Due to pronounced mechanical performance and being environmental friendly, aqueous polymer isocyanate adhesive (API) has been widely applied in the production of formaldehyde-free wood products. In this study, flame retardant formaldehyde-free plywood was prepared by incorporation of flame retardants into the API adhesive. Partially phosphorylated poly (vinyl alcohol) (PPVA) which was prepared by reacting poly (vinyl alcohol) with phosphoric acid was used to replace PVA in API formula. In addition, Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) was chosen as additive flame retardant, replacing traditional filler CaCO3 in API adhesive formula. And then, the flame retardant API adhesive with main agent (PPVA replacing PVA70wt.%, SBR emulsion 30wt.%), curing agent 10wt.% (accounts for of the main agent), and 20wt.% LDHs (accounts of the main agent) was used to prepare flame retardant plywood. The effect of application of PPVA and Mg-Al LDH on bonding strength of plywood was investigated. The flammability characteristics of the plywood were determined by cone calorimeter test (CCT). The results revealed that compared with the plywood prepared with API adhesive, the use of PPVA and LDH enhanced the flame retardancy of plywood without negatively affecting bonding strength. The CCT tests indicated that the heat release and smoke production flame retardant API plywood were lower than those of the ordinary API glued plywood. Promising developments for flame retardant API adhesive were expected in future applications of flame retardant formaldehyde-free plywood.
A low density polyethylene(LDPE) was examined as an additive in phenol-formaldehyde(PF) resin adhesive for bonding radiata pine plywood. The LDPE was supplied by the commercial manufacturer. The LDPE was compared to a commercial filler commonly used in structural plywood adhesives in the United States. The adhesive mixes were made by following the recommended procedure of Georgia-Pacific Resins Inc.. using plywood-type PF resin. A total of 48 three-ply plywoods. 6.3 mm nominal thickness and 30 by 30 em in size, were made at two press times (4 and 5 min). two press temperatures (150 and $160^{\circ}C$) and 30 minute assembly times for four adhesive mixing types. Evaluations of the LDPE addition were carried out by performance tension shear tests after two cycle boil aging tests on plywood per the U.S. Product Standard PS I-83. After accelerated-aging tests. plywoods were exhibited no delamination. The test results included tension shear strength and estimated wood failure values. The plywood test results support the use of polyethylene as an additive in plywood adhesives.
A residue from the newsprint waste was investigated as a filler in adhesive for bonding southern pine plywood. The residue was prepared by drying the wet residue to 8% moisture content and grinding the dry material using a laboratory Wiley mitt with a 75-${\mu}m$(200-mesh) screen. The residue was compared to a commercial filler commonly used in structural plywood adhesives. A total of 48 three-ply panels. 12.7mm nominal thickness and 0.3 by 0.3 m in size, were fabricated at two press times(4 and 5 min) and three assembly times(20, 40 and 60 min). Evaluations of the residue were carried out by performance tension shear tests after two 4-hour boil accelerated aging tests on plywood. The test results included tension shear strength and estimated wood failure values. All plywood made with the residue filler were comparable to the control-bonded plywood. These results indicate that residue from the newsprint waste streams would be suitable as filler for plywood adhesives.
This study was carried out to examine properties of water resistant plywood by using serum protein adhesive which is natural, environment-friendly and human-friendly. For the preparation of the serum protein adhesive, pig blood from slaughterhouse was centrifuged and serum was separated from corpuscles and concentrated to 30% by dry weight basis. This concentrated serum protein was modified with PF resin (50% NVC) with the ratio of 9 : 2.5. Plywood made by this modified serum protein gave 1.21 N/$mm^2$ of dry bonding strength, 0.80 N/$mm^2$ of wet boil bonding strength, 0% of cyclic delamination test value, and 0.025 ppm of HCHO emission, which met the excellent super $E_0$ grade and water resistant plywood.
The influence of the adhesive force test conditions on the resultant adhesive force was measured using a chloroprene rubber as an adhesive and a plywood as an adherent. It was clarified from the experiments which adhesive force test conditions could influence strongly the adhesive force. After this, the constant values neccessary as the test conditions of the adhesive force in making generally a test of the adhesive force determined.
This experiment was executed to investigate the effect of activation of veneer surface by oxidizing agents, hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid, on bonding characteristics of Malas(Homalium foetidum Benth) plywood, in which the effects of these oxidizing agents amount, pretreatment time, and pressing time and temperatue on shear strength of the plywood were examined and discussed. In this research the activation of veneer surface by oxidants was effective in raising shear strength but the difference in shear strength was not observed between hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid treatment. Hydrogen peroxide treatment, however, seemed to be more profitable to industrial application because of its lower concentration and easier handling than nitric acid. The bonding method by lignin-phenol adhesive through surface activation revealed inferior shear strength to phenol- and urea-formaldehyde adhesive but superior water resistance to urea-formaldehyde adhesive and this bonding method, in addition, have the advantage of lower cost compared with phenol-formaldehyde adhesive, Therefore, this bonding method by lignin-phenol adhesive through surface activation seemed to economical in manufacturing of water-resistant wood panel materials in future.
This study was carried out to examine the effect of aluminium sulfate addition to the alkali-acid catalyst phenolic resin for the manufacture of the kapur (Dryobalanops spp.) plywood on the reduction of phenolic resin spreading. On the manufacture of plywood, Adhesive Contents such as 50g/$m^2$, 75g/$m^2$ and 150g/$m^2$ were treated. The spreading adhesive content of 50g/$m^2$ and 75g/$m^2$ had been controlled to about 150g/$m^2$ added with the water in order to get sufficient spreading and controlled to pH 4.5 with aluminium sulfate [$Al_2(SO_4)_3$]. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Specific gravities of air dried plywood manufactured from each adhesive ranged from 0.77 to 0.86 and their moisture contents met the KS requirements. 2. In dry and wet shear strengths, 150 $P_{Al{\cdot}Ac}$ adhesive showed the highest and 75 $P_{Al{\cdot}Ac{\cdot}Am}$ adhesive indicated higher value than 150 $P_{Al{\cdot}Ac}$ adhesive. 3. In case of glue shear strength after boiling test, 150 $P_{Al{\cdot}Ac}$ adhesive was the best and adding of aluminium sulfate was not effective on reinforcement of boiling water resistance of phenolic resin, but met KS requirements. 4. 75 $P_{Al{\cdot}Ac{\cdot}Am}$ adhesive showed the good shear strength and met KS requirements. Therefore, adding of aluminium sulfate was very efficient for economical plywood manufacture.
Residues such as walnut, pinenut and peanut shells were used as a filler in adhesive for bonding radiata pine plywood. The nutshell residues were prepared by simply drying to 8% moisture content and grinding the dry material using a laboratory Wiley mill with a $75{\mu}m$ (200 mesh) screen. The nutshells residues were compared to a commercial filler commonly used in adhesives by the structural plywood and laminated veneer lumber industry in the United States. The adhesive mixes were made by following the recommended procedure of Georgia-Pacific Resins, Inc., using phenol-formaldehyde resin. For each filler type, three-ply plywoods, 6 mm nominal thickness and 30 by 30 cm in size, were fabricated at two press times (4 and 5 min) and around 30 minute assembly time. Evaluations of the nutshell residues were carried out by tension shear tests after cyclic boil tests on plywood. The results of the performance test included tension shear strength and wood failure. All plywoods made with the nutshell fillers were comparable to those made with the control filler. These results indicate that nutshell residues would be suitable as filler for plywood adhesives.
Water soluble urea-melamine-phenol copolymer adhesive manufactured with 80 percent of urea resin contents was manufactured by different molar ratio for a high temperature curing type, and their properties and strengthes were examined through manufactures of plywood with Kapur (Dryobalanops spp.) veneers. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Specific gravities of air dried plywood manufactured from each adhesive ranged from 0.78 to 0.84 and their moisture contents met the KS requirement. 2. In dry and wet shear strength, $U_{80}M_{10}P_{10}$ copolymer resin showed the highest value and urea resin was the lowest, indicating that melamine and phenol were effective for increasing glue shear strength of urea resin. 3. In case of glue shear strength after boiling test, phenolic resin was the nest and melamine was not so effective as phenol on reinforcement of boiling water resistance of urea resin.
