  • After more than 100 years of development, rotating electric machines are a mature industrial product. Nevertheless, improvements are still possible for specific applications, and it is likely that the major evolution will be promoted by new materials and unconventional structures. Till now, plastic materials are an infrequent choice for the electric machines structural parts, but pioneering applications, such as aeronautical components, let some technological scouting: a low-weight/high-efficiency plastic axial flux motor for a solar flying platform is presented as an example of combined new-material/new-geometry development. The basic design aspects and the prototyping choices are presented and discussed together with the first experimental results.

  • This paper deals with the nonlinear finite element analysis of fibre-reinforced plastic poles. Based on the principle of stationary potential energy and Novozhilov's derivations of nonlinear strains, the formulations for the geometric nonlinear analysis of general shells are derived. The formulations are applied to the fibre-reinforced plastic poles which are treated as conical shells. A semi-analytical finite element model based on the theory of shell of revolution is developed. Several aspects of the implementation of the geometric nonlinear analysis are discussed. Examples are presented to show the applicability of the nonlinear analysis to the post-buckling and large deformation of fibre-reinforced plastic poles.

  • In this work, thin films of amorphous silicon (a-Si) were formed on plastic substrates by sputtering deposition and crystallized using excimer laser irradiation. As the entire process is conducted at room temperature, and the laser irradiation-induced heating is confined to the thin film, the plastic substrate is not subjected to thermal stresses. The microstructure resulting from the laser irradiation was dependent on the laser irradiation energy density and the composition of the underlying buffer layers. It was found that a layer of AlN deposited as a buffer between the plastic and the a-Si film increased the endurance of the a-Si film under laser irradiation, and resulted in polycrystalline Si grains up to 100nm in diameter.

  • The press cutter is productive equipment that practically manufactures materials such as fabrics, papers, films, leathers, rubbers etc. into the desired shapes using cutting method. Plate cutting process is one of the primary energy absorbing mechanisms in a grounding or collision event. The cutting mechanism is complicated and involves plastic flow of plate in the vicinity of the tip, friction between wedge and plate, deformation of plate. In this paper, we studied the effect of friction between cutter and plastic sheet for producing precise and superior products. The press cutter is analyzed numerically using MARC finite element program according to the variation of friction coefficients. The FEM results showed that normal stress, equivalent cauchy stress, normal total strain, equivalent total strain are good when friction coefficient is 0.0 and shear stress, shear total strain are good when friction coefficient is 0.8.

  • The huge amounts of wastes were produced nowadays. Among the solid waste stream, the waste plastic portion is about 20 % in weight, over 50 % in volume. But the most of waste plastics were incinerated or land filled. Only a bit of waste plastics were recycled and reused. On the view point of current energy crisis, this will be an extravagance of beneficial resource. So we should consider the waste plastics as a beneficial raw material. Also need to develop the field of reusing and recycling of post-consumed plastic. In this context, present paper describes the methodology for enhancing or improving the specific properties by way of using inorganic filler waste. Also develop the product from these post-consumed plastic.

  • In this paper, cyclic plasticity model of SM490 TMC was formulated by basing on monotonic loading test and cyclic loading test. For exact description of cyclic performance and plastic deformation capacity of steel member using SM490 TMC, formulated cyclic plasticity model and finite deformation theory were applied to 3-dimensional elastic-plastic FE analysis. Cyclic plastic behavior of pipe-section steel column using SM490 TMC was clarified by carrying out numerical analysis. Also, in order to clarifying seismic performance of pipe-section steel column using SM490 TMC, analysis results were compared with analysis results of pipe-section steel column using SM490. A comparison of analysis results shows that SM490 TMC pipe-section steel column has a better cyclic performance for strength and energy dissipation than SM490 pipe-section steel column under cyclic loading

  • This paper presents strut-and-tie models for predicting shear strength of RC interior beam-column joints considering the plastic hinge rotation of adjacent beams. On seismic design of frame system, it is controlled beams to occur plastic hinges and to be ductile so as to dissipate earthquake energy efficiently. The plastic hinge deformation of beams is used as analysis parameter in terms of strain of beam tensile bars at column face. The shear strengths of beam-column joints are evaluated by combining direct strut mechanism with truss mechanism. It is assumed that the max force transferred by direct strut mechanism is based on the strength of cracked concrete element, and that by truss mechanism is based on bond capacity.

  • Scaled brick masonry panels were tested under cyclic unialxial compression loading to evaluate its deformation characteristics. An envelope stress - strain curves, a common point curves and stability point curves were obtained for various cyclic test conditions. Loops of the stress-strain hysteresis were used to determine the energy dissipation for each cycle. Empirical expressions were proposed for the relations between energy dissipation and envelope and residual strains. These relations indicated that the decay of masonry strength starts at about two-third of peak stress.

  • An experimental investigation on the energy absorption of two staged combined structures is presented, which deals with the plastic collapse test as a series of research on soft bow structure involved in a ship collision. The principle of arithmetic superposition of energy absorption is derived upon experimental analysis and based upon the characteristics of the energy absorptions of component structures. This relationship is related to the further approach toward the design of soft bow.
