  • The characteristics such as characters of seed, fruit and endosperm, development of embryo, dehisced and germination rate of seeds which harvested at 10 days intervals from 20 days to 60 days after pollination were determined to clarify the optimum time for seed production of ginseng. The sizes of length, width and thickness of fruits, seeds and endosperms investigated on 20 days after pollination were not largely different from those that harvested after 60 days. But the weights of fruits and seeds were increased along with the delay of harvesting time. The seeds which harvested from 30 to 60 days showed comparatively high dehisced and germinated rates, especially 40 days in dehisced rates and 50 days in germinated rates. The embryos were rapidly grown in early stage. Lengths of the embryo on 20 days after pollination were approximately grown to 30 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. And after 30 days pollinated, embryos were not only more rapidly grown to 213 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ but also cotyledon premodia were developed in this time and completely formed after 40 days.

  • A new technique involving gamma-spectrometry was used to determine the effects of pollination on mineral uptake in petals, ovaries and leaves of tulips and daffodils. A gamma-emitting radionu'::lide solution containing selenium-75, cesium-137, manganese-54, and zinc-65 was applied to the roots of tulips and daffodils growing in water. Mineral uptake was monitored in plant parts over a 24 day period. Pollinated tulip flowers showed a rapid withdrawal of minerals from the petals and an increase in ovary mineral content, while such a source-sink relationship was not established in daffodils. In both species, the concentration of most minerals in petals and ovaries declined prior to abortion of the plant part. The roots and bulbs of the plants contained the vast majority of the labeled minerals. This study demonstrated a possibility that certain plant parts could be isolated and monitored for mineral uptake over time without destruction.uction.

  • This experiment was conducted to elucidate the basic physiological phenomena of pollination and fertilization for breeding in perilla (Perilla frutescens) through different 6 varieties derived from 2 genera under 4 temperature conditions at day and night. The pollen germination was observed after 30 minutes and pollen tube reached the lower part of pistil after 1 hour from artificial pollination. Seed formation was affected by temperature condition and a variety. The early maturing variety 'YCPL 25' showed a poor seed formation rate under the night temperature below $15^{\circ}C$, but the late maturing variety 'YCPL263' did not lowered even though the night time temperature was $10^{\circ}C$. The function of pistil was long maintained under the low temperature from the fact that if the live pollen pollinate artificially to the flower that does not form seed under low temperature, fruiting was made. Pollen was created and pollen tube was developed in the time of petal becomes bigger than calyx in five varieties, 'YCPLl77-1' etc. However, pollen was made and pollen tube was made only 71% in a green chajogi 'YCPL205-1'. These physiological phenomena of pollination and fertilization could be applicable to the emasculation and an effective breeding in perilla.

  • Spatio-temporal variation in fruit set in orchids would affect long-term population viability and will influence genetic diversity over many generations. The aim of this study was to examine the breeding system of the nectariferous terrestrial orchid Epipactis thunbergii, to specifically determine levels of fruit set in terms of time and space under natural conditions. We examined pollination under natural conditions and conducted hand pollination experiments during a 2-year survey in four populations located along 1.5 km of coastal line in Jinguiri (rual village) [Jeollanam-do (province), southern Korea]. We found that, over a 2-year period, levels of percentage of fruit set were similar within patches of the four populations. By contrast, we detected significant differences in the percentage of fruit set among patches. We also found that plants with larger inflorescence size produced significantly more fruits than plants with fewer flowers. Over a 2-year period, the percentage of fruit set for E. thunbergii was similar but low (14.1%) compared to that averaged for eighty-four rewarding species (37.1%). However, an increase in fruit set was achieved by hand-pollinations: artificial self-pollination (90.5-95.2%), artificial geitonogamy (94.7-95.0%), and cross-pollination (artificial xenogamy, 91.3-91.4%). No emasculated flowers produced fruits and no automatic pollination was found in E. thunbergii. Our findings suggest that E. thunbergii is a self-compatible terrestrial orchid that depends on pollinators (insects) to achieve fruit set in natural habitats, and that local environmental conditions were similar over a period of 2 years in the study area. Our results also highlight the cryptic variation of fruit production in time, but more pronounced variability in space.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of limited nutrient supply during 21 days before and after pollination stage on the growth, fruit quality and nutrient uptake of muskmelon in rockwool culture. Muskmelon, cv. Earl's Favorite seeds sowed on rockwool cube and transplanted on rockwool slab($90\times15\times7.5cm$) when 2 to 3 true leaf appeared on Sep. 6, 1991. Three kinds of nutrient composition recommended by Shizuoka university, combinated with the composition of Otsuka house A and composition Shizuoka III. One half of calcium nitrate(Ca(NO$_3$)$_2$.4$H_2O$) for limiting nitrogen supply during 21 days was treated and then fertigated the nutrient composition recommended by Shizuoka university up to harvest time. Trickling nozzles(Netafim Co. Israel) were used for fertigation of nutrient solution and noncirculating system was employed. Temperature was maintained $18^{\circ}C$ in night but 23 to $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days after pollination for softening the fruit. The drainage ratio of nutrient solution was adjusted 20 to 30 percent. Fertigated and drained amount, and the pH and EC of nutrient solution were recorded. The concentrations of mineral elements including N, P, K, Ca, and Mg were analyzed and compared among treatments. In both autumn and winter cultivation, the limitation of nutrient supply by adjustment of nutrient composition(NO$_3$-N : 8meㆍ$\ell^{-1}$) caused the nutrient deficiency in muskmelon plant due to the limited nutrient supply. After pollination nutrient limitation by the lowering the nitrate retarded the over thickening of upper leaves of muskmelon but plant height and fresh weight of fruit were higher in the plot of nonlimited nutrient supply. The phenomena were attributed to the differences of the amount of nutrient uptake due to the limited time of nutrient solution, duration of nutrient supply and concentration of nutrient solution. These results suggested that increasing nutrient supply in the pollination stage was favorable for better appearance of fruit and improving fruit quality. Further trials would be required for the incre-ment of sugar degree of muskmelon grown in rockwool.

  • The pollination system of Bupleurum latissimum Nakai (Apiaceae) was investigated in the natural population of Korea. The various insects of 19 species, 11 families, 5 orders visited the flowers of B. latissimum. Episyrphus balteatus and Lasioglossum occidens were considered as the most effective pollen vector which have associated specially with B. latissimum. The visitation frequency peaked at 10 AM - 13 PM and no visitor was recognized during night time. The flowers of B. latissimum last during only three days and they are protandry. It is also confirmed that the flower of B. latissimum is self-compatible and cross-pollination by vectors is critical for successful seed setting.

  • A study has been made on phenomena of fertilization, hair genesis, and development of such forma of cotton flower as Mok Po 5, Red Leaf, Paymaster, Acala 1517w. 1) The pollen occurs to germinat at 4 hrs after its pollination and reaches the base of style 10 hrs. later, when 18 hrs elapsed, it gets enter at micropyle passes through placenta. 2) There may remain only one synergid as another one is occupied by pollen tube when it enters micropyle. 3) The fertilization completed at 18-48 hrs. after pollination. It was observed that Mok Po5 is the fastest, somewhat slower in Red Leaf and the slowest is the case of Paymaster in its speed. 4) Wool hair is formed by development of daughter cell which is. due to epidermal cell division' it starts its way right before blooming. 5) Wool hair is the most in its number covering about 60-80 within one hour ofter pollination and finishes its forming within 4-6 hours. The number is more abunbant at basal portion of ovule and rather at outer surface than at inner one of it. 6) The average length of wool hair checked at different time limit is as follows. 2.7-8.3$^{\mu} m$ 1 hr after pollination. 43.3-263.7$^{\mu} m$ 24-48 hrs. after pollination. The growth speed both of Mok Po 5 and Red Leaf get nearly same value but Paymaster is somewhat slower in its speed.

  • The fertilizations of cv Palkweng, Noupoung, and TN 1 which were crossed artificially at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 3$0^{\circ}C$ were examined. The meiosis and the rate of maturity of the above 3 cultivars, Iri #326, Milyang #29, Suwon #264, and 3 others which were transplated at different times in paddy field were examined, and the results of which were as follows. 1. Palkweng at 3$0^{\circ}C$ was fertilized within 1.5~4.0 hours ,after pollination and at 20\circ C was done within 2.8~4.5 hours after pollination. 2. Noupoung and TNI at 3$0^{\circ}C$ were fertilized within 2.0~5.5 hours after pollination and at 2$0^{\circ}C$ were done within 3.0~6.0 hours after pollination. 3. The rates of fertilization of the cultivated rice plants at 2$0^{\circ}C$ were dropped in general. TN 1 at 2$0^{\circ}C$ was often fertilized abnormally. 4. In the development of embryo, Palkweng was the earliest at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and TN 1 was the earliest at 2$0^{\circ}C$. 5. Although the time of transplant was late, the pollens of Palkweng was normal because the meiosis of that was normal. but the pollens of TNI was sterile in general because of the abnormal meiosis.
