  • Poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers were modified by deep UV irradiation which was produced by a low pressure mercury lamp. FT-IR and XPS analyses were used to elucidate the surface chemical composition of PET fibers treated with UV. Relative $O_{1s}$ intensity increased considerably and it was found that oxygen was incorporated in the form of COO on the fiber surface. FT-IR and XPS analyses proved the existence of carboxylic groups on the surfaces and the adsorption test of cationic compound further supported these results. The concentration of carboxylic acid group on the surface increased remarkably with Increasing irradiation time. XPS analysis and adsorption experiments proved that the surface structure of the UV-irradiated PET fibers were stable for 12 months. Antibacterial property and the deodorization rate of UV-irradiated PET fibers adsorbed with the berberine compound were investigated. Reduction rates of bacteria increased by about 21 to 99% compared to unradiated PET fiber. Deodorization rates of 23% for unradiated PET fiber increased to about 75% for 30 min irradiated samples.s.

  • The effect of anodic oxidation on high strength PAN-based carbon fibers has been studied in terms of surface functionality and surface energetics of the fiber surfaces, resulting in improving the mechanical properties of composites. According to FT-IR and XPS measurements, it reveals that the oxygen functional groups on fiber surfaces induced by an anodic oxidation largely influence the surface energetics of fibers or the mechanical interfacial properties of composites, such as the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of composites. According to the contact angle measurements based on the wicking rate of a test liquid, it is observed that anodic oxidation does lead to an increase in surface free energy of the carbon fibers, mainly due to the increase of its specific (or polar) component. From the surface energetic point of view, it is found that good wetting plays an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces between fiber and epoxy resin matrix of the resulting composites. Also, a direct linear relationship is shown between 01s/01s ratio and ILSS or between specific component and ILSS of the composites for this system.

  • The electrolytic plating of a metallic nickel on carbon fiber surfaces was carried out to improve mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites. The surface characteristics of carbon fibers and the mechanical interfacial properties of final composites were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), respectively. It was found that the electrolytic Ni-plating conditions significantly affected the degree of adhesion at interfaces between carbon fibers and epoxy resin matrix in a composite system. Especially, the increase of O,$_{1s}$/$C_{1s}$ ratio, production of NiO groups, and formation of metallic nickel on the nickel-plated carbon fiber surfaces led to an increase of the ILSS of the composites. Also, the ILSS of the composites was greatly correlated with the $O_{1s}$/$C_{1s}$ ratio of the carbon fibers treated in this work.is work.

  • This study aimed to investigate the engineering properties and mechanical behaviors of polymer-fibers treated sand. Para rubber (PR), natural fiber (NF), and geosynthetic fiber (GF) were used to reinforce poorly graded sand. A series of unconfined compressive and splitting tensile strength tests were performed to analyze the engineering behaviors and strength enhancement mechanism. The experiment results indicated that the PR-fibers mixture could firmly enhance the strength properties of sand. The stress-strain characteristics and failure patterns have been changed due to the increase of PR and fibers content. The presence of PR and fibers strengthened the sand and enhanced the stiffness and ductility behavior of the mixture. The stiffness of reinforced sand reaches an optimum state when both NF and GF are 0.5%, while the optimum PR contents are 20% and 22.5% for the mixture with NF and GF, respectively. An addition of PR and fiber into sand contributed to increasing interlocking zone and bonding of PR-sand interfacial.

  • In this study, 3D Meso-scale finite-element model is presented to study the mechanical behavior of steel microfiber-reinforced polymer concrete considering the random distribution of fibers in the matrix. The composite comprises two separate parts which are the polymer composite and steel microfibers. The polymer composite is assumed to be homogeneous, which its mechanical properties are measured by performing experimental tests. The steel microfiber-polymer bonding is simulated with the Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) to offer more-realistic assumptions. The CZM parameters are obtained by calibrating the numerical model using the results of the experimental pullout tests on an individual microfiber. The accuracy of the results is validated by comparing the obtained results with the corresponding values attained from testing the steel microfiber-reinforced polymer concrete incorporating 0, 1 and 2% by volume of microfibers, which indicates the excellent accuracy of the current proposed model. The results show that the microfiber aspect ratio has a considerable effect on the mechanical properties of the reinforced polymer concrete. Applying microfibers with a higher aspect ratio improves the mechanical properties of the composite considerably especially when the first crack appears in the polymer concrete specimens.

• Polyurethane wastes can be depolymerized with glycols and/or amines. The depolymerization products may be recycled for the preparation of various polyurethanes. Caprolactam was employed to depolymerize Spandex fibers and the depolymerization products were evaluated as raw materials for the preparation of polyurethane elastomers. The depolymerization products were homogeneous and could be used to prepare polyurethane elastomers acceptable for various applications as binders.

  • Petrochemicals contain a wide variety of monomers and their derivatives which are used in the production of plastics, fibers and synthetic rubber. Until now, petrochemicals have had a dramatic impact on our food, clothing, shelter and leisure because they are the least expensive, most readily available, and can be processed most easily into the end use products. Petrochemical industry, which is known as one of the typical cycle profitability businesses, is now moving downward. In order to overcome the anticipated loss of profit, petrochemical companies are making an effort to offer a value-added upgrading to conventional products. This lecture will discuss a few of issues on the current status and prospect of petrochemical industry.
