  • In economical points of view, AC loss of high temperature superconducting devices is considered as a serious problem that must be solved. Expecially, in case of HTS cables, HTS tapes are wound helically on the former to reduce AC loss. Critical characteristics of HTS tapes, however, are influenced by mechanical stress as well as electrical, temperature, and magnetical factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the over current characteristics of HTS tapes given mechanical stress when they are wound on the former. We prepared HTS tapes with the pitch angle 20$^{\circ}$, length 25cm as well as tapes with pitch angle 0$^{\circ}$. When current of over 200A$\_$rms/ was applied, we found out that there are differences to the rate of resistance increase between the case of pitch angle 20$^{\circ}$and that of 0$^{\circ}$. The rate of resistance variation in HTS tapes of pitch angle 20$^{\circ}$increased more slowly than that of pitch angle 0$^{\circ}$. As a result, we concluded that if critical characteristics of HTS tapes are degraded by any external factor, when over current is applied, the current limiting characteristics in HTS tapes won't be able to be expected any more.

  • The aim of this paper is to suggest one efficient method for the various requirements of performance during the process designing and producing an impeller. The study considers that the revisions of a pitch angle of an impeller at an axial turbo fan affect an air flow rates and a static pressure rise. The axial turbo fan specified with the 250 Pa maximum static pressure and 1300 CMH fan air flow rates was tested and analyzed by CFD. The Numerical results show that the air flow rates are calculated to 1,175 CMH, 1,223 CMH, 1,270 CMH, 1,340 CMH and 800 CMH in cases that the pitch angles are $44^{\circ},\;49^{\circ},\;54^{\circ},\;59^{\circ},\;and\;64^{\circ}$ respectively. Also the static pressure rises are shown to 108 Pa, 122Pa, 141 Pa, 188 Pa and 63 Pa at the same cases. The air flow rate is increased linearly according to the changes of the pitch angle from $44^{\circ}\;to\;59^{\circ}$ and the maximum air flow rate passing the impeller is increased to $13\%$ over at the case of $59^{\circ}$ pitch angle compared with the reference case of $54^{\circ}$ pitch angle. The static pressure rise is increased linearly according to the changes of the pitch angle from $44^{\circ}\;to\;54^{\circ}$, too. The static pressure rise at the $59^{\circ}$ pitch angle is increased to $33\%$ over compared with the $54^{\circ}$ pitch angle. The result shows that the revisions of pitch angle make the static pressure rise increase widely. However the air flow rates and the static pressure rise at the $64^{\circ}$ pitch angle are suddenly decreased because of over-changed pitch angle.

  • This paper presents a method for the automatic recognition of pitch accents with no prior knowledge about the phonetic content of the signal (no knowledge of word or phoneme boundaries or of phoneme labels). The recognition algorithm used in this paper is a time-delay recurrent neural network (TDRNN). A TDRNN is a neural network classier with two different representations of dynamic context: delayed input nodes allow the representation of an explicit trajectory F0(t), while recurrent nodes provide long-term context information that can be used to normalize the input F0 trajectory. Performance of the TDRNN is compared to the performance of a MLP (multi-layer perceptron) and an HMM (Hidden Markov Model) on the same task. The TDRNN shows the correct recognition of $91.9{\%}\;of\;pitch\;events\;and\;91.0{\%}$ of pitch non-events, for an average accuracy of $91.5{\%}$ over both pitch events and non-events. The MLP with contextual input exhibits $85.8{\%},\;85.5{\%},\;and\;85.6{\%}$ recognition accuracy respectively, while the HMM shows the correct recognition of $36.8{\%}\;of\;pitch\;events\;and\;87.3{\%}$ of pitch non-events, for an average accuracy of $62.2{\%}$ over both pitch events and non-events. These results suggest that the TDRNN architecture is useful for the automatic recognition of pitch accents.

  • In this study, the prosodic disambiguation of the syntactic attachment differences was investigated in relation to the effect of lexical bias. Speech materials were composed of N1-conj-N2-PP phrases such as "walkers and runners with dogs." The results show that the use of durational pattern is dominant over the pitch pattern to differentiate the attachment differences. The characteristic pitch contour was the rise and fall over N1 and N2 in the high attachment. The pitch contour in the low attachment was the rise and fall over N2 and N3 although the frequency of such patterns was lower for the low attachment case. For the durational pattern, the lengthening in the N2 region plays a significant role in the disambiguation of the syntactic attachments. The interaction between the lexical bias and the syntactic attachment was not statistically significant in the duration data.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the pitch rules of Chinese poetry. Pitch rules are concerned with the high tone and the low tone. Because Chinese poetry is a fixed form of verse, it must keep pitch rules to compose Chinese poetry. But until now there has been no acoustic study of pitch rules of Chinese poetry. So, for the first time the present study investigates pitch rules of Chinese poetry acoustically. Pitch contours were analyzed from the sound spectrogram made by Praat. Results showed that actual pitch patterns did not coincide with theoretical pitch rules in reciting Chinese poetry. Therefore, in studying Chinese classics, the Chinese poetry, which has traditionally been considered to be recited according to original Chinese pitch rules, must now be considered in terms of how pitch rules may have changed over time in Korea since it was first introduce to Korean scholars.

  • In speech signal processing, it is necessary to detect exactly the pitch. The algorithms of pitch extraction which have been proposed until now are difficult to detect pitches over wide range speech signals. Thus we propose a new algorithm which uses the G-peak extraction to do it. It is the method that finds the most MZI(maximum zero-crossing interval) at each frame and convolve it with speech signal ; this is the same with passing speech signals to variable LPF. Finally we obtained the pitch, improve the accuracy of pitch detection and extract it with the high speed.

  • The aim of this study is to develop an the assessment program for the singing voice which is based on the physiological and acoustic methods. 22 sopranos, 6 mezzo sopranos, 4 tenors and 4 baritones participated to these experiments. The results measured by Visi-Pitch, spectrograph, and strobo-scope can be summarized as follows: (1) The maximum phonation time of singers must over 14 second higher with one deep inspiration (2) The parts classified by vocal range using Visi-Pitch: soprano between 167Hz $\sim$1,190Hz, mezzo soprano between 146Hz$\sim$956Hz, tenor between 75Hz$\sim$503Hz and baritone between 73 Hz and 385 Hz. (3) Longitudinal glottal size of singers decreases depending on the high-low pitch variation while lattitudinal glottal size increases depending on high-low pitch variation. (4) Well-trained singers show over 5 times the vibrato rate of untrained singers and regular pitch variation during measured periods. Vibrato's intensity do not over 3 dB. (5) Singer's formant indicates professional voice depending on the each parts: 3,207 Hz for soprano, 3,057 Hz for mezzo soprano, 2,754 Hz for tenor and 2,560 Hz for baritone.. (6) $F_1$ of singing voice is higher than that of speech while $F_2\;and\;F_3$ of singing voice are lower than those of speech.

  • A particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed to investigate the effects of blowing jet on the flow characteristics over stationary and pitch-oscillating airfoils. The Reynolds number was $7.84{\times}10^5$ based on the chord length. It was found that for stationary airfoil cases, continuous and pulsating blowing jets successfully reduced separated wake region at high angles of attack. A comparison study of two different types of jet blowing indicated that pulsating jet is more effective than continuous jet for flow separation control. Pulsating leading-edge blowing postpones flow separation and increased stall angle of attack by $2^{\circ}{\sim}3^{\circ}$. For pitch-oscillating airfoil cases, the PIV results showed that blowing jet efficiently delays the separation onset point during pitch-up stroke, whereas it does not prevent flow separation during pitch-down stroke, even at angles of attack smaller than static ones.

  • In this paper, the issue of pitch control in a vertical axis wind turbine was tackled. Programming the Actuator Cylinder model in MATLAB, a theoretical optimum pitch solution was found and then a classic four-bar mechanism was adapted to that theoretical solution to achieve a simple and elegant control of the pitch in the turbine. A simulation using the mechanism worked to find the optimum pitch cycles, where it was found that the mechanism would, in fact, increase the efficiency of the VAWT, by at least 11% and in the best case, over 35%. Another aspect that is studied is the possibility of self-start of the turbine by only changing the pitch on the blades. This analysis, however, proved that a further individual pitch control must be used to surpass the cogging torque. All analyses conducted were done for a specific wind turbine that is 2 m2 in the swept area.
