Trends of the vibration isolation system for spacecrafts (진동절연 시스템의 위성체 적용 동향)

  • A spacecraft contends with various vibration from the launch to the on-orbit operation, which is one of the major considerations in spacecraft design. The weight reduction has been indispensable to decrease the launch cost, however it produces worse disturbances for the spacecraft equipments. Besides, the load requirements at observation payload interfaces have became severe to secure their pointing stability as their images are required with high resolution. As a possible solution, a vibration isolation system is introduced and it reduces the vibration from the launch vehicle or isolates the spacecraft equipments from their generating/transmitted vibration. In this paper, it is examined the design consideration needed for the accommodation of the vibration isolation systems through the survey of recent applications of vibration mitigation technologies to spacecrafts.

  • The thermal analysis of electronic equipment is required to predict the reliability of electronic equipment being loaded on a satellite. The transient heat transfer of electronic equipment that was developed recently has been generated using a large-scale integration circuit. If there is a transient heat transfer between EEE(Electric, Electronic and Electro mechanical) parts, it may lead to failure the satellite mission. In this study, we performed the thermal design and analysis for reliability of APD(Antenna Pointing Driver) electronics for activation of a spaceborne X-band 2-axis antenna. The EEE parts were designed using a thermal mathematical model without the thermal mitigation element. In addition, thermal analysis was performed based on the worst case for verifying the reliability of EEE parts. For the thermal analysis results, the thermal stability of electronic equipment has been demonstrated by satisfying the de-rating junction temperature.

  • Spaceborne pulse tube-type cryogenic compressors are widely used for space applications. To guarantee cooling performance of the compressor, mission life time and micor-vibration stability, suitable thermal control of compressor is required. Micro-vibration of the compressor is the one of the sources to degrade the pointing performance of observation satellite. In the present work, on-orbit thermal design of compressor in order not to degrade the performance of micro-vibration isolation system keeping the thermal control performance has been proposed and investigated through thermo-mechanical analysis.

Knitted Data Glove System for Finger Motion Classification (손가락 동작 분류를 위한 니트 데이터 글러브 시스템)

  • This paper presents a novel knitted data glove system for pattern classification of hand posture. Several experiments were conducted to confirm the performance of the knitted data glove. To find better sensor materials, the knitted data glove was fabricated with stainless-steel yarn and silver-plated yarn as representative conductive yarns, respectively. The result showed that the signal of the knitted data glove made of silver-plated yarn was more stable than that of stainless-steel yarn according as the measurement distance becomes longer. Also, the pattern classification was conducted for the performance verification of the data glove knitted using the silver-plated yarn. The average classification reached at 100% except for the pointing finger posture, and the overall classification accuracy of the knitted data glove was 98.3%. With these results, we expect that the knitted data glove is applied to various robot fields including the human-machine interface.

Effect of the Signal-to-Noise Power Spectra Ratio On MTF compensated EOC images

  • EOC (Electro-Optical Camera) of KOMPSAT-1 (Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite) has been producing land imageries of the world since January 2000. After image data are acquired by EOC, they are transmitted from satellite to ground via X-band RF signal. Then, EOC image data are generated and pass through radiometric and geometric corrections to generate standard products of EOC images. After radiometric correction on EOC image data, Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) compensation is applicable on EOC images with user's request for better image quality. MTF compensation is concerned with filtering EOC images to minimize the effect of degradations. For Image Receiving and Processing System (IRPE) at KOMPSAT Ground Station (KGS), Wiener filter is used in MTF compensation for EOC images. If the Pointing Spread Function (PSF) of EOC system is known, signal-to-noise power spectra ratio is the only factor in the determination of Wiener filter. In this paper, MTF compensation in IRPE at KGS is introduced and MTF compensated EOC 1R images are generated using Wiener filters with various signal-to-noise power spectra ratios. MTF compensated EOC 1R images are correlated with EOC 1R images for observing linearities between them. As a result, the effect of signal-to-noise power spectra ratio is shown on MTF compensated EOC 1R images.

  • Landing site searching algorithms are developed for a quadrotor using a depth map in unknown environment. Guidance and control system of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) consists of a trajectory planner, a position and an attitude controller. Landing site is selected based on the information of the depth map which is acquired by a stereo vision sensor attached on the gimbal system pointing downwards. Flatness information is obtained by the maximum depth difference of a predefined depth map region, and the distance from the UAV is also considered. This study proposes three landing methods and compares their performance using various indices such as UAV travel distance, map accuracy, obstacle response time etc.

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) is widely used to efficiently share, utilize and manage information generated in every phase of a construction project. Recently, mixed reality (MR) technologies have been introduced to more effectively utilize BIM elements. This study deals with the haptic interactions between humans and BIM elements in MR to improve BIM usability. As the first step in interacting with virtual objects in mixed reality, we challenged moving a virtual object to the desired location using finger-pointing. This paper presents the procedure of developing a haptic interface system where users can interact with a BIM object to move it to the desired location in MR. The interface system consists of an MR-based head-mounted display (HMD) and a mobile application developed using Unity 3D. This study defined two segments to compute the scale factor and rotation angle of the virtual object to be moved. As a result of testing a cuboid, the user can successfully move it to the desired location. The developed MR-based haptic interface can be used for aligning BIM elements overlaid in the real world at the construction site.

Optimal Design of a Coudé Mirror Assembly for a 1-m Class Ground Telescope

  • These days, the size of a reflective telescope has been increasing for astronomical observation. An additional optical system usually assists a large ground telescope for image analysis or the compensation of air turbulence. To guide collimated light to the external optical system through a designated path, a coudé mirror is usually adopted. Including a collimator, a coudé mirror of a ground telescope is affected by gravity, depending on the telescope's pointing direction. The mirror surface is deformed by the weight of the mirror itself and its mount, which deteriorates the optical performance. In this research, we propose an optimization method for the coudé mirror assembly for a 1-m class ground telescope that minimizes the gravitational surface error (SFE). Here the mirror support positions and the sizes of the mount structure are optimized using finite element analysis and the response surface optimization method in both the horizontal and vertical directions, considering the telescope's altitude angle. Throughout the whole design process, the coefficients of the Zernike polynomials are calculated and their amplitude changes are monitored to determine the optimal design parameters. At the same time, the design budgets for the thermal SFE and the mass and size of the mount are reflected in the study.

Dynamic response analysis of nanoparticle-nanobeam impact using nonlocal theory and meshless method

  • In this study, the impact response of a nanobeam with a moving nanoparticle is investigated. Timoshenko beam theory is used to model the nanobeam behavior and nonlocal elasticity theory is used to consider the effects of small dimensions. The interaction between the nanoparticle and nanobeam has been described using Lennard-Jones potential theory and the equations are discretized by the radial basis meshless method and a mathematical model is presented for the nanobeam-nanoparticle system. Validation of the proposed model is achieved by comparing the obtained natural frequencies with reference values, demonstrating good agreement. Dimensionless frequency analysis reveals a decrease with increasing nonlocal parameter, pointing out a toughening effect in nanobeam. The dynamic response of the nanobeam and nanoparticle is obtained by time integration of equations of motion using Newmark and Wilson-𝜃 methods. A comparative analysis of the two methods is conducted to determine the most suitable approach for this study. As a distinctive aspect in this study, the analysis incorporates the deformation of the nanobeam resulting from the nanoparticle-nanobeam interaction when calculating the Lennard-Jones force in the nanobeam-nanoparticle system. The numerical findings explore the impact of various factors, including the nonlocal parameter, initial velocity, nanoparticle mass, and boundary conditions.
