This paper presents a ground surface settlement prediction method for shield tunneling in cohesive soils. In order to develop the method, a parametric study on shield tunneling was performed by using a threetimensional elasto-plastic finite element analysis, which can simulate the construction procedure. By using the results of the finite element analysis, the ground movement mechanism was investigated and a base which relates the ground surface settlement and iuluencing factors was formed. The data base was then used to formulate semi -empirical equations for both surface settlement ratio above tunnel face and imflection point by means of a regression analysis. Furthermore, a prediction method for transverse and longitudinal surface settlement profiles was suggested by using the leveloped equations in conjunction with the normal probability curve. Effectiveness of the developed method was illustrated by comparing settlement profiles obtained by using the developed method with the results of finite element analysis and measured data. Based on the comparison, it was concluded that the developed method can be effectively rosed for practical applications at least within the conditions investigated.
A self-assembled monolayer of 2,2'-bipyridine (22BPY) molecules on Au(111) underwent a structural phase transition when the polarity of a bias voltage was switched in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments. The nature of two bright spots representing each 22BPY molecule on Au(111) in the high-resolution STM images was identified by calculating the partial density plots for a monolayer of 22BPY molecules adsorbed on Au(111) using tight-binding electronic structure calculations. The stacking pattern of the chains of 22BPY molecules on Au(111) was explained by examining the intermolecular interactions between the 22BPY molecules based on first principles electronic structure calculations for a 22BPY dimer, (22BPY)2. The structural instability of the 22BPY molecule arrangement caused by a change in the bias voltage switch was investigated by estimating the adsorbate-surface interaction energy using a point-charge approximation for Au(111).
Vibrations were measured at the surface of a GTX-A site to assess the impact of blasting on underground tunneling. A numerical analysis was conducted using the same ground and blast conditions as those at the site, accompanied by a comparative analysis of other GTX-A sites. This analysis determined the maximum vibration velocity at regular intervals directly above the blasting point at each site. The results were compared with domestic and international vibration standards to establish the vibration measurement range. The specified vibration measurement locations in domestic regulations—"measuring from the closest part of the structure's foundation to the blasting source, and if conditions make it impossible, measuring from the nearest surface to it"—were evaluated. Furthermore, this study underscores the significance of considering the tunnel drilling depth and soil conditions when selecting a vibration measurement location.

Critical strain is a new material property of the ground. Critical strain concept which was established in tunnel engineering can be applied to deformation limits in the ground due to tunneling by using the measured displacement at the tunnel construction site. In this study, quantitative evaluations for the tunnel stability are conducted by analysing the displacement results obtained at the construction field. Especially, critical stain concept was reviewed from a total displacement point of view using the displacements occurring before excavation. As a results, the variation characteristics of the tunnel stability are presented on the critical strain diagram with or without the preceeding displacements.

The objective of this study is the evaluation of the tunneling effect on the groundwater-surface water interaction. The designed tunnel line is laid beneath the Gapo-cheon, which runs throughout study area. And, the pre-evaluation of the tunnel-influence on the Gapo-cheon is urgently needed. However, it is very difficult to find out the similar domestic and/or foreign cases. In this study, we would exclude the numerical modeling technique with insufficient data. Instead of the evaluation of the tunneling effect on the groundwater-surface water interaction with the numerical modeling, we monitored the flow rate of surface water at various point. We measured the flow rate of surface water at 5 points. With the results of surface flow, we can conclude that 39% of flow rate in Gapo-cheon is contributed by the groundwater discharge, as baseflow.

The binary chalcogenide semiconductor Bi2Se3 is at the center of intensive research on a new state of matter known as topological insulators. It has Dirac point in their band structures with robust surface states that are protected against external perturbations by strong spin-orbit coupling with broken inversion symmetry. Such unique band configurations were confirmed by recent angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy experiments with an unwanted n-type doping effect, showing a Fermi level shift of about 0.3 eV caused by atomic defects such as Se vacancies. Since the number of defects can be reduced using the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method. We have prepared the Bi2Se3 film on noble metal Au(111) and semiconductor Si(111) substrates by MBE method. To characterize the film, we have introduced several surface sensitive techniques including x-ray photoemission electron spectroscopy (XPS) and micro Raman spectroscopy. Also, crystallinity of the film has been confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Using home-built scanning tunneling microscope, we observed the atomic structure of quintuple layered Bi2Se3 film on Au(111).
Purpose: Recent development and advances in the arthroscopic surgical techniques for anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) reconstruction have led to the ideal location for more oblique anatomic point of the femur from 10 to 10:30 o'clock(in the right knee) and from 2 to 1:30 o'clock(in the left knee) in the frontal plane. This study was performed to compare the operative methods and the radiologic results of the femoral tunnels made through the tibial tunnel(trans-tibial approach) and the anteromedial portal. Materials and Methods: From January 2003 to May 2004, on hundred reconstructions of ACL were performed. Group I(the femoral tunnel made through the tibial tunnel) consisted of 50 cases and group I(the femoral tunnel made through the anteromedial portal) consisted of 50 cases. The operative methods and the radiographic results of the femoral tunnels were compared. Results: Femoral tunnel was made more easily at more oblique anatomic point in group II than in group I. In group II, better visual field was achieved at the angle of 100? flexion of the knee joint, the risks of the posterior cortical breakage and the tunnel-graft mismatching were reduced more, and the divergence of femoral interference screw from the radiograph decreased more than in group I(p<0.05). The angle between the femoral tunnel and the longitudinal axis of ACL increased in group II. Conclusion: Anteromedial portal technique was useful for femoral tunneling toward 10 to 10:30 o'clock(in the right knee) and 2 to 1:30 o'clock(in the left knee) in ACL reconstruction. Level of Evidence:Level III, case-control study.
To realize futuristic services with agility, the role of the experimental facility (i.e., testbed) based on integrated resources has become important, so that developers can flexibly utilize the dynamic provisioning power of software-defined networking and cloud computing. Following this trend, an OpenFlow-based SDN testbed environment, denoted as OF@TEIN, connects multiple sites with unique SmartX Racks (i.e., virtualization-enabled converged resources). In this paper, in order to automate the multi-point L2 (i.e., Ethernet) inter-connection of OpenFlow islands, we introduce an automated tool to configure the required Network Virtualization using Generic Routing Encapsulation (NVGRE) tunneling. With the proposed automation tool, the operators can efficiently and quickly manage network inter-connections among multiple OpenFlow sites, while letting developers to control their own traffic flows for service realization experiments.

A number of highway projects are in progress in Korea to accommodate increasing transportation demands. As the highway route becomes more complex, some projects include tunneling through unconsolidated sedimentary rock. Since an unconsolidated sedimentary rock mainly consists of rock and ground mass, the behavior and characteristics in unconsolidated sedimentary rock tunnel are quite different from typical rock tunnel. However, construction case histories and rock classifications method on unconsolidated sedimentary rock tunnel had not been developed or studied domestically. Consequently the case studies and rock classification system for unconsolidated sedimentary rock are required to better understand its behavior for tunneling. In this study, rock mass classification method is proposed to identify unconsolidated sedimentary rock based on point load and slake durability tests. Based on this, the proposed method of unconsolidated sedimentary rock can be applied well through comparisons with the results of convergence measurement.
