An Experimental Study on Performance in Elevation of Porous Polymer Concrete (투수성 폴리머 콘크리트의 성능 향상에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to ascertain the void ratio, permeability coefficient and compressive strength of porous polymer concretes with unsaturated polyester. The porous polymer concretes using unsaturated polyester with polymer binder contents of 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and 5.5% are prepared, and tested for void ratio, permeability coefficient and compressive strength. As a result, void ratio and permeability coefficient of porous polymer concrete decrease with increasing polymer binder content. However, the compressive strength of porous polymer concrete increase with increasing polymer binder content. The compressive strength of porous polymer concrete decrease with increasing permeability coefficient.

  • Alkali soluble and photo-curable polyesters were prepared from fluorene epoxy acrylate and various aromatic dianhydrides. To make a black matrix for LCD color-filter application, photo-resist solution was made by mixing synthesized polyester as binder, carbon black as pigment, initiator and multifunctional monomer in solvent. Black matrix pattern was formed on the glass substrate by lithography process. In this study, we synthesized various polyester-based binder polymers for LCD color-filter applications, and compared the analytical properties of those polymers and lithography patterns.

Strength Properties of MMA-Modified Unsaturated Polyester Mortar (MMA 개질 불포화 폴리에스터 모르타르의 강도 특성)

  • In this study, methyl methacrylate (MMA)- modified unsaturated polyester mortar, in which the MMA was added to the unsaturated polyester resin, was developed for improving the early-age strength and the workability of the conventional polymer concrete, binder of which was the unsaturated polyester resin. Then the strength properties of the MMA-modified unsaturated polyester mortar were surveyed. The experimental results showed that early-age strength was greater when the MMA contents were increased in the range of $20{\sim}40%$, but the strength rather showed a tendency of decrease when the MMA contents was 50%.

Development of Elastic Composites Using Waste Tire Chip and Epoxy Resin - Focused on Strength and Durability - (폐타이어 칩 및 에폭시를 활용한 탄성 복합체의 개발 - 강도와 내구성을 중심으로 -)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the strength and durability properties of modified epoxy composites with waste tire chip, recycled coarse aggregate, filler and modified epoxy to improve elongation and elasticity of epoxy. Additionally, for comparing to modified epoxy and unsaturated polyester resin as a binder, unsaturated polyester resin composites were developed in the same condition. The mix proportions were determined to satisfy the requirement for the workability and slump according to aggregate size and binder content. Tests for the compressive and flexural strength, freezing and thawing and durability for 20 % sulfuric solution were performed. The compressive and flexural strength of modified epoxy composites were in the range of 34.9~61.6 MPa and 10.2~18.3 MPa at the curing 7 days, respectively. Also, the compressive and flexural strength of unsaturated polyester resin composites were in the range of 44.2~77.8 MPa and 11.3~20.8 MPa at the curing 7 days, respectively. After 300 cycles of freezing and thawing, weight decrease ratio and durability factor of modified epoxy composites were in the range of 0.8~1.9 % and 95~98, respectively. Accordingly, modified epoxy composites will greatly improve the durability of concrete.

  • Polymethyl Methacrylate(PMMA) mortars using EPS solution-based binders are prepared with various unsaturated polyester resin(UP) contents of binder, and tested for working life. heat exothorm temperature, length change. compressive strength and temperature dependence of compressive strength. As a result, the working life of PMMA mortar is lengthened with raising UP content of binder. Length change of the mortar was condensed from expansion to shrinkage with increasing UP content, and non shrinkage of the mortar is obtained at about UP content of $2.5\%$. The compressive strength of the mortar is increased with an increase in the UP content and reach maximum at UP content of $5\%$. However thermal resistance improvement of the mortar by increasing UP content was not recognized. UP resin was recommended as an effective agent for shrinkage control and strength development of PMMA mortar.

Effects of Temperature and Binder Components on Working Life of Fresh MMA Modified UP Polymer Concrete (굳지 않은 MMA개질 UP 폴리머 콘크리트의 사용가능시간에 미치는 온도와 결합재의 영향)

  • PURPOSES : This study deals with the working life of polymer concrete, which is typically used as a repair or overlay material for portland cement concrete pavements. METHODS : In the scope of this study, laboratory testing was conducted on fresh MMA modified UP polymer concrete, which uses an MMA monomer for viscosity adjustment and strength improvement of UP resin. The experimental variables were temperature (-20 to $+20^{\circ}C$) and binder components (MMA, MEKPO, and DMA). RESULTS : The result showed that the optimum binder ratios for polymer concrete production were 12, 11, and 10 wt.% when the MMA contents were 20, 30, and 40 wt.%, respectively. The working life of polymer concrete depending on temperature and binder components could be expressed by a logarithmic functional formula. The coefficient of variation for each binder component was the highest for DMA content while the lowest for MEKPO content. Also, the contents of each binder component for ensuring the working life of 60 minutes were proposed. CONCLUSIONS : Ultimately, the present study derived a linear regression equation estimating 60 minutes working life based on the setting times of each binder component.

Adhesion Properties of Polymer Composite Materials for Concrete Repair (콘크리트 보수용 폴리머 복합재료의 접착강도 특성)

  • This research was conducted to evaluate the adhesion in tension of the polymer mortars for cement concrete repair. Various polymer types, binder ratios, and wet/dry conditions of the surface were considered in this study. Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and ethylen vinyl acetate (EVA) used for polymer cement mortars. Epoxy resin (EP), and unsaturated polyester resin (UP) were used for polymer mertars. Adhesion in tension for the dry condition of the substrate surface was higher than that for the wet condition of the substrate surface under the same binder ratio. Therefore, in repairing concrete, the dry surface condition was effective on adhesion.

  • This study is focused on the proper mixture design of materials for the porous concrete with unsaturated polyester resin. The materials used in the mixture include the single-grade aggregates, unsaturated polyester resin as binder, and calcium carbonate as a filler. An experimental procedure has been carried out to select the best combination of the materials that satisfy both the required permeability and compressive strength. Various kinds of gravel size, the ratio of binder, and F/B ratios are tried to get proper mixture, and the permeability coefficient and compressive strength have been measured to find out the best combination of materials based on the proper Korean Standards. A promix design satisfied the standards of rainfall runoff reduction system with $3.5{\times}10^{-1}$ (cm/sec) of permeability, 34 % of porosity, 11 MPa of compressive strength can be obtained.

  • Recently, polymer-clay hybrid materials have received considerable attention from both a fundamental research and application point of view. This organ-inorganic hybrid, which contains a nanoscale dispersion of the layered silicates, is a material with greatly improved thermal and mechanical characteristics. Two classes of nanocomposites were synthesized using an unsaturated polyester resin as the matrix and sodium montmorillonite as well as an organically modified montmorillonite as the reinforcing agents. X -ray diffraction pattern of the composites showed that the interlayer spacing of the modified montmorillonite were exfoliated in polymer matrix. The mechanical properties also supported these findings, since in general, tensile strength, modulus with modified montmorillonite were higher than the corresponding properties of the composites with unmodified montmorillonite. Adding organically modified clay improved the tensile strength of unsaturated polyester by $22\%$ and the tensile modulus of unsaturated polyester was also improved by $34\%$.
