This paper presents the free vibration analysis of a circular plate with a concentric square hole. The boundary condition is the edge of the square hole is free and the outer circular plate is simply supported. Due to the geometric abnormality, this analysis does not permit an exact solution. The present problem deals with the numerical calculation of the natural frequencies and mode shapes of vibration of the structure by independent coordinate coupling method(ICCM). The numerical results show the efficacy of the ICCM and changes in natural frequencies and modes due to the square hole size.
A new method for free nitration analysis using series functions is proposed to obtain the eigenvalues of arbitrarily shaped, polygonal plates with clamped edges. Since a general solution used in the method satisfies the equation of motion for the transverse vibration of a plate, the method offers very accurate eigenvalues, compared to FEM or BEM results. In addition, the method can minimize the amount of numerical calculation because it has the advantage of not needing to divide the plate of interest. Two case studies show that the proposed method is valid and accurate when the eigenvalues by the proposed method are compared to those by FEM (NASTRAN) or another analytical method.
In this study, a cavitation occurrence in a piston-pump inlet was investigated by simulating the pressure distribution, according to the inlet shape of a variable-displacement swash-plate piston pump that supplies high-pressure oil to control the hydraulic system of a marine engine. Two types of pump inlets with different shapes were cast into impression models, and the models were reverse-engineered by 3D scanning. Then, the hydraulic-pressure distribution was analyzed through finite-element analysis. The results of the analysis confirmed that cavitation occurs more easily in the inlet with a steeper slope during pump operation because the inlet pressure on the valve plate is lower than that of the other pump with a gentler inlet slope.
In this paper, a tie-plate shape is optimized by using the numerical technique to reduce the stray load loss of the tie-plate which is a mechanical structure for assembling and supporting of the transformer core. The eddy current loss of the structure is calculated by an electromagnetic field FEM program and the results are compared with 4 different shapes of tie-plates. Since the thickness of the tie-plate is very thin, and the skin depth is very small, the number of FE elements for 3-D transformer model is too big to solve. So, the surface impedance boundary condition (SIBC) is used to reduce the system matrix size and its computing time. To verify the method a 2.5 MVA 22,900/380V distribution transformer is simulated using one objective function and three design variables with some constraints. The final optimized tie-plate has three slots of 6 mm width and 23 mm gap, and the loss is reduced by 75 %. Consequently, the proposed algorithm seems to be considerably applicable to electric machinery as well as power transformer.
Cross rolling process is one of incremental forming processes to form an axi-symmetric shaped metal component. It can be classified into two types according to the shape of dies, which are a drum type (roll type) and a plate type (straight type). It can also be classified into a wedge type and a ramp type processes according to deformation characteristics of a material. The ramp type die is applied to plate type cross rolling process in cold forming process for forming of teeth of gear or bolt, while the wedge type die is generally utilized to drum type and plate type cross rolling processes in hot forming process. A shape of the ramp type die is usually same as final shape of a product at every section of a progressing direction, while the shape of the wedge type die has different shapes in a progressing direction. In this paper, a rolling of neck part in a ball stud component has been carried out using the plate type cross rolling process with a ramp shaped die. Forming characteristics have been performed using finite element analysis in order to obtain a proper preform for the ramp type plate cross rolling process.
In this paper, a novel and effective damage diagnosis algorithm is proposed to detect and estimate damage using two stages least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) and limited number of attached sensors on structures. In the first stage, LS-SVM1 is used to predict the unmeasured mode shapes data based on limited measured modal data and in the second stage, LS-SVM2 is used to predicting the damage location and severity using the complete modal data from the first-stage LS-SVM1. The presented methods are applied to a three story irregular frame and cantilever plate. To investigate the noise effects and modeling errors, two uncertainty levels have been considered. Moreover, the performance of the proposed methods has been verified through using experimental modal data of a mass-stiffness system. The obtained damage identification results show the suitable performance of the proposed damage identification method for structures in spite of different uncertainty levels.
Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the stress distribution in the bone and the displacement distribution of the miniscrew under orthopedic force with two different types of miniplate design as skeletal anchorage for orthopedic treatment. Materials and methods: Finite element models were made for 6-hole miniplate (0.8mm in thickness), which were designed in two different shapes-one is curvilinear shaped (C plate, Jeil Medical Co., Korea) and another, Y shaped (Y plate), fixed with 3 pieces of miniscrew 2mm-diameter and 6mm-long respectively. A traction force of 4 N was applied in $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ to imaginary axis connecting two unfixed distalmost holes of the miniplate. Results: The maximum von Mises stress in the bone was much greater in the cortical portion rather than in the cancellous portion. C plate showed greater maximum von Mises stress in the cortical bone than Y plate. The maximum displacement of the miniscrew was greater in C plate than Y plate. The more increased the angle of the applied orthopedic force, the greater maximum von Mises stress in the bone and maximum displacement of the miniscrew. It was observed that in C plate, the von Mises stress in the bone and displacement of the miniscrew were distributed around the distalmost screw-fixed area. Conclusions: The results suggest that Y plate should have the advantage over C plate and in the placement of the miniplate, its imaginary axis should be placed as parallel as possible to the direction of orthopedic force to obtain its primary stability.
In this paper, a simple two-step method for structural vibration-based health monitoring for beam-like structures have been extended to plate-like structures with though-thickness cracks. Crack locations and severities of plate-like structures are detected using a hybrid approach. The interval wavelet transform is employed to extract crack singularity locations from mode shape and support vector regression (SVR) is applied to predict crack serviettes form crack severity detection database (the relationship of natural frequencies and crack serviettes) using several natural frequencies as inputs. Of particular interest is the natural frequencies estimation for cracked plate-like structures using Rayleigh quotient. Only the natural frequencies and mode shapes of intact structures are needed to calculate the natural frequencies of cracked plate-like structures using a simple formula. The crack severity detection database can be easily obtained with this formula. The hybrid method is investigated using numerical simulation and its validity of the usage of interval wavelet transform and SVR are addressed.
