Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of a biofilter for eliminating dimethyl sulfide(DMS). A commercial compost/pine bark nugget mixture served as the biofilter material for the experiments. The gas flow rate and DMS concentration entering the filter were varied to study their effect on the biofilter efficiency. The operating parameters, such as the residence time, inlet concentration, pH, water content, and temperature, were all monitored throughout the filter operation. The kinetic dependence of the DMS removal along the column length was also studied to obtain a quantitative description of the DMS elimination. High DMS removal efficiencies(>95%) were obtained using the compost filter material seeded with activated sludge. DMS pollutant loading rates of up to 5.2 and 5.5 g-DMS/m$^3$/hr were effectively handled by the upflow and downflow biofilter columns, respectively. The macrokinetics of the DMS removal were found to be fractional-order diffusion-limited over the 9 to 25 ppm range of inlet concentrations tested. The upflow column had an average macrokinetic coefficient(K$\_$f/) of 0.0789 $\pm$ 0.0178 ppm$\^$$\sfrac{1}{2}$//sec, while the downflow column had an average coefficient of 0.0935 $\pm$ 0.0200 ppm$\^$$\sfrac{1}{2}$//sec. Shorter residence times resulted in a lower mass transfer of the pollutant from the gas phase to the aqueous liquid phase, thereby decreasing the efficiency.
The Protocol adopted in Sep. 1997 included the new Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78, which will enter into force on 19 May 2005. MARPOL Annex VI sets limits on sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from ship exhausts and prohibits deliberate emissions of volatile organic compound (VOCs) from oil tanker in port and oil terminal. This study was conducted to find out countermeasures for the new Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78 and draw up a feasible management plan. The emission quantity of NOx and SOX from ships in Ulsan Port was calculated by U.S. EPA and Japan Marine Engineering emission factors of air pollutant from ship exhausts. In addition, volatile organic compound (VOCs) from oil tanker during the loading and discharging period, also calculated.

Feasibility of floating aquatic plants (Eichhornia crassipes and Water dropwort) was investigated in order to control of sewage depending on various initial loading in a lab scale test. In addition, field test was conducted to assess the uptake rate of nutrient by E. crassipes. Lab-scale test applying primary domestic effluent operated at 4 day HRT shows that the highest uptake rates were 1.06 g N/$m^2{\cdot}day$ and 0.39 g P/$m^2{\cdot}day$ in the E. crassipes reactor. BOD removal efficiency in E. crassipes reactor was as high as 80% when the loading value was lower than 185 kg BOD/$ha{\cdot}day$. While 70 ~ 80% removal efficiency of BOD was achieved when the loading value was lower 80 kg BOD/$ha{\cdot}day$ at the W. Dropwort reactor. Experiment results show that E.crassipes has a higher nutrients removal efficiency than W. dropwort under high pollutant loading. Input loadings of TN and TP should not exceed to 10 kg TN/$ha{\cdot}day$ and 2.0 kg TP/$ha{\cdot}day$ respectively to provide a 50% TN and 80% TP removal efficiencies using E. crassipes. The field test demonstrated that an annual yield of E. crassipes mass was estimated as a fresh weight of 30.9 $m^3/ha{\cdot}yr$. E. crassipes grown in field pads absorbed 76.7 kg N/$ha{\cdot}yr$ and 13.4 kg P/$ha{\cdot}yr$ as a dry weight.

Storm runoff from road contains significant loads of particulate and dissolved solids, organic constituents and metal elements. Micro particle is important when considering pollution mitigation because pollutant metal and organics have similar behavior with particles. The objective of this research is to evaluate the hydrodynamic filter separator performance for road storm runoff treatment. A various types of media such as perlite, granular activated carbon, zeolite were used for column test packing media and filter separator, and to determine the removal efficiency with various surface loading rate. As the results of column test, the highest SS removal efficiency was using mixed media(granular activated carbon, zeolite and perlite), and granular activated carbon mixed with zeolite has higher heavy metal removal efficiency than perlite. In laboratory scale hydrodynamic filter separator study, the operation ranges of surface loading rates were from 192 to 1,469 $m^3/m^2/day$. The estimated overall removal efficiencies of hydrodynamic filter separator for typical storm runoff were SS 48.1%, BOD 31.9%, COD 32.6%, TN 15.5%, and TP 17.3%, respectively. For the case of heavy metals, overall removal efficiencies were Fe 26.0%, Cu 19.4%, Cr 25.7, Zn 16.6%, and Pb 15.0%, respectively. The most appropriate medium for hydrodynamic filter separator was perlite mixed with granular activated carbon to treatment of road storm runoff.
A set of lab-scale polymer synthetic fiber packed column wetlands composing three columns (CW1, CW2 and CW3) with different hydraulic regimes, recirculation frequencies and pollutant loading rates, were operated in 2012. Synthetic fiber tested as an alternative wetland medium for soil mixture or gravel which has been widely used, has very high pore size and volume, so that clogging opportunity can be greatly avoided. The inflow to the wetland was artificial stormwater. All the wetlands achieved effective removal of TSS (94%~96%), TCOD (68%~73%), TN (35%~58%), TKN (62%~73%) and NH4-N (85%~ 99%). Particularly, it was observed that COD was released from the fiber during one distinct period in all wetlands. This was probably due to the degradation of polymer fiber, and the released organic matters were found to serve as carbon source for denitrification. In addition, with longer retention time and frequent recirculation, lower effluent concentration was observed. With higher pollutant loading rate, higher nitrification and denitrification rates were achieved. However, although organic matters were released from the fiber, the lack of carbon source was still the limiting factor for the system since the release persisted only for 40 days.
Design data for COD and nitrogen removal from wastewater were collected from Pilot's Multi-stage Bio-reactor. Hyraulic conditions and pollutant loadings were varied in order to optimize the biological and operational parameters. Pilot's experimental results summarize as followings. 1. T-N removal efficiency in the organic volumetric loading 0.2 kgCOD/m$^{3}$·d was obtained as maxium of 85% at internal recycle ratio 2.5 and in more ratio than this it was decreased. Organic removal efficiency was about 91% under the overall experimental conditions and not influenced by recycle ratio.. 2. Nitrification reaction was shown as maxium in the SCOD$_{cr}$/NH$^{+}$-N ratio of 6.5 and in more ratio than this it was decreased. Denitrification rate was the maxium as 85% in more than 7.5 of SCOD$_{cr}$/NO$_{x}$-N ratio and in the ratio over this ratio it becomes constant. 3. By utilizing an applied new model of Stover-Kincannon from Monod's kinetic model, concentration of T-N in the effluent according to flow quanity in the influent was estimated as 8.74 and -67.5 respectively. The formula for estimating T-N concentration of effluent was obtained like this: N$_e$=N$_0$(1- $\frac{8.74}{(QN$_0$/A)-67.05}$)

Low impact development (LID) technique is recently proposed as new concept to reduce surface runoff and pollutant loading with various best management practices (BMPs). In this study, LIDMOD2, which is one of the model to evaluate LID, was applied at Mohyeon developing area to evaluate the redcution of annual runoff and pollution loading, cost-reduction efficient by LID with design of structural BMPs including bioretention, wet pond, and wetland. As a simulation results, the bioretention had the highest reduction efficiency for runoff (41.43%), and 22% for T-N and 22% for BOD. Wet pont had the highest reduction efficiency for T-P as showing 25% of reduction rate. As a results of cost-reduction efficient, wet pont represented the highest cost-effective for T-N and BOD with showing 0.43 T-P kg/million won and 17.37 BOD kg/million won, respectively, and bioretention represented the highest cost-effective for T-P with showing 2.52 T-P kg/million won. LID technology could reduce effectively surface runoff and nonpoint source pollution and construct sustainable development. LIDMOD2 could be suggested as useful tool to evaluate and design LID.
The urbanization affects significantly on a natural water circulation system by increasing the imperviousness rate. It is also negatively affecting on urban temperature, environmental pollution, water quality, and aqua-ecosystems. The Korea MOE (Ministry of Environment) adapted a new environmental policy in order to reduce the impact of urbanization, which is the Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) program. The GSI can be achieved by protecting conservable green spaces, enlarging more green spaces, and constructing more permeable pavements. The GSI is including many different techniques such as bioretention, rain garden, infiltration trench and so on. Also It is the infrastructures using natural mechanisms of soils, microorganisms, plants and animals on a water circulation system and pollutant reduction. In this research, a multi functional GSI technology with infiltration-filtration mechanisms has been developed and performed lab-scale tests to evaluate the performances about infiltration rate restoration and pollutant reduction. The most of pollutants including metals, organics and particulates were reduced about 50~90% due to water infiltration and storage functions. The clogging was found when the TSS loading rate was reached on $8.3{\sim}9.0kg/m^2$, which value is higher than the values in literatures. It means the new technology can show high performances with low maintenances.
Field experiment was performed from August 1996 to December 1999 to examine the feasibility of constructed wetland system for sewage treatment in rural areas. A pilot system was installed in Konkuk University and the effluent of septic tank for school building was used as an influent to the wetland treatment basin. The system was composed of sand and reed, and operated continuously including winter time. Average removal rate of about 70% was observed for BOD, COD, and SS, about 50% for T-P, and about 25% for T-N. The reason for poor T-N removal might be due to high loading rate and short retention time. The system demonstrated satisfactory effluent concentration and stable performance in growing season. And it also worked adequately in wintertime even below $10^{\circ}C$ without freezing, and removal was still significant. The amount removed in BOD, COD, and SS was almost the same as in the growing season, and the amount removed in nutrients was about half of the one in growing season. Overall performance of the experimental system was compared with existing data base (NADB, 1994), and it was within the range of general system performance. As study period increased, removal rates for BOD, COD, SS, and T-P were consistently maintained and even enhanced, but removal rate for T-N decreased slightly. Wetland system was thought to be a feasible alternative for sewage treatment in rural area considering its low cost and low maintenance requirement. However, the effluent of the experimental wetland system often exceeded current effluent water quality standards, therefore, further treatment could be required if the effluent should be discharged to public waters. Wetland system of interest locates in rural area and is a part of rural ecosystem, therefore, ultimate disposal of reclaimed sewage for agricultural purpose or subsequent land treatment might be available and further research in this matter is recommended.
This study was carried out to forecast the flow rate and water quality at the inlet of the Saemangeum bay in Korea using the SWMM(Storm Water Management Model) and the WASP(Water Analysis Simulation Program), and to analyze the impacts of pollutant loading from non-point source on the water quality of the bay. The calibration and validation of flow rate and water quality were performed using those from two monitoring points in the Mankyeong river administrated by Korean Ministry of Environment as part of the national water quality monitoring network. When the river flow rate was calibrated and validated using the rainfall intensities during 2011-2012, $R^2$ (i.e., coefficient of determination) was ranged from 0.91 to 0.96. For water qualities, it was shown that $R^2$ of BOD(Biochemical Oxygen Demand) was ranged from 0.56 to 0.86, and $R^2$ of T-N(Total Nitrogen) was from 0.64 to 0.75, and $R^2$ of T-P(Total Phosphorus) was from 0.67 to 0.89. The integrated modeling system showed significant advances in the accuracy to estimate the water quality. Finally, further simulations showed that annual average flow of the river running into the bay was estimated to be $1.439{\times}10^9m^3/year$. The discharged load of BOD, T-N, and T-P into the bay were anticipated to be 618.7 ton/year, 331.5 ton/year, and 40.4 ton/year, respectively.
