Vegetation structure of Jangtaesan Natural Recreation Forest in Daejeon City was investigated to suggest a preferable management plan. Vegetation survey was carried out with thirty plots. Adopting phytosociological method, plant communities were classified into twinfolds of natural and afforested area. A natural forest were composed of Quercus mongolica, Quercus variabilis, and Pinus densiflora community. Afforested area were with Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Larix leptolepis, Pinus koraiensis, and Castanea crenata community. The importance value of Quercus mongolica, Quercus variabilis, Pinus densiflora, and Quercus serrata in natural forest were 59.69%, 48.32%, 39.10%, 21.53%, respectively. According to diameter of breast hieght analysis results, it is expected that the occupancy of Quercus mongolica, Pinus densiflora, and Quercus variabilis would be continuously increased. Based on the findings of the study, management plan for natural forest and afforested area was recommended in line with the progress of natural ecology.
This study was to analyze the chamical components of the pollens of Pinus rigida and P. koraensis and to investigate the optimal conditions for pollen pulverization. The results are as follow: (1) The contents of moisture, crude ash, crude protein, crude fat, crude filber and carbohydrate in the pollen of P. rigida were 9.9%, 2.5%, 13.1% 2.9% 7.5% 64.1% respectively, while those of P. koraiensis were 9.8%, 2.1%, 11.1% 2.8% 8.1% 66.1% respectively. All the contents of P. rigida and P. koraiensis were much higher than those of general crop grains. (2) Eighteen different amino acids were detected in the pollen of P. rigida and P. koraiensis. Among them, ten essential amino acids were indentified, which showed high nutritions values. (3) The contents of vitamin A, B1, B2, C, and E in the pollen of P. rigida were 8.7 mg, 10.1 mg, 15.9 mg, 32.9 mg, 1.9 mg, respectively, while those of in the pollen of P. koraiensis were 7.9 mg, 9.7 mg, 14.5 mg, 34.2 mg, and 2.5 mg respectively. Vitamin C among them was abundant. (4)When the pollen grains of P. prigida was pulverized for 50minutes at 5,000rpm and P. koraiensis for 40 minutes at 5,000rpm by Overhead stirrer, the 100% of pollen was pulverized.

This study was conducted to analyze the stand structure and growth characteristics along different elevations of Pinus koraiensis natural forests located at mean elevation 1,300 m (site1), 900 m (site2) and 600 m (site3) on Mt. Seorak. Mean DBH and height of P. koraiensis were 25.4 cm and 12.3 m in site1, while that of site2 and 3 were over 40 cm and 20 m, respectively. For this reason, there was 5 times difference of single tree volume between site1 and other sites(p<0.05). Mean ringwidth increment of P. koraiensis was 1.1 mm/yr in site1, 1.5 mm/yr in site2 and 2.6 mm/yr in site3. However, recent growth of ringwidth has increased by 8.6% in site1, whereas site2 and 3 have fallen by approximately 50% over the last 10 years. These results signify that the growth and distribution of natural P. koraiensis are effected by different climatic environment along elevations.
Pine barks are important biomass resources because they are utilised in the production of pine wood and rosins. However, no chemical study has been conducted on the hydrophilic status of pine barks in Indonesia. This aim of this study is to explore the hydrophilic extracts of the barks from six Pinus species (P. elliotii, P. caribeae, P. oocarpa, P. merkusii P. montezumae, and P. insularis). The hydrophilics of pine barks were analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The presence of polyphenol contents in the ethanol extracts obtained from the barks of six Pinus species was determined using the tannin-formaldehyde method, Folin-Cioucalteu assay, and vanillin-HCl assay. The ethanol and hot water soluble extractives derived from inner barks were higher in quantity when compared to those derived from the outer bark samples. The polyphenol measurement showed that the highest value of total phenol content was derived from the outer bark of P. montezumae whereas those of the total phenol and tannin- formaldehyde contents were derived from the inner and outer barks of P. oocarpa. GC-MS analysis revealed that nitrogenous compounds are dominant constituents in the inner and outer barks of the six species, followed by sugars and monophenolics, respectively.
Particleboards (PBs) were made from Pinus densiflora thinning particle with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin added casein and soybean as extender. The performance test results of the PB made showed that Pinus densiflora thinning log was suitable raw material for PB. As the extender addition in the UF resin was increased, the mechanical performance of the PB, bonded with the extended UF resin, were significantly decreased. However, casein and soybean can be used up to 15% and 20% of the UF resin solids respectively.
To analyze the relationship between climatic factors (mean monthly temperature and total precipitation) and tree-ring growths of Pinus densiflora S. et Z. from National Parks (according to region) of the Korea, 20 trees were sampled from 13 National Parks. Only trees that were successfully cross-dated were used for dendrochronological analysis, and at least 11 trees were included. The tree-ring chronology of Mt. Bukhan (covering the shortest period of 1917 - 2016 [100 years]) was assessed, as well as that of Mt. Seorak (covering the longest period of 1687 - 2017 [331 years]). After cross-dating, each ring width series was double-standardized by first fitting a logarithmic curve and then a 50-year cubic spline. The relationships between climate and tree-ring growth were calculated with response function analysis. The results show a significant positive correlation between a given year's February-March temperature, May precipitation levels, and tree-ring growth. It indicates that a higher temperature in early spring and precipitation before cambium activity are important for radial growths of Pinus densiflora in the Korea.

Pine (Pinaceae family such as Pinus densiflora, P. rigida, and P.taeda) has been used as traditional medicine, its various parts (pine needle, bark, sap) have been used for hemostasis, bruises, and burns. These species were reported that have phenolics and flavonoids. We evaluated the anti-inflammation effects of PRT in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced macrophages. These results showed that the ethyl acetate fraction of cone from Pinus rigida x P.taeda (ECRT) stabilized free radicals by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decreasing the production of nitric oxide (NO). ECRT decreased the expressions of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX-2). In addition, ECRT significantly suppressed mRNA levels of inflammation-related factors such as cytokines, iNOS, and COX-2. As a result, ECRT was related to alleviating various pro-inflammatory mediators through IκB/NF-κB signaling pathways, including p65 translocation to the nucleus.

In this study, we report the generation and analysis of a total of 1,211 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from Pinus koraiensis. A cDNA library was generated from the young leaf tissue and a total of 1,211 cDNA were partially sequenced. EST and unigene sequence quality were determined by computational filtering, manual review, and BLAST analyses. In all, 857 ESTs were acquired after the removal of the vector sequence and filtering over a minimum length 50 nucleotides. A total of 411 unigene, consisting of 89 contigs and 322 singletons, was identified after assembling. Also, we identified 77 new microsatellite-containing sequences from the unigenes and classified the structure according to their repeat unit. According to homology search with BLASTX against the NCBI database, 63.1% of ESTs were homologous with known function and 22.2% of ESTs were matched with putative or unknown function. The remaining 14.6% of ESTs showed no significant similarity to any protein sequences found in the public database. Gene ontology (GO) classification showed that the most abundant GO terms were transport, nucleotide binding, plastid, in terms biological process, molecular function and cellular component, respectively. The sequence data will be used to characterize potential roles of new genes in Pinus and provided for the useful tools as a genetic resource.
This study was performed to investigate the growth and photosynthetic rate of ten-years old Pinus koraiensis and Pinus rigida in Banwol industrial region comparing with those of the control site in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. Surface soil of the damaged site in pH 4.2 was more acidic than control site in pH 4.8, assuming the accelerated soil deterioration by acid deposition. The shoot growth, needle survival rate and net photosynthetic rate of P. koraiensis and P. rigida at the damaged site were lower than at the control site. In addition, the quantum yield and chlorophyll a+b and b contents reduced in damaged treatment. These results suggest that an inhibition of photochemical reaction of P. koraiensis and P. rigida at the damaged site of Banwol industrial region could be attributed to combined influence of atmospheric pollution and soil acidification.
The importance value and volume growth percentage, based on the data obtained from 33 quadrats by $relev{\acute{e}}$ method of Mueller-Dombois and Ellenberg, were applied to investigate Pinus thunbergii forests in Taean Haean National Park. The investigation was done from July till September 1996. 1. The dominant species of tree were found in the order of Pinus thunbergii, Quercus dentata, Robinia pseudcacacia, Platycarya strobilacea, Carpinus coreana, Albizzia julibrissin, Pinus densi-thunbergii, and Quercus serrata 2. The volume growth percentage of Pinus thunbergii was about 0.6%~10.5% and the mean of it's was 3.8%. 3. Chemical properties of forest soil showed ranging pH 4.8~6.3, organic matter 1.51~11.79%, $P_2O_5$ 2.5~14.5ppm, $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ 1.3~6.6(me/100g), $Mg^{{+}{+}}$ 0.4~2.6(me/100g), and $K^+$ 0.23~1.89(me/100g).
