  • Conductive honeycomb-patterned polystyrene (PS) thin films were prepared by the formation of a polyaniline (PANI) thin layer on the surface of the patterned PS thin films using simple one-step chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline. The in situ chemical oxidation polymerization of aniline hydrochloride solution on the patterned structure of the PS films was conducted in the presence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to prepare the PANI-MWCNT/PS composite film. The concentration (wt %) of MWCNT was varied in the range of 1%-3% by weight. The dependence of surface morphology of the PANI/PS and PANI-MWCNT/PS composite film to the polymerization time was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The room temperature DC conductivity was obtained by the four-probe technique. The conductivity of the PANI-MWCNT/PS composite film was affected both by the MWCNT concentration and polymerization time. In addition, DC electrical field was loaded during the oxidative polymerization to affect the distribution of the MWCNT included in the composite film, varying the loading voltage in the range of 0.1-3.0 V. The conductivity of the PANI-MWCNT/PS composite film was increased as loading voltage rose. However, this increase stops at a voltage higher than the critical value.

  • The electrochemical impedance spectra of polyaniline film prepared by cyclic voltammetry have been investigated in 0.1 M aqueous sulfuric acid solution. Charge transfer resistances were rather low at the oxidized states in agreement with the conductive behavior reported at these potentials. The corresponding exchange current densities were very high. Large values of capacitance associated with the polymer have been found which vary as a function of the electrode potentials. An equivalent electrical circuit has been deduced from the impedance data. It was therefore possible to obtain the parameters of the ionic mass transport within the film.

  • The 50 mole% HCl doped polyaniline(PAni) was synthesized by polymerization of aniline in the presence of hydrochloric acid and ammonium persulfate(APS) as dopant and oxidant, respectively. Then, conducting biodegradable cellulose acetate composite films were also prepared with PAni in acetone to find their applicability to antistatic packaging materials. The tensile strength of PCA05 film with 5 wt% of PAni was decreased by 27% from $377.1kg_f/cm^2$ for CA film itself to $275.2kg_f/cm^2$. Elongation was also decreased from 7.65% to 4.35%. Surface registance of $7.0{\times}10^9{\Omega}/sq$ could be achieved for the PCA containing 5 wt% of PAni. Therefore, this PCA05 film can be applied to antistatic package film for electronic board. In addition, decomposition temperature of these PCA films obtained by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) was decreased with the amount of PAni in PCA films, and the final weight of char was directly proportional to PAni contents. From this thermal result we can calculate the content of PAni in unknown PCA films.

  • Polyaniline (PANI) nanospheres, 4 run in diameter, were fabricated by the microemulsion polymerization of octyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (OTAB). The size of the PANI nanoparticles could be controlled as functions of the surfactant concentration, surfactant spacer length and polymerization temperature. The diameter of the PANI nanospheres decreased with increasing surfactant concentration and decreasing temperature. The PANI nanoparticles revealed enhanced conductivity compared to conventional bulk PANIs. In addition, the PANI nanoparticles could be applied as optically transparent conducting materials due to their high conductivity and the nanosize effect. With 9 wt% PANI in the PC matrix, the PANI/PC film exhibited a conductivity of $8.9\times10^{-3}S/cm$ and transparency exceeding 95% over the entire visible light range.

  • Polyaniline free standing films are prepared by various processing. The properties of these films such as electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding efficiency are investigated. The conductivities of films doped with a camphorsulfonic acid and a silver are found to be 170/cm and 190S/cm, respectively, indicating metallic behavior. The films added silver, which are casted from hydrochloric acid and dodecylbenzensulfonic acid, show that the electromagnetic shielding efficiency are obtained 42∼52dB and 46∼56dB in the frequency range of 10MHz∼1GHz, respectively. This suggests that the films added silver, which is casted from dodecylbenzensulfonic acid, can be used as electromagnetic shielding material.

  • In this study, we fabricated chemically polymerized PPy and PANi films with different selectivity by controlling dedoping time. And the sensing properties and mechanism of VOCs adsorption to conducting polymers were investigated. Thin sensor had higher sensitivity compared to thick one, and dedoped sensor for 1-minute highest sensitivity. Upon gas absorption, polypyrrole exhibited positive sensitivity while polyaniline had negative sensitivity. PPy film show hydrophilic property and PANi film show hydrophobic property. After the gas absorption, the sensitivity increased as a function of polarity of absorbed molecules. These behaviors are due to the polar molecules absorbed with the movable polaron or free carrier, and then it interrupt or generate the movement of polaron and carrier, and then it changes the conductivity of polymer. We found that conducting polymer sensors are very sensitive to the difference in polarity of gas molecules.

  • The electrochemical impedance spectra of polyaniline film coated on tungsten electrodes by cyclic voltammetry have been measured in 0.1 M aqueous sulfuric acid solution. An electrochemical cell composed of large redox capacitance and low resistance of PANI-film in series was in agreement with the conductive behavior reported at these potentials. When the PANI was coated on bare tungsten, the electrolytic resistance was only observed. However, on the oxidized tungsten instead of bare tungsten, the resistance of tungsten oxide and the contact resistance between PANI and tungsten oxide were additionally observed. Equivalent electrical circuits have been deduced from the impedance data. It was therfore possible to obtain the parameters of the ionic mass transport within the film.

  • We studied the effect of structural and morphological changes on the conductivity of a stretched conducting polymer film. To improve the poor processability of polyaniline, we used dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid as both a surfactant and a dopant during emulsion polymerization, followed by blending with high-impact polystyrene. UV-Vis/NIR spectra were obtained to observe conformational changes, and SEM and AFM were used to investigate morphological changes. FT-IR dichroism was applied to determine the microscopic orientation, and XRD patterns were obtained for quantitative crystallinity analysis. The electrical conductivity (${\sigma}_{\parallel}/{\sigma}_{\perp}$) was measured as a function of draw ratio. We found a clear correlation between morphological changes and (${\sigma}_{\parallel}/{\sigma}_{\perp}$), especially at the stretching limit. The conductivity of the films can be modified according to the desired application by controlling their structure and morphology.

  • Polyaniline doped with ionic liquid (1,3-dimethylimidazolium methylsulfate, I-DMS) soluble in polar solvents (NMP, DMSO, DMF, m-cresol etc.) were synthesized by nucleophilic addition. Solubilities of PAN/I-DMS powder in polar solvents were observed in the range of 3~6 wt%/vol., respectively. The electrical conductivities of PAN/I-DMS films appeared in the range of $10^{-2}{\sim}7S/cm$. Polyaniline doped with I-DMS (PAN/I-DMS) showed improved thermal stability and conductivity compared to that of HCl doped polyaniline (PAN/HCl) and dimethylsulfate (DMS) doped polyaniline (PAN/DMS) upon heat treatment at $160^{\circ}C$. These improved conductivity and solubility in organic polar solvents was explained with the interactions between the polar sulfonate group and polar solvents.

  • Polyaniline modified graphene oxide (PANI/GO) composites were synthesized by dilute polymerization technique and were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The characterization results indicated that polyaniline molecules were successfully grafted on GO surfaces. The application of PANI/GO composites to the adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solutions was investigated under ambient conditions. The maximum adsorption capacities of Co(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and U(VI) ions on PANI/GO composites calculated from Langmuir models are 22.28, 25.67, 65.40 and 1552.31 mg/g, respectively. The excellent adsorption capacity suggests that PANI/GO composites can be applied as a promising adsorbent in heavy metal pollution cleanup in environmental pollution management.
