  • Solution chemistry, sorbate chemistry, and sorbent chemistry were widely investigated to find important factors that affect PAH sorption on mineral surfaces and to elucidate its microscopic mechanism. The solution chemistry, pH and ionic strength caused measurable change of HOC sorption reaction to minerals. The detectable change of Ka occurred at a pH region crossing the PZC (Point of Zero Charge) of each mineral. The PAH hydrophobicity, one of sorbate chemistry, was observed to have a strong correlation with PAM sorption to mineral. Mineral surface area was not found to be a predominant factor controlling PAH sorption. The mineral type might be more likely to play a crucial role in controlling the PAH sorption behavior. The CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity) of mineral, representing surface charge density, has meaningful correlation with regression slope of sorption coefficients (log $K_{d}$) versus aqueous activity coefficients (log Υ$_{w}$).).).

  • A gas chromatographic oil fingerprinting method is a technique used for comparative source identification of spilled oil. The hydrocarbon and sulfur compound analysis by gas chromatography are generally used for analyzing oils. However, due to the complexity of oils, another technique is also needed for comparative identification. In this study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contained in crude oil and heavy fuel oil are analyzed by gas chromatography. They are relatively unaffected by weathering condition because they are stable. The oil fingerprinting of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by GC seems to be a reliable technique for analyzing oils in identification of sources and kinds of oils.

  • Mycobacterium sp. C2-3 was isolated from petroleum contaminated soil around an oil reservoir and identified by analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence, Strain C2-3 was able to use fluorene, phenan-threne, fluorathene and pyene as sole sources of carbon and energy, yet unable to geagrade naph-thalene, The strain was also able to use n-alkanes, such as hexadecane and heptadecane, and phenanthrene and pyrene, in particular, were degraded rapidly,. The phylogenetic data suggested that the isolate C2-3 is a thermosensitive, fast-growin strain of Mycobacterium sp.

  • Hetero-dimer anions of naphthalene (Np), anthracene (An), phenanthrene (Ph) and pyrene (Py) were investigated using the time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS), anion photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and theoretical calculation. There are two possible geometries with their electron affinity (EA) difference: parallel displaced (PD) and T-shaped. Dispersion force plays a key role in PD structure with the formation of a new anionic core while ${\pi}$-hydrogen interaction plays a key role in T-shaped structure with the monomer anionic core. The optimized structures and charge distributions can simply be explained by the relative difference of EA.

  • Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in processed chestnut products were determined by HPLC/FLD. The methodology involved procedures of sonication with water, extraction with hexane, and clean-up on a Sep-pak florisil cartridge. The PAH limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) ranged from 0.012 to 0.382 ${mu}g/kg$ and from 0.042 to 1.273 ${mu}g/kg$, respectively. The coefficients of variation for intra- and inter-day assays were 0.02-4.48% and 0.37-9.83%, respectively, and the accuracies were 81.95-125.44% and 79.89-116.53%, respectively. The overall recoveries for eight PAHs spiked into the processed chestnut products ranged from 87.83 to 100.56%. As a result, PAH contents were not detected in the processed chestnut products.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH) contents were evaluated in sesame oils from sesame seeds of different origins and in commercial samples using HPLC with fluorescence detection. The sesame seeds, which had been harvested from India, China, and Korea, were roasted at $250^{\circ}C$ for 25 min, and the commercial sesame oils were purchased from a local market. The recoveries for eight PAHs spiked into the sesame oils ranged from 80.2 to 99.2%. The mean levels of total PAHs in the sesame oils harvested from China, Korea, and India were 3.97, 1.57, and 1.20 ${\mu}g$/kg, respectively. The PAH contents in the commercial sesame oils ranged from 0.79 to 2.15 ${\mu}g$/kg.

  • Background: Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), the most comprehensively studied aromatic isothiocyanate, has been shown to act as an anti-cancer agent mainly through modulation of biotransformation enzymes responsible for metabolizing carcinogens in the human body. Humans are often exposed to carcinogenic factors, some of which through the diet, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon benzo[a]pyrene via the consumption of over-cooked meats. Inhibition of the enzymes responsible for the bioactivation of this carcinogen, for example CYP1A1, the major enzyme required for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) bioactivation, is recognized as a chemoprevention strategy. Objective: To evaluate the inhibitory effects of PEITC against benzo[a]pyrene-induced rise in rat liver CYP1A1 mRNA and apoprotein levels. Materials and Methods: Precision cut rat liver slices were treated with benzo[a]pyrene at 1 and $5{\mu}M$ in the presence of PEITC ($1-25{\mu}M$) for 24 hours, followed by determination of CYP1A1 mRNA and apoprotein levels using quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunoblotting. Results: Findings revealed that PEITC inhibited benzo[a]pyrene-induced rise in rat liver CYP1A1 mRNA in a dose-dependent manner as well as the apoprotein levels of CYP1A. Conclusions: It was demonstrated that PEITC can directly inhibit the bioactivation of benzo[a]pyrene, indicating chemopreventive potential.

  • Twenty four individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds both in gas- and particle-phase were quantified in three tunnels (Namsan Tunnel 3, Jeongneung Tunnel, Bukak Tunnel) to characterize vehiculate emission of PAHs. Gas phase PAHs were dominant in tunnels which consisted of 85% of total PAHs concentrations. Naphthalene and 2-methyl naphthalene were the most abundant gas phase PAH compounds, while the concentrations of fluoranthene and pyrene were highest in the particle phase. Most (96%) of the gas phase PAH compounds consisted of two- and three-aromatic rings whereas most of the particle phase PAHs were in four and five-rings (67%) in tunnels. Average BaP-eq concentrations of PAHs in the particle phase ($20.8{\pm}11.6ngm^{-3}$) was about twenty fold higher than that in the gas phase ($1.6{\pm}0.6ngm^{-3}$). It means that the particle phase PAHs has more adverse health effect than the gas phase PAHs even though the concentrations of the particle phase PAHs were lower than those of the gas phase PAHs. Compared to previous studies reporting diagnostic ratios for specific PAH compounds, the profile of individual PAH compounds measured in this study reflected well for the vehiculate emissions. We reported, for the first time, on the results of the profile of individual PAH compounds measured in tunnels for both gas and particle phases.
