  • Planetary ball mill was used to decrease and control the particle size of excipients. The effects of the weight of sample and the revolution number of mill, and grinding time on the particle size of the ground sample were analyzed by response surface methodology. The optimum conditions for the milling of microcrystalline cellulose were 38.82 g of the weight of sample and 259 rpm of the revolution number of mill, and 45 minutes of grinding time. The predicted value of the particle size at the these conditions was $19.02{\mu}m$, of which the experimental value at the similar conditions was $18.68{\mu}m$. The tensile strength of tablets of single-component powders, such as microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose and starch, binary mixtures and ground binary mixtures of these powder were measured at various relative densities. It was found that the logarithm of the tensile strength of the tablets was proportional to the relative density. A simple model, based upon Ryshkewitch-Duckworth equation that was originally proposed for porous materials, has been developed in order to predict the relationship between the tensile strength and relative density of ground binary tablets based on the properties of the constituent single-component powders. The validity of the model has been verified with experimental results for ground binary mixtures. It has demonstrated that this model can well predict the tensile strength of ground binary mixtures based upon the properties of single-component powders, such as true density, and the compositions. When the tensile strength of the mixture of microcrystalline cellulose hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (90:10) and the ground mixture of them were compared, the tensile strength of the ground mixture decreased widely from 45.3 to 5.6% compared to the mixture in case the relative density of tablets was in the range of $0.7{\sim}0.9$. When the tensile strength of the mixture of microcrystalline cellulose starch (80:20) and the ground mixture of them were compared, the tensile strength of the ground mixture decreased widely from 31.0 to 11.6% compared to the mixture in case the relative density of tablets was in the range of $0.7{\sim}0.9$.

  • A sintered body of $TiB_2$-reinforced iron matrix composite ($Fe-TiB_2$) is fabricated by pressureless-sintering of a mixture of titanium hydride ($TiH_2$) and iron boride (FeB) powders. The powder mixture is prepared in a planetary ball-mill at 700 rpm for 3 h and then pressurelessly sintered at 1300, 1350 and $1400^{\circ}C$ for 0-2 h. The optimal sintering temperature for high densities (above 95% relative density) is between 1350 and $1400^{\circ}C$, where the holding time can be varied from 0.25 to 2 h. A maximum relative density of 96.0% is obtained from the ($FeB+TiH_2$) powder compacts sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Sintered compacts have two main phases of Fe and $TiB_2$ along with traces of TiB, which seems to be formed through the reaction of TiB2 formed at lower temperatures during the heating stage with the excess Ti that is intentionally added to complete the reaction for $TiB_2$ formation. Nearly fully densified sintered compacts show a homogeneous microstructure composed of fine $TiB_2$ particulates with submicron sizes and an Fe-matrix. A maximum hardness of 71.2 HRC is obtained from the specimen sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 0.5 h, which is nearly equivalent to the HRC of conventional WC-Co hardmetals containing 20 wt% Co.

  • The objective of this works was to synthesize the$Mg_2Ni$ hydrogen storage materials economically and to eliminate the intial activation process. $Mg_2NiH_x$ was mechanically alloyed under purified hydrogen gas atmosphere using pure Mg and Ni chips. M.A(Mechanical Alloying) was carried out using planetary ball mill for times varying from 12h to 96h under 20bars of hydrogen gas pressure. $Mg_2NiH_x$ started to form after 48h and the homogeneous $Mg_2NiH_x$ composites was synthesized after 96h. From TG analysis, the dehydriding reaction of $Mg_2NiH_x$ started at around $200^{\circ}C$. The result of P-C-T at $300^{\circ}C$ revealed the hydrogen storage capacity of $Mg_2NiH_c$ reached 3.68 wt% and the effective hydrogen storage was 2.38 wt%. The enthalpy difference of absorption-desorption cycling for the hydride formation and the hysteresis were reduced and the plateau flatness and the sloping were improved according to M.A time.

  • $Zn(BH_4)_2$ was prepared by milling $ZnCl_2$ and $NaBH_4$ in a planetary ball mill in an Ar atmosphere, and XRD analysis, SEM observation, FT-IR analysis, DTA, and TGA were performed for synthesized $Zn(BH_4)_2$ samples. 90 wt% $MgH_2$+1.67 wt% $Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$+5 wt% Ni+1.67 wt% Ti+1.67 wt% Fe (named $90MgH_2+1.67Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$+5Ni+1.67Ti+1.67Fe) samples were also prepared by milling in a planetary ball mill in an $H_2$ atmosphere. The gas absorption and release properties of the $Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$ and $90MgH_2+1.67Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)_2(+NaCl)$+5Ni+1.67Ti+1.67Fe samples were investigated. An FT-IR analysis showed that $Zn(BH_4)_2$ formed in the $Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$ samples prepared by milling $ZnCl_2$ and $NaBH_4$. At the first cycle at $320^{\circ}C$, $90MgH_2+1.67Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$+5Ni+1.67Ti+1.67Fe absorbed 2.95 wt% H for 2.5 min and 4.93 wt% H for 60 min under 12 bar $H_2$, and released 1.46 wt% H for 10 min and 4.57 wt% H for 60 min under 1.0 bar $H_2$.

  • The powder core, conventionally fabricated from iron particles coated with insulator, showed large eddy current loss under high frequency, because of small specific resistance. To overcome the eddy current loss, the increase in the specific resistance of powder cores was needed. In this study, copper oxide coating onto electrically conductive iron particles was performed using a planetary ball mill to increase the specific resistance. Coating factors were optimized by the Response surface methodology. The independent variables were the CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, coating time, ball size, ball mass and sample mass. The response variable was the specific resistance. The optimization of six factors by the fractional factorial design indicated that CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, and coating time were the key factors. The levels of these three factors were selected by the three-factors full factorial design and steepest ascent method. The steepest ascent method was used to approach the optimum range for maximum specific resistance. The Box-Behnken design was finally used to analyze the response surfaces of the screened factors for further optimization. The results of the Box-Behnken design showed that the CuO mass fraction and mill revolution number were the main factors affecting the efficiency of coating process. As the CuO mass fraction increased, the specific resistance increased. In contrast, the specific resistance increased with decreasing mill revolution number. The process optimization results revealed a high agreement between the experimental and the predicted data ($Adj-R^2=0.944$). The optimized CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, and coating time were 0.4, 200 rpm, and 15 min, respectively. The measured value of the specific resistance of the coated pellet under the optimized conditions of the maximum specific resistance was $530k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$.

  • This study investigated the effects of revolution speed and ball size in planetary milling on the microstructure and dehydrogenation behavior of TiH2 powder. The particle size analysis showed that the large particles present in the raw powder were effectively refined as the revolution speed increased, and when milled at 500 rpm, the median particle size was 1.47 ㎛. Milling with a mixture of balls of two or three sizes was more effective in refining the raw powder than milling with balls of a single size. A mixture of 3 mm and 5 mm diameter balls was the optimal condition for particle refinement, and the measured median particle size was 0.71 ㎛. The dependence of particle size on revolution speed and ball size was explained by changes in input energy and the number of contact points of the balls. In the milled powder, the endothermic peak measured using differential thermal analysis was observed at a relatively low temperature. This finding was interpreted as the activation of a dehydrogenation reaction, mainly due to the increase in the specific surface area and the concentration of lattice defects.

  • The rotation of a spindle unit must be accurate for high-quality machining and to improve the quality of the machine tools. Therefore, the proper measurement of the rotation accuracy and ensuring a proper analysis are very important. Separate processes are necessary because spindle errors and roundness errors associated with the test balls can both factor into the measured rotation error values. We used three methods to discern test ball errors and analyzed which could be deemed as the most proper technique in a test of the rotation accuracy of the main spindle of a machine tool.

  • The microstructure and mechanical properties of $TiB_2/Si$ nanocomposites based on the Ti-Si-B system, consolidated by spark plasma sintering of mechanically alloyed activated nanopowders, have been characterized. Mechanical Alloying was carried out in a planetary ball mill for 180 min with 350 rev $min^{-1}$. The powders were pressed in vacuum at a pressure of 60 MPa, generating a maximum temperature in the graphite mould of $1400^{\circ}C$. Analysis of the synthesized nanocomposites by SEM, XRD and TEM showed them to consist of $TiB_2$ second phase, sub-micron in size, with no third phase. Composites consolidated from powders mechanically alloyed from an initial elemental powder mix of 0.3 mol Si, 0.7 mol Ti, and 2.0 mol B achieved the best relative density (97%) and bending strength (774 MPa); the highest Vickers hardness of 14.7 GPa was achieved for the 0.1-0.9-2.0 mol starting composition.

  • This paper deals with the phase analysis of $MgB_2$ bulk using spark plasma sintering process after ball milling. Mg and amorphous B powders were used as raw materials, and milled by planetary-mill for 9 hours at argon atmosphere. In order to confirm formation of $MgB_2$ phase, DTA and XRD were used. The milled powders were fabricated to $MgB_2$ bulk at the various temperatures by Spark Plasma Sintering. The fabricated $MgB_2$ bulk was evaluated with XRD, EDS, FE-SEM and PPMS. In the DTA result, reaction on formation of $MgB_2$ phase started at $340^{\circ}C$. This means that ball milling process improves reactivity on formation of $MgB_2$ phase. The $MgB_2$ MgO and FeB phases were characterized from XRD result. MgO and FeB were undesirable phases which affect formation of $MgB_2$ phase, and it's distribution could be confirmed from EDS mapping result. Spark Plasma Sintered sample for 5 min at $700^{\circ}C$ was relatively densified and it's density and transition temperature showing super conducting property were $1.87\;g/cm^3$ and 21K.
