  • Acetylcellulose(AC) was prepared with steam exploded wood(EXW) and EXW after delignification with sodium chlorite, pine (Pinus densiflora) and oak (Quercus mongolica) woods. The color of acetylated pine and oak exploded wood was brown, degree of substitution(D.S) of pine was 1.47~2.09, and this of oak was 1.49~2.29. The hemicellulose content of acetylated pine and oak exploded wood was 0~3.4% and 1.49~11.3%, individually. The degree of substitution of acetylated wood prepared from delignified EXW in the pine and oak wood was 0.50~0.71 and 0.70~0.88, individually. Hemicellulose content of acetylated EXW with sodium chlorite after delignification in the pine and oak wood was less than 1% and 0.6~2.5%. The color of acetylated wood after delignification was white. IR-spectra of acetylated pine and oak EXW after delignification were found that peaks at around 1740$cm^{-1}$ and 1200$cm^{-1}$ increase markedly, due to ester carbonyl group.

  • Because the surface of pine wood is very soft, there have been many attempts, like as surface coating, resin impregnation, and densificationt, to harden the surface of wood for its interior use. This study was carried out for surface hardening of pine wood by laminating of melamine resin sheet. The effect of laminating method on the characteristics of melamine resin sheet-laminated wood(MLW) was investigated. Flat-sawn softwoods were suitable for MLW making. And the pre-drying of wood at $105^{\circ}C$ for 30min, before laminating, was effective for preparing of defect-free MLW. The abrasion resistance of pine wood was greatly improved by laminating of melamine resin sheet on its surface. Consequently, the laminating of melamine resin sheet was proved to be a favorable method for improvement of surface abrasiveness of pine wood.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the high-temperature drying characteristics of douglas-fir, hemlock, and radiata pine square timber with dimensions of thickness 15 cm and 18 cm. As a result, radiata pine showed the lowest final moisture content followed by douglas-fir and hemlock without reference to the timber size. Moreover, when the longitudinal kerfing is processed, the final moisture content was lower than control. The kerfing treatment was effective to decreasing the twist of radiata pine and hemlock. When douglas-fir is processed to the shape like the edge-grained timber that does not include the pith, the decrease of drying defect was possible.

  • This study was performed to understand the changes in wood extractives, mainly acetone extracts, in pine woods (Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida) treated by three blue stain fungi (BSF) such as native BSF in Korea, Leptographium sp., screened Albino strain(BSFcs-1) and commercial Cartapip and fungicide, Wood guard. In addition their pulping and bleaching properties were investigated. BSF treatment has significantly reduced acetone extracts, $25.1{\sim}30.4%$ decreasing in red pine and $22.9{\sim}28.1%$ in pitch pine. Three week aging treatment showed about 20% decreasing in red pine and 19.3% in pitch pine. There were not so significant differences in extracts reduction among native BSF and Albino-type strains (Albino strain, BSFcs-1, and commercial Cartapip). But fungicide, Wood guard, treated wood showed relatively lower decreasing rates of extractives, 14% in red pine and 10.1% in pitch pine. Therefore it is understandable that the fungicide could protect the wood from blue stain fungi attack, but has no effect on its extractive reduction. Concerned to pulping properties of BSF and fungicide treated woods, red pine and pitch pine, optimum pulping condition was 20% active alkali, wood to liquor ratio 1 to 6, $170^{\circ}C$, and 2.5 hr. In the case of BSF woods, optimum pulping condition was same as the sound wood, $43.5{\sim}45%$ of pulp yields and $1.3{\sim}1.45%$ of rejects. Screened pulp yield of fungicide treated wood was lower than those of BSF treated woods. Rejects in pulps were higher in fungicide-treated wood than BSF treated woods. Bleaching pulp yields were ranged of 92 to 93.5%. BSF, Cartapip and fungicide treated woods resulted in lower brightness of $55{\sim}58%$, but Albino-type strain(BSFcs-1) $61.3{\sim}62.3%$, very similar to untreated one. Therefore bleaching chemicals could be saved in the processing of chemical pulping.

  • Pine tree death caused by pine wood nematode(PWN) involves phoretic relationships between PWN and its vector Japanese pine sawyer beetle(JPS). In an effort to understand the diversity of fungi involved in PWN life cycle, a total of 176 fungal isolates were collected from PWNs, adults and larvae of JPS, PWN-diseased Japanese black pine that was cut down in 2005 at Jinju, Korea. Based on microscopic observation and colony morphology, and sequence analysis of the ITS rDNA, the fungal isolates were identified at the level of genus. Three genera including Mucor, Ophiostoma, and Penicillium were identified from PWN. Two genera of Ophiostoma and Penicillium were discovered from JPS larvae. Frpm JPS adult beetles, nine genera of Aspergillus, Gibberalla, Hypocrea, Irpex, Leptosphaeria, Ophiostoma, Penicillium, and Plectosphaerella and unknown basidio-mycetes were found. Ten genera from PWN-infected weed were confirmed as Bionectria, Botrytis, Camarops, Fusarium, Hypocrea, Nectria, Mucor, Ophiostoma, Penicillium, and Trichoderma. Penicillium and Ophiostoma were commonly distributed on PWN and its vector and host. This is first report of the fungi associated with PWN and its vector and host in Korea.

  • Steam explosion process is one of the most efficient, pretreatment method for the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. The carbxymethyl-cellulose(CMC) was prepared with steam exploded wood(EXW), pine(Pinus densiflora) and oak(Quercus mongolica), by standard method using isopropyl alcohol and monochloroacetic acid. The range of water solubility of carboxymethylated pine exploded wood was 45.2~66.8 % and those of oak was 60.7~84.7 %. The degree of substitution(D.S) of carboxymethylated pine exploded wood was 0.11~0.33 and oak exploded wood was 0.48~0.76. The color of carboxymethylated pine and oak exploded wood was brown-black. When carboxymethylated EXW was purified by sulfuric acid, the yield of carboxymethylated wood was lower than non-treated one. However, the color was still brown-black although after delignification. In carboxymethylated EXM prepared after delignification, the water solubility and degree of substitution(D.S) of pine were 81.4~95.9 % and 0.71~0.79, and those of oak were 76.2~89.5 % and 0.79~1.05. The values were higher than non-treated. The degree of substitution of purified carboxymethylated wood prepared with delignified EXM, pine and oak were 0.50~0.71 and 0.70~0.88. The color of carboxymethylated wood was white. In carboxymethylated wood preparde after delignification of EXM, swelling ratio and water retention value of pine were 95.9~96.5 and 580.0~751.2, those of oak were 76.2~89.5 and 124.3~307.6.

  • It was examined the key criterion of the time of property revelation as Uljin-Geumgangsong wood. For this purpose, we investigated in physical properties in pine wood (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) and representative Uljin-Geumgangsong wood (Pinus densiflora forma erecta Uyeki). The results are as follows; Air-dry density of Uljin-Geumgangsong wood have higher values over about 20 percent than that of pine wood. And also heartwood rate of Uljin-Geumgansong wood have higher values above 70 percent. The number of vertical resin canals per $1mm^2$ in Uljin-Geumgangsong wood was 40 percent greater than in pine wood. As the average diameters of axial resin canals were 67.8 mm and 67.3~69.9 mm in pine wood and in Uljin-Geumgangsong wood, respectively, there was no significant difference among wood species. There tends to be an increase in diameters as annual rings increase. The number of horizontal resin canals in Uljin-Geumgangsong-1 was approximately 55 percent greater than in pine wood and Uljin-Geumgangsong-2. The number of resin canals in pine wood and Uljin-Geumgangson-2 decreased while it increased in Uljin-Geumgangsong-1 as annual rings increased. No significant difference was found in the number of rays among wood species and between earlywood and latewood of same wood species. As annual rings increased the number of rays decreased in both pine wood and Uljin-Geumgangsong. The heights of rays were greater in pine wood than Uljin-Geumgangsong and no difference was found between earlywood and latewood. In conclusion, rings of tree for the time of property revelation as Uljin-Geumgangsong wood is assumed about more than 150 years.

  • The pine wilt disease is one of the most serious forest diseases that kill the pine trees, and the study on the invasion and movement of the pine wood nematode within the tree is very important for understanding the inhabitation of pine wood nematode. In this relation, the microscopic observation was carried out to study the place of inhabitation and movement of pine wood nematode within the infested wood. In result, the rays were mainly infested by pine wood nematode and showed dark discoloration due to their necrosis in cross, radial and tangential surface. Also, the intensive damage was found in the resin canals. On the other hand, some traumatic resin canals in tangential band were identified in the sapwood near the cambium. In the ray, the pine wood nematode occurred more commonly in the ray parenchyma cell and fusiform ray with horizontal resin canal than in the ray tracheid and uniseriate ray without horizontal resin canal, respectively. The pine wood nematode was thought to move from ray to tracheid through the large natural opening, window-like pit, in the cross-field, neither through the small natural opening, bordered pit, in the tracheid nor through the tracheid wall by creating a bore hole.

  • The pine wood meal was ozonated in acidic water. A 91.3% of lignin and 13% of polysaccharides in pine wood meal were degraded with 180 min ozonation. The phenolic hydroxyl groups of lignin in ozonated wood meals were increased with ozonation time. The vanillin content in nitrobenzene oxidation products of lignin is decreased with 10 min. ozonation and it was slightly increased with ozonation time. The sugar composition of ozonated wood meals showed that the hemicellulose was more susceptible to ozonation than cellulose. The crystallinity of ozonated wood meal was increased.

  • Porous SiC samples were prepared with three types of wood (poplar, pine, big cone pine) by simply embedding the wood charcoal in a powder mixture of Si and $SiO_2$ at 1600 and $1700^{\circ}C$. The basic engineering properties such as density, porosity, pore size and distribution, and strength were characterized. The samples showed full conversion to mostly $\beta$-SiC with good retention of the cellular structure of the original wood. More rigid SiC struts were developed for $1700^{\circ}C$. They showed similar bulk density ($0.5{\sim}0.6\;g/cm^3$) and porosity (81~84%) irrespective of the type of wood. The poplar sample showed three pore sizes (1, 8, $60\;{\mu}m$) with a main size of $60\;{\mu}m$. The pine sample showed a single pore size ($20\;{\mu}m$). The big cone pine sample showed two pore sizes (10, $80\;{\mu}m$) with a main size of $10\;{\mu}m$. The bend strength was 2.5 MPa for poplar, 5.7 MPa for pine, 2.8 MPa for big cone pine, indicating higher strength with pine.
