-9 wt%, respectively and Ethylene Vinyl Acetate(EVA) powder was added to each specimen at a ratio of 2.5 and 5.0 wt% to binders. Polymer-added and polymer-free solidified forms were evaluated for their appropriateness in accordance with the suggested test methods. Regardless of addition of polymeric materials, all solidified forms satisfy the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS) requirements(0.35MPa) for land reclamation and show remarkably reduced leaching concentrations of heavy metals such as As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn less than the toxicity criteria of Korean standard leaching test(KSLT). The addition of polymeric materials increased the UCS of solidified forms to improve a long-term stability of solidified mine tailings.

  • The solid state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) employing polymer electrolytes show high overall energy conversion efficiency as high as 4.5 % at 1 sun conditions. The improved efficiency may be primarily due to the enlarged interfacial contact area between the electrolyte and dyes in addition to the increased ionic conductivity, which were done by utilizing liquid oligomers, followed by in situ self-solidification, to form the solid DSSCs: "Oligomer Approach". The effect of the charge transfer resistance at the counter electrode side on the efficiency has also been investigated.

  • Wet masterbatch (WMB) technology is studied to develop high-content and highly disperse silica-filled compounds. This technology refers to the solidification of surface-modified silica with a rubber solution or latex. Until now, researchs based on styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)/silica WMB has been mainly performed. However, the blending of SBR/silica WMB and BR is not known and is currently under research and development. Therefore, in this study, the BR blending method suitable for emulsion (ESBR)/silica WMB is investigated by measuring their cure characteristics and the mechanical and dynamic viscoelastic properties. As a result, it was confirmed that the blending of ESBR/silica WMB and BR/silica dry masterbatch is most appropriate. However, it showed a disadvantage compared with the conventional mixing method, which was due to the surfactant remained and the sulfuric acid used as the coagulant.

  • Size control of therapeutic carriers in drug delivery systems has become important due to its relevance to biodistribution in the human body and therapeutic efficacy. To understand the dependence of particle size on the formation condition during nanoprecipitation method, we prepared nanoparticles from biodegradable, amphiphilic block copolymers and investigated the particle size and structure of the resultant nanoparticles according to various process parameters. We synthesized monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) block copolymer, MPEG-PCL, with different MPEG/PCL ratios via ring opening polymerization initiated from the hydroxyl end group of MPEG. Using various formulations with systematic change of the block ratio of MPEG and PCL, solvent choice, and concentration of organic phase, MPEG-PCL nanoparticles were prepared through nanoprecipitation technique. The results indicated that (i) the nanoparticles have a dual structure with an MPEG shell and a PCL core, originating from self-assembly of MPEG-PCL copolymer in aqueous condition, and (ii) the size of nanoparticles is dependent upon two sequential processes: diffusion between the organic and aqueous phases and solidification of the polymer.

  • The efforts to reduce carbon emission have been made in many aspects and in road, the study to develop the construction method which will replace asphalt and cement is also underway. But given the low cost and high performance offered by cement, among many solidification agents, it's difficult to seek the competent alternative. Polymeric material has been used in various ways for its advantages including lightweight and easy process for complex function and generates less carbon emission, and thus it would possibly be efficient if it replaces soil pavement using cement. This study, using three different types of organic polymeric solidification agents with different solidification principle, is intended to identify the difference in strength depending on curing method, natural dry or oven dry. Applicability of organic polymeric solidification agents to walkway and bike lane was investigated and as a result of unconfined strength test, all of them satisfied the minimum strength requirements of bike lane. Furthermore, strength characteristics of soil pavement depending on variation of water content was evaluated to identify the relationship, thereby appropriate curing method using organic polymeric solidification agent is proposed.
