The performance of a centrifugal compressor composed of an impeller, tandem diffuser rows and axial guide vanes has been predicted numerically and compared with available experimental results on its design rotational speed. The pitchwise-averaged mixing plane method was employed for the boundaries between rotor and stator to obtain steady state solutions. The overall characteristics showed differently according to the relative positions of tandem diffuser rows while the characteristics of impeller showed almost identical. The numerical results agree with the measured data in respect of their tendency. It turned out that 0% of relative positions is the worst case in terms of static pressure recovery and efficiency. According to the experimental results, some pressure fluctuations and malfunction of the compressor were observed for 75% case. However, this numerical calculation using mixing plane method did not capture any of those phenomena. Thus, unsteady flow calculation should be performed to investigate the stability of the compressor caused by different diffuser configuration.

In this study, mixing and dilution characteristics of vertical multijet discharged by multiport diffuser into stagnant water are investigated. The results obtained from the experiment of multiport diffuser performed in the three dimensional flume are as follows. As far as merging process of multiport diffuser is concerned, merging starts at about z/l = 3 although merging length is dependent upon stability condition and thereafter lateral temperature distribution becomes gradually uniform which is typical distribution of plane jet. Analyses of experimental data for minimum dilution show that characteristics of minimum dilution are described based on three regions which are jet region where momentum is dominated, intermediate region, and plume region where buoyancy is dominated. Minimum dilution coefficient in plume region of multiport diffuser obtained in this study is 15% higher than that of plane diffuser. This is because individual jet of multiport diffuser entrains more ambient water before merging is occurred, and therefore dilution increases.
In this paper, the flow characteristics of the mixed-flow pump impellers and diffusers were numerically predicted by commercial CFD software and DOE(design of experiments). We also discussed how to improve the performance of the mixed-flow pump by designing the impeller and diffuser in the mixed-flow pump. Geometric design variables were defined by the vane plane development which indicates the blade-angle distributions and length of the impeller and the diffusers. Firstly, the design optimization of the defined impeller geometric variables has been done. After that, the flow characteristics were analyzed in the point of incidence angle at the diffuser leading edge for the optimized impeller. Then design of the defined diffuser shape variables has been performed. The reason for the performance improvement was discussed by examining the flow characteristics through the diffuser.

Exhaust system of steam turbines consists of an annular diffuser and a collector and connects the last stage turbine and the condenser. The system is used to transfer the turbine leaving kinetic energy to potential energy while guiding the flow from turbine exit plane to the downstream condenser. In the steam turbine exhaust system, distorted pressure profile is arisen by the nonaxisymmetric collector structure at the diffuser outlet, and this distorted pressure is propagated to the last stage LP turbine exit plane through the diffuser, then the last stage LP turbine experiences asymmetric back pressure. It is known that the pressure recovery performance of diffuser is strongly influenced by diffuser inflow condition. In this study, the effect of exhaust system due to the changing of inlet flow condition is observed by using CFD, and the interaction of last stage LP turbine and exhaust system is investigated by using actuator disk model as modeling of turbine blade row of exhaust hood inlet.

This paper proposes a novel diffuser design for Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbines (DAWT) based on the blunt trailing edge airfoil AF300. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out to measure the performance of the AF300 diffuser against diffusers made with the shape of other high performance low wind speed airfoils. The results show that the proposed diffuser produces a greater air mass flow increase through the plane of the turbine than the other diffusers and it can be used to increase the performance of a horizontal axis wind turbine.

In this paper, design optimization for mixed-flow pump impellers and diffusers has been studied using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code and DOE (design of experiments). We also discussed how to improve the performance of the mixed-flow pump by designing the impeller and diffuser. Geometric design variables were defined by the vane plane development, which indicates the blade-angle distributions and length of the impeller and diffusers. The vane plane development was controlled using the blade-angle in a fixed meridional shape. First, the design optimization of the defined impeller geometric variables was achieved, and then the flow characteristics were analyzed in the point of incidence angle at the diffuser leading edge for the optimized impeller. Next, design optimizations of the defined diffuser shape variables were performed. The importance of the geometric design variables was analyzed using $2^k$ factorial designs, and the design optimization of the geometric variables was determined using the response surface method (RSM). The objective functions were defined as the total head and the total efficiency at the design flow rate. Based on the comparison of CFD results between the optimized pump and base design models, the reason for the performance improvement was discussed.

An experimental study is performed on the flow characteristics of a swirl-jet diffuser for factory ventilation. Swirl number ranges from 0(nonswirl jet) to 0.6 when the angle of swirl vane is 60 degree. As swirl becomes strong, the maximum velocity in the plane perpendicular to jet axis decreases fast and the uniformity of velocity becomes good, particularly in the ventilated area. The similarity in velocity profiles has been found for axial velocity from even when swirl number equals 0.6. The flow characteristics of the swirl-jet which has the swirl number of 0.6 is thought to be the best among these three swirl numbers for factory ventilation. However, the pressure drop in the diffuser increases as the swirl becomes strong. This should be considered in the design of the total ventilation system including a duct system.
In this study an analysis of the flow characteristics in three types of turbo-fans for a vacuum cleaner was performed by using CFD. The characteristics of three models calculated for various rotating speed for flow rates are obtained and compared with measured data. The mixing plane approach is applied to compute the flow between impeller and diffuser. The results show that the model that is modified to reduce fan noise gives stable flow characteristics in operating range than the original model, with both models show similar performance characteristics at the range of high flow rate. Since in the modified model it takes much longer for an impeller blade to pass a diffuser blade than in the original model, and the peak pressure at BPF can be relieved, it is anticipated that the modified model give much lower noise level with similar performance than the original one, which remains to be verified by unsteady computation and measurements. The good agreement between the predictions and measurement results confirms the validity of this study.

This study was aimed at analyzing the velocity and pressure changes in the airflow corresponding to different configurations of a diffuser for three types of cars. According to the flow results of the three automotive models, in model 3, the vortex was formed slightly upward on the outlet plane, whereas in models 1 and 2, the vortex was generated lower than that in model 3. The values of the pressure distribution in model 3 were larger than those for models 1 and 2 on the planes located at the same distance from the end of the rear part. The maximum turbulent kinetic energies in models 1 and 2 occurred at a location lower than that in model 3. The shape corresponding to the airflow that enhanced the driving performance was determined through the flow analysis.
