  • The purpose of this study is to plan a environment for creative education in university campus. According to the literature review, the necessity of improvement of educational program and physical environment is increasing because of rapidly social and industrial structure change. In this aspect, G university decided to make space for creative education utilizing unused space in campus. The space design concept was established as a cell based on the fact that the educational space was a place where students grow up and was named GNU IDEA Factory. The planning site was decided on the existing piloti to solve problems of lack budget and space. This space consisted of rooms for creative education, autonomous students' activity, and exhibition and was designed by organistic structure. In conclusion it was thought that GNU IDEA Factory would be a case of environment for creative education and activity if it was supported proper program and usable equipments.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the seismic performance of RC framed buildings such as piloti buildings and school facilities. For this purpose, a half size RC frame specimen (SFD) was made and the inside of frame was reinforced with steel frame and S type strut steel damper. The experimental results are compared with those of the previous studies under the same conditions. The comparative specimens are non-reinforced specimen (BF) and damper reinforced specimen (AFD) that confined the column with an aramid sheet. As a result of comparing the maximum strength, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity, SFD specimen was evaluated to be better than comparative specimens. According to the experimental results and FE analysis results, it was confirmed that the shear deformation was concentrated in the steel damper. And it was showed that cracks were concentrated at the upper and lower ends of the strut of the S type damper, and the final failure was observed at struts. From this, it was verified that the steel damper appropriately dissipates energy due to the lateral load.

  • In December 2017, a fire at the Jecheon Sports Center caused 29 deaths and 40 injuries, and about 2 billion won in property damage. It is a facility used by unspecified people as a publicly used establishment with a piloti structure. The damage was expanded due to the ignition of combustible exterior materials, Lack of fire protection in horizontal and vertical penetrations. Although legislation has improved since the fire, it is not retroactively applied, increasing the risk of fire in existing buildings. Accordingly, it is necessary to examine the case of the Jecheon Sports Center fire and draw out the problems. In this study, the fire simulation results and the Jecheon Sports Center fire are comparatively analyzed and used as basic data for fire reduction measures in publicly used establishment. As a result of the fire simulation drive, in the case of the second floor, the room temperature exceeded the human life safety standard of 60 ℃ after about 700 seconds had passed. In the case of three floor, it is predicted that the indoor temperature will exceed about 350 ℃. and temporary complexation will occur in the indoor combustibles.

  • This study analyses characteristics of space to facilitate community centering on cases of collective houses in Japan and uses the results as basic data to activate collective houses as an alternative form of housing in our country. To identify the characteristics of space for active communities with collective living space, this study conducted a theoretical examination on collective houses and housing, derived territoriality, accessibility, comfort and safety as factors of community activation and analysed various cases, and the results are presented as follows: First, territoriality is a necessary condition for formation of community, and a confined and physical space. It indicates the proper size of a space and diverse spacial areas which meet the needs of residents with the proper size and amount of space (space which can accommodate diverse generations including women, the aged and the young, flexible space which changes according to the purposes and program, space which supports leisure and hobby activities, and space which can accommodate outsiders). Second, accessibility indicates an environment which supports residents' easy use of space. As the more accessible it is, the higher the frequency of its use, spatial factors (piloti, backyards, benches and tables) should be provided, community space should be arranged in a central or decentralized way and community living space should be made for each floor. As for exits, accessibility should be considered in every way; entrances connected with community spaces, open entrances and entrances accessible from outside or individual living spaces. Third, comfort satisfies the physical and mental needs of residents through separation of floors and flows between the community and individual spaces for privacy and formation of eco-friendly spaces including vegetable gardens, gardens and plant arrangements. Fourth, safety should be considered for a higher quality environment with psychological stability and comfort, for which the following are recommended: installation of hand-rails, removal of thresholds, spacial design for the socially weak, duplex and open type structures for community space, open stages and halls, as well as indoor and outdoor openness through the use of windows.

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate lateral retrofitting effects by FRP and BRB (Buckling-Restrained Brace) for beam-column elements. These results were utilized to establish an analytical model using commercial nonlinear analysis software, PERFORM3D. Concrete and steel analytical models previously proposed by several scholars were adopted for this analytical study. A proposed analysis model showed reasonable accuracy compared with the test results on the beam-column elements strengthened FRP sheets and BRB, as well as with the non-strengthened element subjected to lateral cyclic loadings. Subsequently, the proposed modeling technique for nonlinear analysis would be helpful for preliminary analyses for retrofitting structures, by enabling engineers to estimate the improved capacity of retrofitted structural elements before performing construction.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the structural capacities of beam-column specimens retrofitted with CFRP sheet and BRB (Buckling-Restrained Brace) under sustained axial and cyclic lateral loads. Three specimens were made using different retrofitting methods : non-retrofitted, retrofitted with CFRP sheets only, and retrofitted with both CFRP sheet and BRB systems. Lateral load resistant capacities were evaluated based on the load-displacement relations. From the results, the maximum lateral forces of the FRP sheet retrofitted and both the FRP and BRB retrofitted specimens showed approximately 34% and 138% improvement, respectively, compared with the non-retrofitted specimen.

  • The box system that consists only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs we adopted in many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed in Korea. Recently, many of the box system buildings with pilotis has been constructed to meet the architectural design requirements. This structure has abrupt change in the structural properties between the upper and lower parts divided by transfer girders. For an accurate analysis of a structure with pilotis, it is necessary to have the buildings modeled into a finer mesh. But it would cost tremendous amount of computational time and memory. In this study, an efficient method is proposed for an efficient analysis of buildings those have pilotis with drastically reduced time and memory. In the proposed analysis method, transfer gilders are modeled using super elements developed by the matrix condensation technique and fictitious beams are introduced to enforce the compatibility conditions at the boundary of each element. The analyses of example structures demonstrated that the proposed method used for the analysis of a structure with pilotis will provide analysis results with accuracy for the design of box system buildings.

  • Focusing on the creation of a new han ok, especially a mid-rise hybrid-structured Han-ok, this study proposes a middle-rise (four-story) Han-ok on one and two lots located in Seoun-dong, the existing Han-ok intensive housing site in downtown Cheongju. 1) In terms of layout and function, according to the existing L-shaped Han-ok corresponding to the road and the direction, the parking lots and shops on the 1st floor, the business facility on the 2nd floor, the Han-ok on the 3rd and 4th floors are placed. There are yards, open roof yards, and semi-open Daecheong(大廳, main hall), which can be shared by residents. 2) In terms of structure and form, one or two floors (some 3 floors) are 5.4m square and 5.4×6.6m modules of the RC(Reinforced Concrete) group, and the upper floor reflects the 2.7m module, size and shape of the existing Han-ok. By extending the outer wall of the RC group in the lower floors (1st to 3rd floors) to the wooden exterior of the upper floors (2nd to 4th floors), it is attempted to avoid the awkward appearance of the RC group being exposed to wooden structures. And it is also attempted to reflect the wooden shape and design elements through the elevation elements such as horizontal windows, corner windows, picture frames, and vertical slits. 3) In environmental control and facilities, it is attempted to smooth the ventilation of the building by forming a vertical upward airflow from the dark space of the low floor to the positive of the upper floor. This doubles the effect through a vertical rise of cold air generated in a narrow alleyway, piloti parking lot, and the various voids. In addition to the Daecheong and Numaru(loft) of Han ok, the rooftop yard, the terrace, and the balcony, horizontal natural ventilation is generated through divided doors and transom windows.

  • This study started by examining 24 newly-built elementary schools in Sejong City with regard to their present conditions of in-between space. After categorizing the space according to its spatial composition, 5 schools were selected and analyzed in relation to the current status and frequency of use of their in-between space. Among the (other schools, the analysis gave the following results: 1) There was much higher usage of the in-between space for rest/play than for learning, which suggested that more rest/play area and apparatus should be provided. 2) Piloti areas were preferred, and a greater number of activities took place in these places than in the adjoining open areas. 3) When the in-between space was combined with a passage (as in the case of E2 and E3), a separation must be provided in order not to interfere with the rest/play activities. 4) In planning the in-between space, priority should be given to activities over landscape purposes. 5) Diverse and easy access to the space must be planned, particularly as the main entrance is not directly connected to the space. Entry at the end of an adjacent building could be a possible solution.
