Co-based alloy thin films ddeposited by fcing targets sputtering(FTS) were investigated for use in high-density magnetic recording media to determine how their magnetic properties are dependent on the sputtering conditions, and thus to find appropriate parameters that allow the sputtering and thin films to meet the specificiations for magnetic properties. FTS can discharge at lower working gas pressure than other sputtering methods such as dcmagnetron sputteing because the plasma is sufficiently confined by a magnetic field applied perpendicular to both of the target planes, which results in plasma-free substrates. Co-Cr-Ta films were deposited by FTS on glass and silicon substrates at substrate temperature between room temperature and $350^{\circ}C$, and at argon gas pressure between 0.1 and 10mTorr. The films were also deposited on polyimide tapes at substrate temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ and argon gas pressure of 1 mTorr. The effective advantages of Ta as an additional element were investigated, using the same films on the tapes. As a result of the experiment, it was found that better magnetic properties were obtained in the ranges of higher temperature and lower argon gas pressure with background pressure in thr range of $1.5 \times 10^{-6}$ Torr. Ta addition at 2 to 4 atomic percent almost havled the Co-Cr grain sizes, indicating that Ta addition at an appropriate atomic percent is effective for improving the microstructure and characteristics of Co-Cr films.

In recent years, mica has been successfully used as a substrate for the growth of flexible epitaxial ferroelectric oxide thin films. Here, we systematically investigated the flexibility of mica in terms of its thickness, repeated bending/unbending, extremely hot/cold conditions, and successive thermal cycling. A $20-{\mu}m-thick$ sheet of mica is flexible even up to the bending radius of 5 mm, and it is durable for 20,000 cycles of up- and down-bending. In addition, the mica shows flexibility at 10 and 773 K, and thermal cycling stability for the temperature variation of ca. 400 K. Compared with the widely used flexible polyimide, mica has a significantly higher Young's modulus (ca. 5.4 GPa) and negligible hysteresis in the force-displacement curve. These results show that mica should be a suitable substrate for piezoelectric energy-harvesting applications of ferroelectric oxide thin films at extremely low and high temperatures.

A small electronic nose (E-Nose) system has been developed using an 8-channel vapor detection array and personal digital assistant (PDA). The sensor array chip, integrated on a single microheater-embedded polyimide substrate, was made of carbon black-polymer composites with different kinds of polymers and plasticizers. We have successfully classified various volatile organic compounds such as methanol, ethanol, i-propanol, benzene, toluene, n-hexane, n-heptane, and c-hexane with the aid of the sensor array chip, and have evaluated the resolution factors among them, quantitatively. To achieve a PDA-based E-Nose system, we have also elaborated small sensor-interrogating circuits, simple vapor delivery components, and data acquisition and processing programs. As preliminary results show, the miniaturized E-Nose system has demonstrated the identification of essential oils extracted from mint, lavender, and eucalyptus plants.
We used Brewster's Law to examine the mechanism of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on an organic insulation layer when subjected to ion-beam irradiation. Brewster's Law implies that the maximum rate polarized ray on a slanted insulation layers on the substrate and it illustrates the dependence of polarization and themechanical structure on the ion beam irradiation process. The pretilt angle of nematic LCs on the organic insulation surface was about $1.13^{\circ}$ for an ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 minute at 1800eV. This shows the dependence of LC alignment on the polarization ratio in a slanted organic insulation layer.
We examined the effect of electrode fingers and gaps of coplanar interdigitated electrode (IDE) structures to characterize the ammonium salt-containing polyelectrolyte film of resistance-based humidity sensors. IDEs designed for this purpose were flexible gold electrodes deposited on a polyimide substrate using a printing process because the geometry presents a potential for tunable sensitivity over other electrode designs. The basic design of the sensors consisted of IDEs with a different number of electrode fingers such as 3, 4, and 5 and gap sizes of 310, 360, 410, and $460{\mu}m$. Details of the AC complex impedance characteristics such as the Nyquist plot, Bode plot, and activation energy based on electrode construction were investigated.
Solder bumps have been used to interconnect the chip and substrate, and the size of the solder bump decreases below $100{\mu}m$ to accommodate higher packaging density. In order to fabricate solder bumps, a mold to chip transfer process is suggested in this work. Since the thin stainless steel mold is not wet by the solder, the molten solder is forced to fill the mold cavities with ultrasonic vibration. The solders within the mold cavities are transferred to the Cu pads on the polyimide film through reflow soldering.

Pentacene thin film transistors (OTFTs) on flexible polyimide substrate using electroplated gate electrode and organic/high-k inorganic bilayer gate dielectric layer. Incorporation of thin atomic-layer deposited $HfO_2$ layer on the PVP organic gate dielectric layer reduced the gate leakage and as a result enhanced the current on/off ratio.

We have developed self-aligned imprint lithography (SAIL) technology, an innovative method for roll-to-roll (R2R) fabrication of electronic devices on flexible plastic substrates. In this paper, we present the first R2R-produced ${\alpha}$-Si TFTs built on a polyimide substrate using the SAIL process, and prove the feasibility of this technology to enable R2R fabrication of flexible display active matrix (AM) backplanes with high precision and throughput.
Applying dual layer insulator on plastic substrates improved electrical characteristics of organic thin film transistor(TFT). A high-quality silicon dioxide(SiO$_2$) suitable for a insulator was deposited on plastic substrates by e-beam evaporation at 110$^{\circ}C$. The insulator film which was treated by N$_2$ annealing at 150$^{\circ}C$ showed excellent I-V, C-V characteristics. The dual layer insulator structure of polyimide-SiO$_2$ improved the roughness of SiO$_2$ surface and showed very low leakage current. In addition, the flat band voltage has been reduced from -2.5V to about 0.5V.
We have built a spherically focused, not using acoustic mirrors, capacitive micromachined air-coupled ultrasonic transducer. A flexible backplate of a copper/polyimide backplate is used, permitting it to conform to a spherically shaped substrate. The backplate is patterned with $40-{\mu}m$ depressions having $80-{\mu}m$ center-to-center spacing. A $6-{\mu}m$ thick aluminized Mylar film completing the transducer is deformed to allow it to conform to the spherical backplate. The device's frequency spectrum is centered at 805kHz with -6dB points at 440 and 1210kHz.
