In this study isolation and identification of squalene from amaranth and antineoplastic activity of its residue extract except squalene were determined to examine the utilization of grain amaranth in Korea. The content of squalene in amaranth grain was about 0.43%. The isolated squalene showed 99% pureness containing the identical molecular weight and structure provisionally in comparison with that of animal squalene from Sigma Co. by means of GC /Mass spectrum. Antineoplastic activity against human gastric and colon carcinoma cell line was measured in extract (except squalene) from Amaranth using MTT method. Extract from remaining plant good showed significant cytotoxic effect at the concentration of less than 230$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml.
The usage level of pesticides in Korea reached the relatively high extent of 13 kg a.i./ha for arable land, and therefore, establishment of legal standards on pesticide residues in soil environment has been requested. This paper presents relevant information on soil contamination and proposes tentative standards on 20 pesticides in agricultural, urban and forest soils, respectively, as well as needed background data to support the justification of the standards.
One of the most threatening consequences of eutrophic freshwater reservoirs is algal blooming which typically occur after the long a mega drought or/and irregular rainfall under influence of climate change. The long-term experiences of chemical treatment are known as a most practical effort to reduce health concerns from human exposure of harmful cyanobacteria as well as to preserve ultimate freshwater resources. Even though these conventional chemical treatment methods do not completely solve the algal residue problem in water treatment plant or directly in the water bodies, they still have big advantages as fast and efficient removal process of cyanobacteria due to cheaper, easier to manage. This review summarizes their chemical treatment scenarios of the representative coagulants, pre-oxidants and algaecides composed to chemical compounds which immediately may help to manage severe cyanobacteria blooms in the summer seasons.
There are many methods of obtaining butadiene described in the literature. In the america it is produced largely from petroleum gases, i.e., by catalytic dehydrogenation of butene of butene-butane mixtures. Butadiene can be recovered from the $C_4$ residue of an olefin plant by distilling off a fraction containing most of the butadiene, catalytically hydrogenating the higher acetylenes to olefins and separating the product from other olefins and isobutane by extraction. Also it can be obtained by cracking naphtha and light oil. Among the individual dienes of commercial importance, 1, 3-butadiene is of first importance. It is used primarily for the production of polymers. In the present paper, it was investigated for a effect of the formation and the growth inhibition of popped corn polymer in butadiene extraction unit. As a result of study, inhibitors, $NaNO_2$ and TBC were good effective for inhibition of the formation and growth in popcorn polymer. The rational formula of popcorn polymer obtained was $(C_4H_6)_x$.

In 1995 we licensed pyrolysis gas melting technology of indirect heating type (using kiln) from Siemens AG, and built its demonstration facility in 1998 at Clean-Park-East of Fukuoka City to demonstrate the technology for municipal solid waste (MSW). In 1997 we were awarded an order from Kanemura Co., Ltd. to build a pyrolysis gas melting and power generation plant, specifically for treating residue from car shredder. The latter was launched in 1998, and is currently in commercial operation. The operation of these plants have proven the following facts. (1) The system is capable for performing a stable operation with a wide variety of waste. (2) Pyrolysis is achieved steadily regardless of the variation in the quality of waste. (3) The system can be operated under low excess air ratio (1.2∼1.3). (4) The concentration of dioxins at the furnace outlet is 0.062ng-TEQ/㎥$\_$N/, and 0.002ng-TEQ/㎥$\_$N/, at the stack. (the value is corrected to dryO$_2$ 12%) (5) The purity of recovered metals exceeds 90%.

This paper discussed hydrothermal reactivity of Ca(OH)2 and classified bituminous fly ashes which were collected at an electrostatic precipitator in coal fired power plant at 181$^{\circ}C$. The major products of hydrothermal reaction were tobermorite and hydrogrossularite because bituminous fly ashes contained Al2O3 content greater than 20 wt%. As increasing amount of Al2O3 content greater than 20 wt%. As increasing amount of Al2O3 in glass phases, formation of hydrogrossularite increased. Formation rate of crystalline tobermorite increased with content of finer particles, higher glass content and more Al2O3 in glass phases. There was a positive correlation between residue on 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ sieve and hydrothermal reactivity of fly ash up to 3 hours. The hydrothermal reactivity of fly ash at 181$^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours was more affected by fineness than by glass content of fly ash.
The recycling of TDA from solid waste of TDI plant(TDI-R) by near-critical hydrolysis reaction had been studied by means of a statistical design of experiment. The main and interaction effects of process variables had been defined from the experiments in a batch reactor and the correlation equation with process variables for TDA yield had been obtained from the experiments in a continuous pilot plant. It was confirmed that the effects of reaction temperature, catalyst type and concentration, and the weight ratio of water to TDI-R(WR) on TDA yield were significant. TDA yield decreased with increases in reaction temperature and catalyst concentration, and increased with an increase in WR. As a catalyst, NaOH was more effective than $Na_2CO_3$ for TDA yield. The interaction effects between catalyst concentration and temperature, WR and temperature, catalyst type and reaction time on TDA yield had been defined as significant. Although the effect of catalyst concentration on TDA yield at $300^{\circ}C$ as subcritical water was insignificant, the TDA yield decreased with increasing catalyst concentration at $400^{\circ}C$ as supercritical water. On the other hand, the yield increased with an increase in WR at $300^{\circ}C$ but showed negligible effect with WR at $400^{\circ}C$. The optimization of process variables for TDA yield has been explored with a pilot plant for scale-up. The catalyst concentration and WR were selected as process variables with respect to economic feasibility and efficiency. The effects of process variables on TDA yield had been explored by means of central composite design. The TDA yield increased with an increase in catalyst concentration. It showed maximum value at below 2.5 of WR and then decreased with an increase in WR. However, the ratio at which the TDA yield showed a maximum value increased with increasing catalyst concentration. The correlation equation of a quadratic model with catalyst concentration and WR had been obtained by the regression analysis of experimental results in a pilot plant.
A quantitative study on the mercury residue in the brown rice of "Paldal", a recommended rice variety in Korea, was carried out by changing the date and frequency of application with different forms of organo-mercury fungicide(PMA), which is used for the control of rice blast. The results are summarized follows: 1) Mercury residues were higher with the emulsion formulation(0.21 ppm) than the dust formulation (0.16 ppm) when they were used for the control of leaf blast on July 13. 2) In case when both of the emulsion and dust formulations were used on July 13 and August 13, respectively, the mrecury residues were lower in the treatment on July 13 (0.216 and 0.16 ppm) than in the treatment on August 13 (0.304 and 0.238 ppm). 3) In an emulsion formulation was applied once on August 13, the mercury residue was 0.304 ppm and its application in twice on July 13 and August 13, the residue was counted 0.32 ppm. In case of dust formulation, the residues were observed 0.238 ppm in a single dose and 0.276 ppm in double application. 4) When the fungicide was applied to the rice plant on August 13, the mercury residues in brown rice, rice bran, and stalk and leaves were 0.304, 0.323, and 0.676 ppm, respectively found in the case of emulsion and in the case of dust formulation, they were 0.238, 0.283 and 0.698 ppm, respectively. The mercury residue, in general, were less in the case of dust than in the case of emulsion formulation and lowered by a single treatment than by two times application and it was also less by treating on July 13 than by treating on August 13.
This study was conducted to monitor residual pesticides in ginseng and balloon flower roots and to assess their risk to human health. All of 112 samples consisted of ginseng and balloon roots were purchased from traditional domestic markets and supermarkets in nine provinces of Korea in 2012. Multi-residue analysis of 122 pesticides was conducted and the analysis was performed by gas chromatography-electron capture detector, gas chromatography- nitrogen/phosphorus detector, and high-performance liquid chromatography. Seven pesticides were detected in 12 root samples and the detection rate was 10.7%. The detected twelve root samples were 10 ginseng root samples and 2 balloon root samples. Pesticides detected in root samples were procymidone, kresoxim-methyl, endosulfan, cypermethrin, tralomethrin, tetraconazole and chlorfluazuron. Among them, two pesticides as tetraconazole in a balloon flower root and cypermethrin in a ginseng root exceeded the recommended maximum residue limit set by Korea Food and Drug Administration. Five pesticides detected from 10 root samples were identified as unregistered pesticides in Korea. In order to do risk assessment with Korean medicinal plant consumption, estimated daily intake of residual pesticides were determined and compared to acceptable daily intake, referring to %ADI values. The range of %ADI values was from 0.006% to 0.333%. Taken together, it demonstrates the pesticides found in the two root samples were below the safety margin, indicating no effect on human health.
