In recent years, Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) strengthening is found to be one of the best methods to strengthen steel structures. The fibrous bond can also influence the vibration characteristics of the strengthened element apart from its static strength enhancement property. The main objective of this study is to understand the influence of CFRP strengthening on the dynamic Behaviour of Thin-Webbed Castellated Beams (TWCBs). A detailed experimental investigation was carried out on five sets of beams with varying parameters such as domination of shear (Shear Dominant, Moment Dominant and Moment and Shear Dominant), sectional classification (Plastic and Semi-compact) and perforation geometries (ho/dwratio 0.65 and e/ho ratio 0.3). Free vibration analysis was carried out by exciting the simply supported TWCBs with an impact force generated by a ball dropped from a specific height. Logarithmic decrement method was used to obtain the damping ratio and natural frequencies of vibration were found by Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Natural frequency showed an increase in a range of 10.5 - 55% for the different sets of castellated beams. An increase of 62.30% was noted in the damping ratio of TWCBs after strengthening which is an indication of improvement in the vibration characteristics of the beam.

As internal and external seismic experiment results, the seismic performance of RC bridge piers is largely dependent on the ratio of lap-spliced bars to all longitudinal reinforcing bars in plastic hinge regions, and confining effects of transverse reinforcements. Capacity and displacement ductility of non-seismically designed existing RC piers are reduced by lap splices in plastic hinge regions. The provision for the lap splice of longitudinal reinforcing bars was not specified in KBDS (Korean Bridge Design Specifications) before the implementation of 1992 seismic design code, but the ratio of lap-spliced bars to all longitudinal reinforcing bars in plastic hinge regions is restricted to 50% in the 2005 version of KBDS. This paper presents a seismic assessment of RC piers at lap-splicing ratios of 0%, 50%, and 100%. Through a comparison of experimental and analytic results of RC piers, we introduce an appropriate ultimate strain of confined concrete in plastic hinge regions with lap-splices, and propose a method for estimating displacement ductility ratios of non-seismically designed existing RC piers using fiber element analysis.

Background: Elastic ear cartilage is a good source of tissue for support or augmentation in plastic and reconstructive surgery. However, the amount of ear cartilage is limited and excessive use of cartilage can cause deformation of the auricular framework. This animal study investigated the potential of periosteal chondrogenesis in an ear cartilage defect model. Methods: Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were used in the present study. Four ear cartilage defects were created in both ears of each rabbit, between the central artery and marginal veins. The defects were covered with perichondrium (group 1), periosteum taken from the calvarium (group 2), or periosteum taken from the tibia (group 3). No coverage was performed in a control group (group 4). All animals were sacrificed 6 weeks later, and the ratio of neo-cartilage to defect size was measured. Results: Significant chondrogenesis occurred only in group 1 (cartilage regeneration ratio: mean±standard deviation, 0.97±0.60), whereas the cartilage regeneration ratio was substantially lower in group 2 (0.10±0.11), group 3 (0.08±0.09), and group 4 (0.08±0.14) (p= 0.004). Instead of chondrogenesis, osteogenesis was observed in the periosteal graft groups. No statistically significant differences were found in the amount of osteogenesis or chondrogenesis between groups 2 and 3. Group 4 showed fibrous tissue accumulation in the defect area. Conclusion: Periosteal grafts showed weak chondrogenic potential in an ear cartilage defect model of rabbits; instead, they exhibited osteogenesis, irrespective of their embryological origin.

This paper assesses the suitability of existing standards for plastic material models and performance level evaluation methods in seismic performance evaluations of concrete dam piers during Maximum Credible Earthquakes (MCE). Dynamic plastic analysis was conducted to examine the applicability of the plastic material model under various conditions. As a result reveal that when the minimum reinforcement ratio is not met, the average stress-average strain method recommended in current dam seismic performance evaluation guidelines tends to underestimate pier responses compared to the predicted outcomes of dynamic elastic analysis. Consequently, the paper proposes an improvement plan that treats dam piers with an insufficient minimum reinforcement ratio as unreinforced and integrates fracture energy into concrete tensile behavior characteristics for performance level evaluation. Implementing these improvements can lead to more conservative evaluation outcomes compared to current seismic performance evaluation methods.

Excessive use of plastic bottles contributes to a significant environmental issue due to the high volume of plastic waste generated. To address this, efforts are needed to reduce the weight of plastic bottles. However, indiscriminate weight reduction may compromise the essential rigidity required for plastic bottles. Extensive research on rib shape for pressure vessels are exists, but there is a few research of rib shapes to enhance the stiffness of plastic bottles. The following results were obtained from the analyses conducted in this study. 1) Among the rib cross-sections of square, trapezoid, and triangle, the buckling critical load of PET bottles with square-shaped ribs is improved by about 14% compared to the buckling critical load of PET bottles without ribs. 2) The buckling critical load is improved by about 18% when a square-shaped rib with an aspect ratio of 0.2 is applied, compared to the buckling critical load of the bottle without the rib. 3) When longitudinal and transverse square ribs were applied to the axial direction of the PET bottle, the buckling critical load was improved by about 32% and 58% compared to the buckling critical load of the PET bottle without ribs, respectively, indicating that applying longitudinal ribs is effective in reinforcing the stiffness of PET bottles. 4) When 14 transverse ribs were applied, the maximum improvement was about 48% compared to the buckling critical load of the plastic bottle without ribs. 5) When 3 longitudinal ribs were applied on each side, the maximum improvement was about 76% compared to the buckling critical load of the bottle without ribs. Therefore, it was concluded that for effective stiffness reinforcement of a 500ml square bottle with a thickness of 0.5mm, 3 square-shaped ribs with an aspect ratio of 0.2 should be applied in the longitudinal direction relative to the axial direction of the bottle.
We identified pyrolysis condition, effect of catalyzer and pyrolysis mechanism through contact decomposed method by adding Bentonite in waste plastic of hospital solid waste. The result from this study were summarized as the followings: 1. The optimum fuel oil were obtained when hospital wasted plastic (P.P) and Bentonite were mixed in the ratio of 30:1. 2. Maximum absorption wave of hospital wasted plastic (P.P) appeared at 2900cm$^{-1}$, 1480cm$^{-1}$, 1360cm$^{-1}$ and 1180 cm$^{-1}$ by FT-IR and the plastics were identified and confirmed. 3. Reaction temperature of hospital wasted plastic started at 360$\circ$C, proceed rapidly at 437.5$\circ$C and finished at 481$\circ$C. The residue was 0.729%. When bentonire was added started at 318$\circ$C, proceed rapidly at 399.5$\circ$C and finished at 449.3$\circ$C, the residue being 4.23%. 4. Pyrolysis products of hospital wasted plastic were about 90 kinds. The Main components were 2-Heptene-3-ethyl-4-trimethyl (27.4%), 1-Heptene-2-isobutyl-6-methyl (8.6%) and 1-Heptene decene (7.7%). There was little component difference at different temperature. This is the result from stability of decomposition product. 5. Pyrolysis efficiency increased by the addition Bentonire. 6. Some of the Environmental and Sanitary problems could be solved by the pyrolysis of hospital wasted plastic and the decomposed products were to be used as fuel oil.
Recrystallization technique was applied to analyze plastic strain at the notch tip of coarse grain HAZ in mild steel (SB 41) and high strength steel (SA 588). The notch tip of specimen was deformed by three point bending. Accumulated displacement (Crack Opening Displacement ${delta}t$) by the monotonic and cyclic loading under room temperature and hot strain embrittlement temperature ($250^{\circ}C$) was 0~1.0mm. Recrystallization heat treatment conditions were $650^{circ}C{ imes}3hr$ for SB 41 and $700^{circ}C{ imes}3hr$ for SA 588. The experimental results obtained were as follows ; 1) Distribution of the effective plastic strain at plastic zone was appeared by the function of crack opening displacement, and plastic zone or the effective plastic strain increased with crack opening displacement. 2) Plastic strain at notch tip of HAZ due to accumulated hot strain calculated as follows. .epsilon. over bar $_{p}$ = .epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ (x/ $R_{x}$ ) $^{m}$ (m=0.25) 3) Work hardending ratio of notch tip for hot strain was linearly increased with .epsilon. over bar $_{max}$ and dependent upon the material types.s.

In this study, we used the Monte Carlo N-Particle program to simulate the gamma-ray spectra obtained from plastic scintillators holes filled with bismuth nanoparticles. We confirmed that the incorporation of bismuth nanoparticles into a plastic scintillator enhances its performance for gamma-ray spectroscopy using the subtraction method. The subtracted energy spectra obtained from the bismuth-nanoparticle-incorporated and the original plastic scintillator exhibit a distinct energy peak that does not appear in the corresponding original spectra. We varied the diameter and depth of the bismuth-filled holes to determine the optimal hole design for gamma-ray spectroscopy using the subtraction method. We evaluated the energy resolutions of the energy peaks in the gamma-ray spectra to estimate the effects of the bismuth nanoparticles and determine their optimum volume in the plastic scintillator. In addition, we calculated the peak-to-total ratio of the energy spectrum to evaluate the energy measuring limit of the bismuth nanoparticle-containing plastic scintillator using the subtraction method.
The effects of plastic container vent ratio on fruit quality during strawberry precooling and storage were analyzed. Plastic containers ($520mm{\times}355mm{\times}182mm$) were manufactured with bottom and side vents at areal ratios of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. Fruit was loaded at a volume ratio of 80% prior to pressure cooling and storage at $5^{\circ}C$. The internal fruit temperature was $18^{\circ}C$ and the times taken to attain $2^{\circ}C$ after precooling were 1 hour 9 minutes, 1 hour 13 minutes, 2 hours 2 minutes, and 2 hours 51 minutes at vent ratios of 20%, 15%, 10%, and 5%, respectively. To mimic the current distribution system, precooled strawberries were packaged in tray wrapping and stored at $5^{\circ}C$. Changes in weight, bruising, extent of decay, and firmness, were measured. Weight loss, bruising, and decay were highest at a vent ratio of 20%, lowest at a vent ratio of 15%, and moderate at vent ratios of 5% and 10%. No significant among-treatment difference in fruit firmness was evident.

Background Understanding risk factors that increase readmission rates may help enhance patient education and set system-wide expectations. We aimed to provide benchmark data on causes and predictors of readmission following inpatient plastic surgery. Methods The 2011 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program dataset was reviewed for patients with both "Plastics" as their recorded surgical specialty and inpatient status. Readmission was tracked through the "Unplanned Readmission" variable. Patient characteristics and outcomes were compared using chi-squared analysis and Student's t-tests for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. Multivariate regression analysis was used for identifying predictors of readmission. Results A total of 3,671 inpatient plastic surgery patients were included. The unplanned readmission rate was 7.11%. Multivariate regression analysis revealed a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (odds ratio [OR], 2.01; confidence interval [CI], 1.12- 3.60; P=0.020), previous percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (OR, 2.69; CI, 1.21-5.97; P=0.015), hypertension requiring medication (OR, 1.65; CI, 1.22-2.24; P<0.001), bleeding disorders (OR, 1.70; CI, 1.01-2.87; P=0.046), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class 3 or 4 (OR, 1.57; CI, 1.15-2.15; P=0.004), and obesity (body mass index ${\geq}30$) (OR, 1.43; CI, 1.09-1.88, P=0.011) to be significant predictors of readmission. Conclusions Inpatient plastic surgery has an associated 7.11% unplanned readmission rate. History of COPD, previous PCI, hypertension, ASA class 3 or 4, bleeding disorders, and obesity all proved to be significant risk factors for readmission. These findings will help to benchmark inpatient readmission rates and manage patient and hospital system expectations.
