This study is as for shale that attract recently geotechnical engineer more and more. like sedimentary rocks and metamorpic rocks, shales have many problem with anisotropy for stength and deformation and they have many problems with quick weathering progress and differential weathering of alternate bedding. In foreign countries, many renowned schalors, like Jaeger(1960),McLamore,Gray(1967),Donath(1972),Nova(1980),Hoek&Brown(1980),Ranamurthy(1985), have already studied for a variety of characteristic and announced high level results of their studies. In domestic also, there are many scholars who have announced high level research papers for shale. this study is a part of these stream. and this study not only analyzed strength anisotropy characteristic along with direction of testing(two-direction) by using point-load test(log-log method) but also compared uniaxial strength between the maximum saturated and dried condition. In this study, we also conducted slaking test. these results of slaking test show weathering characteristic of shales. also, we made the most of field data that obtained during slope stability project and we noticed that RQD measured in the field is much differ from drilled core RQD. In order to come close two different value or access to reality, we suggest new RQD method that artificially reduce RQD by separating core with light hand force.

Rippability refers to the ease of excavation by construction equipment. Since it is related to rock quality in terms of hardness and fracture density, which may be measured by seismic refraction surveys, correlations have been made between rippability and seismic P wave velocities. The 1-channel signal enhancement seismograph(Bison, Model 1570C) was used to measure travel time of the seismic wave through the ground, from the source to the receiver. The seismic velocity measurement was conducted with 153 lines at 5 rock slopes of Chungbuk Youngdong area. Schmidt rebound hardness test were conducted with 161 points on rock masses and the point load test also on 284 rock samples. The uniaxial compressive strength and seismic wave velocity of 60 rock specimens were measured in laboratory. These data were used to evaluate the rock quality of 5 rock slopes.
Statement of problem : Fracture of composite resin core will be occulted by progress of crack. Bonding interface of different materials has large possibility of starting point of crack line. Therefore, the bond strength of glass fiber post to composite resin core is important for prevention of fracture. Purpose: This in vitro study tried to find out how to get the higher strength of glass fiber post to composite resin core through surveying the maximum load that fractures the post and cote complex. Materials and methods: 40 specimens made with glass fiber Posts(Style $post^{(R)}$, Metalor, Swiss) and composite resin core ($Z-100^{(R)}$, 3M, USA) were prepared and loaded to failure with push-out type shear-bond strength test in a universal test machine. The maximum fracture load and fracture mode were investigated in the specimens that were restored with four different surface treatments. With the data. ANOVA test was used to validate the significance between the test groups, and Bonferroni method was used to check if there is any significant statistical difference between each test group. Evely analysis was approved with 95% reliance. Results: On measuring the maximum fracture load of specimens, both the treatments of sandblasted and acid-etched one statistically showed the strength increase rather than the control group (p<0.005). The scanning electric microscope revealed that sand blasting made more micro-retention form not only on the resin matrix but on the glass fiber, and acid-etching contributed to increase in surface retention form, eliminated the inorganic particles in resin matrix. Specimen fracture modes investigation represented that sand blasted groups showed lower bonding failure than no-sand blasted groups. Conclusion: Referring to the values of maximum fracture load of specimens, the bonding strength was increased by sand blasting and acid-etching.
It is important to evaluate rock strength in order to check stability of a rock slope or to design a structure built on rock. However, test methods used for the evaluation have some difficulties since rock samples provide various deviation of strength due to micro cracks in the samples and teat errors, Also, reliable data have not been accumulated for the rock strength in Korea. Therefore, simple teat methods that can be used easily for investication of rock strength in field or in laboratory are not provided sufficiently yet. This study is to investigate variation of the rock strength due to the degree of weathering and to evaluate the degree of weathering by types of rocks, by using data that have been obtained for several years. Therefore, it is possible to provide a relationship between several rock strength values by performing tests such as uniaxial compression teat, point load test, schmidt hammer teat, absorption ratio best and slaking durability tests. The equations of relationships that can be used to estimate rock strength by using simple test methods in field and in laboratory are proposed.
Though extensive research has been carried out for the ultimate strength of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) members under static and cyclic load, there was only limited information on the applied analysis models. Modeling of the inelastic response of SRC members can be accomplished by using a microcosmic model. However, generally used microcosmic model, which usually contains a group of parameters, is too complicated to apply in the nonlinear structural computation for large whole buildings. The intent of this paper is to develop an effective modeling approach for the reliable prediction of the inelastic response of SRC columns. Firstly, five SRC columns were tested under cyclic static load and constant axial force. Based on the experimental results, normalized trilinear skeleton curves were then put forward. Theoretical equation of normalizing point (ultimate strength point) was built up according to the load-bearing mechanism of RC columns and verified by the 5 specimens in this test and 14 SRC columns from parallel tests. Since no obvious strength deterioration and pinch effect were observed from the load-displacement curve, hysteresis rule considering only stiffness degradation was proposed through regression analysis. Compared with the experimental results, the applied analysis model is so reasonable to capture the overall cyclic response of SRC columns that it can be easily used in both static and dynamic analysis of the whole SRC structural systems.
Many attempts have been made to determine the uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of regular specimens of rock indirectly. But little experimental work has been done to find above two parameters using Brazilian test value up to date. This paper employs Brazilian test value to estimate uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of sedimentary (sand stone, shale) and metamorphic (gneiss) rocks. High reliability of Brazilian test has been supported by the established conclusions drawn from point load test and Schmidt hammer strike values. It has also been found that this method can be applied easily and rapidly to the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rock cores when direct tests are not available.
This study explores the long-term decline in the uniaxial compressive strength of Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) by preparing a sample with a 1:1 mixing ratio of CLSM and water. Uniaxial compressive strength tests were conducted after 7 and 28 days of curing. The results revealed that the compressive strength at 28 days was reduced by a factor of 2.85 compared to that at 7 days. Additionally, when expansion was introduced under the same mixing conditions, there was a significant reduction in compressive strength. Point load strength tests based on 7 and 28 days of curing indicated a disparity of 29.27 to 58.76 and 48.19 to 95.13 times, respectively, between the point load strength and the uniaxial compressive strength at 7 days. The differences observed in the findings of this study compared to previous studies may be attributed to variations in the precision of the test method and the sample production process. Therefore, it is essential to establish clear testing methods to accurately evaluate CLSM.

This study is performed to verify the effect of CSA expansive additives for concrete by material properties test and 4 point-bendig test of RC slabs. The result shows that the variations of compress strength, bending strength, and modulus of elasticity of expansive concrete are the same as those of plain concrete. And the crack load of RC slabs with expansive concrete are increased in comparision with that of plain concrete, but the ultimate strength of RC slabs with expansive concrete is decreased.
Thermal shock test methods and thermal shock parameters for ceramics were reviewed from the following viewpoints: (1) The test methods should be based on the precise estimation of both temperature and thermal stress distributions in a specimen taking into account the temperature-dependent thermo-mechanical properties; (2) The thermal shock parameters must be defined as a physical property of the materials and described as a function of temperature at the fracture point of the specimen; (3) The relation between the strength and fracture toughness of brittle ceramics under a thermal shock load must be the same as the relation under a mechanical load. In addition, appropriate thermal shock parameters should be defined by the thermal shock strength and thermal shock fracture toughness based on stress and energy criteria, respectively. A constant heat flux method is introduced as a testing technique suitable for estimating these thermal shock parameters directly from the electric power charged.
This article presents a research study, with both laboratory and field tests, of a deep foundation in a markedly anisotropic medium. Particularly it has focused on the evaluation of the behavior of a pile, one meter in diameter, embedded in a rocky environment with difficult conditions, in the Flysch of the Spanish city of San Sebastián. To carry out the research, the site of a bridge over the Urumea River was chosen, which was supported by pre-excavated reinforced concrete piles. 4 borings were carried out, by the rotation and washing method, with continuous sampling and combined with flexible dilatometer tests. In the field, an Osterberg load test (O-cell) was performed, while in the laboratory, determinations of natural moisture, natural unit weight, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), point load strength (PLS), compressive wave propagation velocity (Vc) and also triaxial and direct shear tests were carried out. The research results indicate the following: a) the empirical functions that correlate the UCS with the PLS are not always linear; b) for the studied Flysch it is possible to obtain empirical functions that correlate the UCS with the PLS and with the Vc; c) the bearing capacity of the studied Flysch is much greater than if it is evaluated by different load capacity theories; d) it is possible to propose an empirical function that allows evaluating the mobilized shear strength (τm), as a function of the UCS and the displacement relative of the pile (δr).
