  • This study shows possibility of active fault, throughout analyzing distributional features of tectonic and fluvial geomorphology and mineral composition of fault fracture clay, at Jinbu fault-line system in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province. Fault-line valley was formed remarkably in the upper reaches of Odae River and upper reaches of Yeongok River according along Jinbu fault-line. Landforms show rectilineal distribution at right shore slopes of Odae River in Ganpyeong-ri, southern zone of Jinbu fault-line system, related to the tectonic processes, such as triangular facet, kernbut, kerncol and alluvial fan. Fault fracture clay zones were developed at 5 outcrops($jbf1{\sim}5$), located in kerncol. Particularly, jbf1 fault outcrop, developed at granite saprolite, has obvious fault plane and fault clay composed of illite and laumontite. The Jinbu Fault-line along jbf4-2-3-5 may be formed by regional compressive stress, and jbf1 fault may be suggested a tributary fault of the Jinbu fault-line formed before the late Pleistocene. The vertical displacement of the east and west blocks of the Jinbu Fault-line is estimated in $0.024{\sim}0.027m/ka$.

  • The Seosanmaaesamjonbulsang (National Treasure No. 84) consists of light gray and coarse to mediumgrained biotite granite with partly developed pegmatite and quartz vein. The host rock is divided into dozens of rock blocks with various shape along irregular discontinuity plane. The evaluation results of discontinuity systems reveal that the host rock were exposed to instable sloping environments. Results of deterioration diagnosis show that the degree of damage has been made worse by physical weathering and surface discoloration laying stress on part that vertical and horizontal joints are massed. Generally, deterioration rate of the triad Buddha surface cover with 42.7%, however, the rate of physical weathering and surface discoloration are subdivided to 9.6% and 33.1%, respectively. Ultrasonic measurements indicate that the triad Buddha was reached highly weathered grade in general. And the rock material was weaken to show low velocity zone of 1,000m/s along irregular joint systems. Indoor and outdoor mean relative humidity of the shelter was recorded more than 70% during every season, and high frequency appears in high relative humidity range over 95%. Such environments seem to have produced dew condensation on the rock surface with rainfall and supply water, promoted physical, chemical and biological weathering along crack and joint, resulting in high permeation of water and percentage of water content. Therefore, it is judged that for scientific conservation of the triad Buddha it needs environment control through persistent preservation environment monitoring including water problem.

  • This study deals with free vibrations of laminated composite structures with a channel section using finite element method. In this paper, the mixed finite element method using Lagrangian and Hermite interpolation functions is adopted and a high-order plate theory is used to analyze laminated composite non-prismatic folded plates with a channel section more accurately for free vibration. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stress and requires no shear correction factors supposed in the first-order plate theory. An 32×32 matrix is assembled to transform the system element matrices from the local to global coordinates using a coordinate transformation matrix, in which an eighth drilling degree of freedom (DOF) per node is appended to the existing 7-DOF system. The results in this study are compared with those of available literatures for the conventional and first-order plate theory. Sample studies are carried out for various layup configurations and length-thickness ratio, and geometric shapes of plates. The significance of the high-order plate theory in analyzing complex composite structures with a channel section is enunciated in this paper.

  • This paper described the ultimate strength and deformation limit of new uniplanar T-joints in cold-formed square hollow sections. The new T-joint had the configuration that only a branch member was oriented at 45 degrees to a chord member in the plane of the truss. This study focused on the branch-rotated T-joints governed by chord web failure. Based on the test results of the T-joint in cold-formed square hollow sections, the deformation lirnit was found to be 3%B for $16.7{\leq}2(B/T){\leq}33.3$ and $0.63{\leq}(b_1/B)=0.7$. Existing strength formulas for traditional T-joint were investigated, and the new strength formula for the branch-rotated T-joint was proposed. This proposed formula was based on column buckling theory considering the rounded corners of cold-formed square hollow sections. Finally, the optimization condition of yield stress and $2{\gamma}$ was recommended to select the optimized chord section.

  • A geologic structure could be formed through various processes, because there are a number of factors which control the deformation of the Earth's crust. In geology, we could call it geological epistemology to describe exactly a geologic structure, and call it geological logics to infer logically the deforming process through which the geologic structure had been formed. Degree of legitimacy of geological logics depends upon the degree of exactness of geological epistemology. This study described quantitatively 3-dimensional Hambaek Syncline through computer analysis, and examined qualitatively into its deforming mechanism based on the results of 3-dimensional analysis of the structure. Input data for the computer analysis are dips and dip directions of bedding planes of the structure. The Hambaek Syncline disclose a minor fold group of NE-SW or NNE-SSW trend and a large scale fold of E-W trend. The conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) The fold of E-W trend is primary fold $(F_1)$ and the minor fold group of NE-SW or NNE-SSW trend secondary fold $(F_2)$. (2) Hambaek Syncline is cylindrical type fold. (3) Apparent axial trace of Hambaek syncline does not coincide with true axial trace. The apparent axial trace is $N70^{\circ}-80^{\circ}W$ in Gohan and Sabuk area, and changes to $N70^{\circ}-80^{\circ}E$ in the westward of the area, while the true axial trace is $N40^{\circ}-70^{\circ}W$ in the former, and $N60^{\circ}-80^{\circ}E$ in the latter area. (4) Westward dipping of axial plane of the minor fold group of NE-SW or NNE-SSW trend can be attributed to simple shear movements along overthrusts. (5) Angle between axial trace and the directional trace of the maximum principal compressive stress $({\sigma}_1)$ may not be perpendicular each other. The angle between them is governed by the following factors; 1) the plunge of fold axis 2) the dip of axial surface 3) cylindrisity (6) The mean axial trace of Hambaek Syncline $(F_1)$ is $N45.6^{\circ}W$, and the directional trace of ${\sigma}_1$ is $N52.4^{\circ}E$ (7) The mean axial trace of the minor fold group of NE-SW or NNE-SSW trend $(F_2)$ is $N21^{\circ}E$, and the directional trace of ${\sigma}_1$ is $N22^{\circ}W$.

  • In ship structures many of the structural plates have cutouts, for example, at inner bottom structure, girder, upper deck hatch, floor and dia-frame etc. In the case where a plate has a cutout it experiences reduced buckling and ultimate strength and at the same time the in-plane stress under compressive load produced by hull girder bending will be redistributed In general, actual ship structure adopted reinforcement of stiffener around the cutout in order to preventing from buckling so it need to examine a buckling and ultimate strength behaviour considering a cutout because In many ship yards used class rule for calculating buckling strength but it is difficult to evaluate perforate stiffened plate with random size. In the present paper, we investigated several kinds of perforated stiffened model from actual ship and then was performed finite element series analysis varying the cutout ratio, web height, thickness and type of cross-section using commercial FEA program(ANSYS) under compressive load.

  • It is important to consider the effect of member size when estimating the ultimate strength of a concrete flexural member because the strength always decreases with an increase of member size. In this study, the size effect of a reinforced concrete (RC) beam was experimentally investigated. For this purpose, a series of beam specimens subjected to four-point loading were tested. More specifically, three different effective depth (d$\approx$15, 30, and 60 cm) reinforced concrete beams were tested to investigate the size effect. The shear-span to depth ratio (a/d=3) and thickness (20 cm) of the specimens were kept constant where the size effect in out-of-plane direction is not considered. The test results are curve fitted using least square method (LSM) to obtain parameters for the modified size effect law (MSEL). The analysis results show that the flexural compressive strength and the ultimate strain decrease as the specimen size increases. In the future study, since $\beta_1$ value suggested by design code and ultimate strain change with specimen size variation, a more detailed analysis should be performed. Finally, parameters for MSEL are also suggested.

  • Double symmetric patch repair of existing structures always causes membrane action only, however, in many cases this technique is not practical. On the other hand, the bending stiffness of the patch and the skin increases as tensile loading is increased and affects the bending deformation significantly in the case of single-sided patch repair. In this study, the p-convergent full layerwise model has been proposed to determine the stress concentration factor in the vicinity of a circular hole as well as across the thickness of plates with single-sided patch repair. In assumed displacement field, the strain-displacement relations and 3-D constitutive equations of a layer are obtained by the combination of 2-D and 3-D hierarchical shape functions. The transfinite mapping technique has been used to represent a circular boundary and Gauss-Lobatto numerical integration is implemented in order to directly obtain stresses occurred at the nodal points of each layer without other extrapolation techniques. The accuracy and simplicity of the present model are verified with comparison of the previous results in literatures using experiment and conventional 3-D finite element. Also, the bending effect has been investigated with various patch types like square, circular and annular shape.

  • The numerical simulation of Brazilian fracture toughness test is carried out using PFC code and the influence parameters are analyzed such as shape of loading plane, size of Brazilian disc and unit panicle of model, loading angle and loading rate. The flattened Brazilian disc is adopted for applying uniform load. The range of loading angle(2$\alpha$) necessary to induce the tensile crack at disc center and to obtain the load-displacement curve giving the critical load for the stable crack propagation is shown as 20$^{\circ}$~40$^{\circ}$. In condition that the loading angle is 20$^{\circ}$, the mode-I fracture toughness is evaluated almost constant in the range of particle size less than I mm and loading rate less than 0.01 mm/s. This range of influence parameters seems appropriate condition for the tensile crack initiation at disc center and the control of stable crack propagation, which can give the reliance in evaluation of fracture toughness by Brazilian test.
