Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma by air volume against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). Methods: Plasma generators (TB-300, Shinyoung Airtec, Seongnam-si, Korea) were operated in a 2A type biosafety cabinet. The plasma generator was set to a wind flow rate of 14 ($80m^3/h$), 18 ($110m^3/h$), and 22 ($150m^3/h$), and exposure times were set to 0 hours, 3 hours, 6 hours, 9 hours, and 24 hours. Results: The inhibitory effects of plasma at air volume 14 with prolonged exposure time of three hours was 20%, 64% at six hours, 82.3% at nine hours, and 100% after 24 hours exposure. With air volume of 18, the inhibitory effects upon plasma exposure were 36% for three hours, and 100% from 24 hours. Greater air volume resulted in greater inhibition of tuberculosis bacterial growth. In particular, the maximum inhibitory effect (100%) was shown in air volume of 22 ($150m^3/h$) after three hours of plasma exposure. Conclusions: The results showed the correlating inhibitory effects of plasma on the growth of MTB in combination with increasing plasma exposure time and air volume.
Change of the plasma volume by pulse frequency in a bipolar pulsed DC unbalanced magnetron sputtering was investigated. As increasing the frequency at off duty 10% and at a constant power, the plasma volume was lengthened in vertical direction from the AZO target. When there is an electrically floated substrate, the vertical length of the plasma area was not affected by the pulse frequency. Instead, the diameter of the plasma volume was increased. We found that the temperature rise of a substrate was affected by the pulse frequency, too. As increasing it, the maximum temperature rise of a glass substrate was decreased from $132^{\circ}C\;to\;108^{\circ}C$.
The porosities of PET fibers were investigated using a nitrogen porosimeter according to oxygen plasma treatment and dyeing with a disperse dye, and they were discussed in terms of the change of internal micro-structure of the PET fiber. The total pore volume, surface area and average pore size of the plasma treated PET fibers increased expectably compared with the untreated sample. The PET fibers treated with oxygen plasma and then dyed with a disperse dye were increased significantly in the surface area and the total pore volume comparing with those of plasma treated only, but decreased in the average pore size. The increase of the surface area, after dyeing, of the plasma treated PET fibers was due to addition of the surface area of the dye itself to that of the PET fiber. The increase of the total pore volume of the plasma treated PET fibers by dyeing, which is the opposite result to the general idea that the pore volume of fibers would be reduced by occupation of dye molecules in the pores, could be explained by the free-volume model. This is that the amorphous region in the fiber expanded by occupation of dye molecules, and the marginal space surrounding dyes was generated as many smaller pores, and the decrease of the average pore size of the dyed sample also could be explained The decrease of the average pore size was caused by the splitting of a larger pore into smaller pores.
Recently, much attention has been given to plasma production under liquid and its applications [1]. However, most of plasma production techniques reported so far utilize high voltage dc, ac, rf or microwave power [2], where damage to discharge electrodes and small discharge volume are remained issues. As an alternative of plasma production method under liquid, we have proposed pulsed microwave excited plasma using slot antenna, where damage to the slot electrode can be minimized and plasma volume can be increased. We have also reported improvement of treatment efficiency with use of reduced-pressure condition during the discharge [3]. To realize low pressure conditions in liquid, various alternative technique can be considered. One possible technique is simultaneous injection of microwave power and ultrasonic wave. Ultrasonic wave induces pressure fluctuation with the wave propagation and is so far used for cavitation production in the water. We propose utilization of reduced pressure induced by ultrasonic cavitation for improvement of the plasma production. Correlation between the plasma production and the ultrasonic power will be discussed.
The changes in the red cell volume and the plasma chloride level were measured when the blood $CO_2$ content was altered by equilibration with the atmospheric air or pure $CO_2$ for 20 minutes. The red cell volume was expressed in terms of hematocrit and mean corpuscular volume (M.C.V.). The results obtained were as follows. 1) On equilibration with the atmospheric air, the MCV and the plasma chloride level were $91.6{\pm}1.26\;c.{\mu}$ and $110.7{\pm}6.28mEq/L.$ respectively. 2) On equilibration with pure $CO_{2}$, the MCV and the plasma chloride level were $109.6{\pm}2.0\;c.{\mu}$ and $90.7{\pm}5.17\;mEq/L.$ respectively. 3) When the blood was subjected to equilibration with the atmospheric for air 20 minutes after equilibration with pure $CO_{2}$ for the same period of time the MCV and the plasma chloride level were $89.9{\pm}6.34\;c.{\mu}$ and $100.3{\pm}5.50\;mEq/L.$ respectively. From the above results it can be concluded that an increase of the blood $CO_2$ content in the experimental condition causes definitely a decrease of the plasma chloride level and a concomitant increase of the red cell volume, and that a decrease of the blood content $CO_2$ in the experimental condition causes definitely an increase of the plasma chloride level and a concomitant decrease of the red cell volme. Apparantly there exists a parallel relationship between the extent of the decrease of the plasma chloride level and that of the increase of the red cell volume when the blood $CO_2$ content increased in the experimental condition. When the blood $CO_2$ content decreased, the extent of the decrease of the red cell volume exceeds that of the increase of the plasma chloride level.
An apparatus for generating flames and more particularly the microwave plasma burner for generating high-temperature large-volume plasma flame was presented. The plasma burner was composed of micvrowave transmission lines, a field applicator, discharge tube, coal and gas supply systems, and a reactor. The plasma burner is operated by injecting coal powders into a 2.45 GHz microwave plasma torch and by mixing the resultant gaseous hydrogen and carbon compounds with plasma-forming gas. We in this work used air, oxygen, steam, and their mixtures as a discharge gas or oxidant gas. The microwave plasma torch can instantaneously vaporize and decompose the hydrogen and carbon containing fuels. It was observed that the flame volume of the burner was more than 50 times that of the torch plasma. The preliminary experiments were carried out by measuring the temperature profiles of flames along the radial and axial directions. We also investigated the characteristics for coal combustion and gasification by analyzing the byproducts from the exit of reactor. As expected, various byproducts such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, etc. were detected. It is expected that such burner cab be applied to coal gasification, hydrocarbon reforming, industrial boiler of power plants, etc.
This paper presents the evaluation of combustion characteristics of sing-hole plasma jet ignitions in comparison with conventional spark ignition for variable of swirl velocity. Plasma jet plugs are three types according to ejecting directions : center of chamber, positive and negative swirl flow direction. Experiments are carried out for equivalent ratio 1.0 of LPG-air mixture in a constant volume cylindrical vessel. Not only the flame propagation is photographed at intervals, but the pressure variation in the combustion chamber is also recorded throughout the entire combustion process. The results show that the plasma jet ignitions and spark ignition enhance the overall combustion rate by increasing the swirl velocity. The dependence of the combustion rate swirl velocity leade to the conclusion that the placma jet plug, which ejects plasma jet to the cwnter of combustion chamber is the most desirable ignitor than other plugs.
In this paper, the heat loss to the constant volume vessel wall was investigated using instantaneous heat flux sensor, schlieren visualization, pressure rise curve. And the heat loss characteristics of plasma jet ignition were compared with conventional spark ignition. In case of plasma jet ignition, the flame kernel moves toward the center of combustion vessel in the initial period of combustion, and the flame surface spread out to the vessel wall. However, in case of conventional spark ignition, the flame surface contact with combustion vessel wall in the initial period of combustion. As a result, heat loss in the combustion duration for conventional spark ignition increase faster than that of plasma jet ignition. And the combustion enhancement rate of plasma jet ignition is higher than that of conventional spark ignition, and it was found that the heat loss rate is inversely proportional to the combustion enhancement rate.
The relationship between exercise intensity, oxidative stress and antioxidant status has been studied in sixteen trained male athletes aged 20-25years. Subjects performed 30-40minutes of treadmill running at 65% of VO2 max(high intensity exercise). Blood samples were taken before and immediately after two exercise bouts for measurement of blood antioxidants, indices of lipid peroxidation and susceptibility of crythrocyte to peroxidation. Plasma concentrations of cholesterol(7.3%), vitamin C(7.5%) and uric acid(2.1%) were elevated a little after exercise at 65% of VO2 max(13.7%)were significantly high than before exercise(p<0.05). However, these exercise-induced changes could be partly due to significant decreases in plasma volume which occurred after both exercise bouts(p<0.05). Plasma volume decreased 5.85$\pm$2.06% and 11.25$\pm$2.87% with exercise at 65% and 85% of VO2 max, respectively. The erythrocyte susceptibility to peroxidation after exercise at 65% of VO2 max was unchanged compared with the value before exercise, whereas after exercise at 85% of VO2 max, it was significantly higher than after exercise at 65% and 85% of VO2 max as well as before exercise(p<0.05). A significant increase at 85% of VO2 max, it was significantly high than after exercise at 85% of VO2 max (29.10$\pm$4.76ug/g Hb)when compared with the level before exercise (24.61$\pm$3.45ug/g Hb)(p<0.05). The results suggest that exercise-induced changes in plasma levels of lipid peroxide and antioxidant need to be evaluated, taking the shift in plasma volume into consideration. Also, exercise at high intensity corresponding to 85% of VO2 max alters the erythrocyte antioxidant status in relation to exercise-induced of oxidative stress.
Plasma polymerization of allylamine subsequently after plasma pre-treatment was conducted on the activated carbon fibers (ACFs) for the immobilization of amine groups in the surface of ACFs. The change of structural properties of ACFs with respect to different polymerization conditions was investigated through BET method. The change of surface morphologies of ACFs with respect to different plasma polymerization power was also studied through AFM. It was found that the structural properties such as specific surface area and micropore volume could be optimized under certain plasma deposition conditions. It was reckoned that treatment and deposition showed adverse effect on plasma polymerization, in which the former developed the micro-structures of the ACFs and the latter tended to block the micro pores. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that the poly(allylamine) was successfully immobilized on the surface of ACFs and the amount of the deposited polymer layer was related to the plasma polymerization power. SEM results showed that the plasma deposited polymer layer were small and homogenously distributed. The size and the distribution of particles deposited were closely related to the plasma polymerization power, too.
