  • The global electrical energy consumption is still rising and there is a steady demand to increase the power capacity, to produce, distribute and use the energy as0 efficient as possible and furthermore to set up incentives to save energy at the md-user. Two major technologies will play important roles to fulfill those targets. One is to change the electrical power production sources from the conventional, fossil (and short term) based energy sources to renewable energy resources. The other is to use high efficiency power electronics in power systems for high efficiency and high performance applications. This paper discusses both areas, in particular the power electronic application in wind power integration.

  • Observations in beach, intertidal and upper subtidal environments in Peter the Great Bay (north-western East Sea) have shown that attached algae were found on empty shells of 13 species of epifaunal and infaunal bivalve mollusks. Thirteen algae species were identified on empty dislodged shells but more than 50 species are known to be epibiotic on living bivalves. The dislodgement of shells with attached algae takes place in semi-enclosed, low-energy areas, as well as those which are open and affected by strong wave action, indicating the large scale of this phenomenon. The significance of seaweed transportation of living mollusks and their empty shells in the coastal zone, involving both taphonomic and ecological processes, is stressed. Algae appear to be a taphonomic agent and play a similar role as compared to birds or hermit crabs, but they act passively and contribute to environmental mixing in death assemblages in coastal environments.

  • This work was designed for the Green Fund Aid 2004 of Korea Forest Service. It won the prize and has been constructed. We can have an opportunity to play a leading role in improving partnership with participation of local communities, promoting environmental education, and enhancing the environmental quality by constructing biotops in urban areas where energy flow in the ecosystem is not balanced. This design includes 'citizen participation process' and 'local community partnership' that is expected to promote local community participation in the process of design. This work suggests that biotope construction with citizen involvement and community partnership plays an important role not only in design items but also in the revitalization of local community. This sort of design process could not be fully achieved without cooperation with stakeholders - environmental specialists, local authorities, relevant societies, schools, teachers, parents of students.

  • Recently, upwelling of anoxic bottom water mass have been frequently observed in northeast part of Tokyo Bay in Japan during summer to autumn. Since the colour of water surface becomes milkyblue or milkygeen, the upwelling phenomenon Is called 'Blue Tide'. The data analysis of field surveys during 'Blue Tide' appearance have been performed for understanding the physical features of the 'Blue Tide' phenomena In Tokyo Bay. It becomes clear that (1) the formation of the anoxic bottom water correlates well with the temperature difference between the surface and bottom waters, (21 there are two necessary conditions for generating 'Blue Tide': that Is, strong stratincation and off-shore wind. The strong southwest(on-shored wand before the 'Blue Tide' appearance may play an iniportant role to make the striancation strengthen. When these conditions are larger and the northeast or east-northeast (off-shored wind stronger than S ifs blows In succession, the 'Blue Tide' upwelling appears at the head of Tokyo Bay.

  • This review aims to introduce the basic neurobiological aspects of dream. There have been long debates on whether the neurobiology of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is identical to that of dream. However, many theories on dream are based on the findings of REM sleep. Bizarre cognition and intense emotion in dream have been suggested to derive from physiological (e.g. desynchronized gamma oscillation and postsynaptic inhibition), chemical (e.g. decreased noradrenalin and serotonin, increased acetylcholine and modulation of dopamine), anatomical (e.g. deactivation of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and activation of limbic and paralimbic areas) change in REM sleep. In addition, dream has been suggested to play its neurobiological roles. Processing of negative emotion may be one of the functions of dream. Dream is also supposed to consolidate memory, especially semantic memory. Despite a number of hypotheses and debates, the neurobiological mechanism of dream generation has not been concluded.

  • An IT system within a company play increasingly important role as a significant part of corporate assets. The IT system possesses an extraordinary ability to improve an organization's efficiency, effectiveness and productivity by providing competitive advantages and improving strategic business decision capabilities. Indeed, providing a more secure IT environment, improving employee productivity and enhancing business process and strategic decision capabilities are key areas to improve corporate performance. However, existing research on IT ROI of return on IT investments does not provide solid justification to stakeholders. In this paper, we analyze the IT investment during the past 28 years from 1982 to 2009 and present the results in two dimensions. First, we show the IT solution implementation analysis by years and industries based on 1,240 IT success cases from 8 different sources such as major Korea IT newspaper, IT magazines, and IT vendors. Then, the paper presents the relationship between IT capability through IT success cases and corporate business performance among 32 industries.

  • The teaching of pronunciation is one of the areas in which linguistic phonetics can play an extremely useful role. This paper is concerned with the application of the results of my phonetic research to the actual teaching of Korean standard pronunciation with special reference to speech rhythm. It has been found that Korean words and utterances of various lengths are pronounced in standard Korean with one of the four main rhythmic patterns, each containing a strong stress. Unless we get the rhythmic patterns right in pronouncing Korean words and utterances, therefore, the resulting pronounciation is bound to sound dialectal or incorrect and in many instances even unintelligible to listeners. Hence the undeniable need to devise a useful technique to teach the Korean speech rhythm in a systematic way. In this paper each of the four main rhythmic patterns is presented and elaborated with sample examples taken from the living Korean. It is hoped that these examples of words and utterances can be used at the same time as useful pronunciation drill material not only for Koreans with dialectal background but also for foreign learners of Korean.

  • The quality of building space program is a key to measure how the building performance satisfies its owner and users. However assuring its efficiency requires reliable criteria that reflect high level experience knowledge in the field. This study suggests a plan to gauge the level of building space performance using expert knowledge, which has not been utilized well enough but should play a critical role. In order to setup an expert system measuring level of the space program, we firstly optimized the space areas to the best case in a knowledgebase and use them as criteria to judge the quality of the spaces extracted from BIM model. We found the experimental results show us a promising way of measuring a relative quality of the space programs.

  • The terrestrial/satellite hybrid network may replace or supply the terrestrial network in some areas or certain application. Futhermore, it can play an important role in the development of B-ISDN due to their features of flexible wide coverage, independent of ground distances and geographical constraints, multiple access and multipoint broadcast. Also, satellite have the capability to supply terrestrial ATM and B-ISDN with flexible links for access networks as well as trunk networks. This paper describes the design and verification of the interworking protocol between terrestrial B-ISDN and satellite network. For the verification, the designed interworking protocol is modeled by Petri-net and analyzed by reachability tree.

  • Rice Fields have provided large areas of open water for centuries in regions with a variety of rice-growing cultures, and, in addition to producing rice also provide other animal and/or plant food sources and medicinal plants, thus acting as wetland systems and helping to sustain livelihoods and human well-being in these regions. Also rice fields in many parts of the world support important wetland biodiversity, such as reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustacean, insects and mollusca, and play a significant ole in water-bird flyways and the conservation of water-bird populations. The purpose of this study is to find a way conservation of rice fields in connection with paddies's laws, for example, amend the Conservation of Wetlands Law or legislate for the conservation of paddies.
