Recently, it has been studied machining of micro parts with increasing demands for ultra precision parts. However, many engineering problems have already begun in polishing of optical parts or lens. As a method to overcome such problems, a new technology for the polishing of the target surface is being studied by controlling abrasives using MR fluids which are sensitive to magnetic fields. Since the current MR polishing system uses a big electromagnet, and is difficult to polish micro parts or spherical lens. Therefore, in this study, a round endmill type MR polishing system was developed to polish a three-dimensional structure which has spherical or inclined plane. And then, series of experiments were performed to verify the polishing performance of the developed round endmill type MR polishing system.

Die polishing technology is very critical to determine quality and performance of the final products. Die polishing processes have not been automated because the automation requires a great deal of experience and skill of experts. Thus, to implement a fully automated polishing process, the development of polishing status monitoring system replacing the skill of experts is critical. AE is known to be closely related to material removal rate(MRR). As the surface is rougher, MRR gets larger and AE increased. The surface roughness can be indirectly estimated using the AE signal measured during automatic die polishing process. In this study, The polishing state monitoring system using AEms signal was developed. This system can be not only to monitor the abnormal state but also to estimate a state of surface roughness of polishing surface qualitatively.
Fluid jet polishing is a method of jetting a fluid to polish a concave or free-form surface. However, the fluid jet method is difficult to form a stable polishing spot because of the lack of concentration. In order to solve this problem, MR fluid jet polishing system using an abrasive mixed with an MR fluid whose viscosity changes according to the intensity of a magnetic field is under study. MR fluid jet polishing is not easy to formulate for precise optimal conditions and material removal due to numerous fluid compositions and process conditions. Therefore, in this paper, quantitative data on the factors that have significant influence on the machining conditions are presented using various simulations and the correlation studies are conducted. In order to verify applicability of the fabricated MR fluid jet polishing system by nozzle diameter, the flow pattern and velocity distribution of MR fluid and polishing slurry of MR fluid jet polishing were analyzed by flow analysis and shear stress due to magnetic field changes was analyzed. The MR fluid of the MR fluid jet polishing and the flow pattern and velocity distribution of the polishing slurry were analyzed according to the nozzle diameter and the effects of nozzle diameter on the polishing effect were discussed. The analysis showed that the maximum shear stress was 0.45 mm at the diameter of 0.5 mm, 0.73 mm at 1.0 mm, and 1.24 mm at 1.5 mm. The cross-sectional shape is symmetrical and smooth W-shape is generated, which is consistent with typical fluid spray polishing result. Therefore, it was confirmed that the high-quality surface polishing process can be stably performed using the developed system.
Porcelain is considered to be one of the materials of choice for restoration where esthetics is of concern. But porcelain surface without final glazing treatment may induce undesirable results such as inflammatory response on adjacent soft tissues due to plaque accumulation and increased wear of opposing teeth. Therefore, rough porcelain surface must be smoothened by final glazing treatment or chairside polishing procedure. The purpose of this study was to compare the surface roughness among self-glazed, overglazed and polished porcelain with various polishing kit, and to detect which phase of polishing is optimal in clinic. Specimens were fabricated with Vita VMK porcelain. The surface treatment of each group was performed as follows. Group 1 : overglazing treatment Group 2 : self-glazing treatment Group 3 : polishing with the Truluster Polishing System for Porcelain(Brasseler, U.S.A.) Group 4 : polishing with the Exa Cerapol Adjustment kit (Edenta dental products, Switzerland) followed by finishing with diamond-filled polishing paste Group 5 : polishing with the Shofu Porcelain Adjustment kit (Shofu inc., Japan) followed by finishing with diamond-filled polishing paste. At each polishing steps, the measurement of Ra and Rq values were performed, and the surface was examined by scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : 1. Overglazing treatment brought smoother surface than self-glazing treatment. 2. Polishing systems without porcelain polishing paste did not make better result than self-glazing treatment. 3. Polishing system with porcelain polishing paste made similar result to overglazing treatment. 4. Applying diamond-filled polishing paste after using polishing system which has no porcelain polishing paste produced surface as smooth as overglazing treatment does.

Polishing work for a curved surface die demands simple and repetitive operations and requires much time while it also demands high precision. Therefore it is operated by skilled worker in handiwork. Howener workers avoid polishing work gradually because of the poor environments such as dust and noise. In order to reduce the polishing time and to alleviate the problem of shortage of skilled workers, researches for automation of polishing have been pursued in the developed countries. In the research, a polishing robot with 2 degrees of freedom motion attached to machining center with 3 degrees of freedom and pneumatic system forms an automatic polishing system which keeps the polishing tool vertically on the surface of die and maintains constant pneumatic pressure. A synchronization between machining center and polishing robot is accomplished by using M code of machining center. A rulled surface and shadow mask are polished by the developed polishing robot.

Generally, abrasive fluid jet polishing system has been used for polishing of complex shape or freeform surface which has steep local slopes. In the system, abrasive fluid jet is injected through a nozzle at high pressure; however, it is inevitable to lose its coherence as the jet exits a nozzle. This problem causes incorrect polishing results because of unstable and unpredictable workpiece material removal at the impact zone. In order to solve this problem, MR fluid jet polishing method has been developed using a mixture of abrasive and MR fluid which can maintain highly collimated and coherent jet by applied magnetic field. Thus, in this study, an injection nozzle and an electromagnetic module, most important parts in the MR polishing system, were designed and verified by magnetic field and flow analysis. As the results of experiments, it can be confirmed that stable fluid jets for polishing were generated since smooth W-shapes and uniform spot size were observed regardless of standoff distance changes.

To reduce the cost and increase reliability of die and mold products, automation of the finishing (polishing) process is essential. A major element of automation is a reliable database and a knowledge base for polishing status. This paper presents a polishing expert system which can determine optimal polishing sequences and conditions by using an empirical formula and an experimental database. The simplex method was used for the curve fittings of the experimental results. Also a graphical user interface, which visualizes the optimized results, was developed.

A monitoring system is necessary to make the polishing process more reliable in order to ensure the high quality and performance of the final products. Generally, AE (Acoustic Emission) is known to be closely related to the material removal rate (MRR). As the surface becomes rougher, the MRR and AE increase. Therefore, the surface roughness can be indirectly estimated using the AE signal measured during the polishing. In this study, an AE sensor-based monitoring system was fabricated to detect the very small AE signal resulting from the friction between a tool and a workpiece during polishing. The performance of this monitoring system was estimated according to polishing conditions, the relation between the level of the AE RMS and the surface roughness during the polishing was investigated.

The use of small hemispherical high-speed precision bearing has increased drastically these days in the field of computer disk driver, highteech devices as well as communication and electronic device drivers. It was suggested that the new polishing process adopting the diamond grinding wheel and polishing tool instead of multi stage lapping processes, which enables the mass production of the bearing by reduction of polishing time. Polishing mechanism was analysed and the results were applied to the design and manufacturing of the polishing system. Experiments for selection of optimal polishing conditions were carried out using the polishing system.

It used the flow system of the stone polishing machine head and it developed a multi axis whetstone polishing system. With the result, the defect by line contact polishing does not occur in both ends of the stone, and it came to trim smoothly. As the index of the surface roughness decreased to 3.6 times, the polishing effect improved greatly. It decreased greatly the dust and a noise with the wet polishing, and the factors of the duty evasion at production site were solved with the work environment improvement against the polishing process of the stone industry and work intensive reduction.
