Response of reinforced concrete (RC) column-bent piers subjected to bidirectional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. RC column-bent piers represent one of the most popular shapes of piers used in Korea highway bridges. Four column-bent piers were constructed in 400 mm diameter and 2,000 mm height. Each pier has two circular supporting columns. These piers were tested under bidirectional lateral load reversals with an axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. The test parameters included : different transverse reinforcement contents and lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels. Test results indicate that the lap splice of longitudinal reinforcing steels have significantly influenced on hysteretic response of column-bent piers similar to previous test results for single columns with corresponding test parameters. Column capacity was changed with the level of transverse confinement. From the comparison of test result for single column under unidirectional loading, the damage of single column was concentrated on lower plastic hinge region but the damage of column-bent piers was scattered to upper and lower plastic hinge region.
The pile group foundation is widely used for gravity pier of high-speed railway bridges in China. If a moderate or strong earthquake occurs, the pile-surrounding soil will exhibit obvious nonlinearity and significant pile group effect. In this study, an improved pushover analysis model for the pile group foundation with consideration of pile group effect is presented and validated by the quasi-static test. The improved model uses simplified springs to simulate the soil lateral resistance, side friction and tip resistance. PM (axial load-bending moment) plastic hinge model is introduced to simulate the impact of the axial force changing of pile group on their elastic-plastic characteristics. The pile group effect is considered in stress-stain relations of the lateral soil resistance with a reduction factor. The influence factors on nonlinear characteristics and plastic hinge distribution of the pile group foundation are discussed, including the pier height, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and stirrup ratio of the pile, and soil mechanical parameters. Furthermore, the displacement ductility factor, resistance increase factor and yielding stiffness ratio are provided to evaluate the seismic performance of soil-pile system. A case study for the pile group foundation of a railway simply supported beam bridge with a 32 m-span is conducted by numerical analysis. It is shown that the ultimate lateral force of pile group is not determined by the yielding force of the single one in these piles. Therefore, the pile group effect is essential for the seismic performance evaluation of the railway bridge with pile group foundation.

The maintenance of bridges installed in rivers is carried out through facility safety inspection and repair & reinforcement procedures according to the results. Many studies have been so far conducted on the safety check of the bridge upperstructure because of the ease of access. However as it is impossible to directly investigate whether the pier foundation installed in the river has been scoured. Management of underwater foundations has remained based on theory. In this study, the scour of the bridge foundation installed in such a river was realized in 3D form by using an echo sounder and VRS. This made it possible to predict the scour pattern through comparison and analysis with the ground height of the riverbed at the time of the bridge installation. Based on these results, if the pier foundation is used as an initial data to determine whether or not local scour is present and to predict long-term scouring, bridge collapse due to foundation scour can be prevented.

Korea has recently selected twenty-two ports for reinforcement breakwater installation of protection facilities, due to rise sea level caused by global warming and increase in the number of typhoon and tsunami. In addition, due to consistent enlargement of ship size, dredging for depth of water for large vessel's berthing and enlargement of berth is under construction. However, no definite construction plan for the reinforcement and lengthening of crown height, which has close relationship with the safe mooring of ships. In this study, domestic and foreign design criteria of crown height were analyzed, and the crown height evaluation index and evaluation method were developed by dividing it into environment and ship elements. In particular, in the case of ship evaluation index, each step was set up in 4 steps according to domestic and foreign regulations, weighted by each step, and the safety level of crown height was evaluated. As a result of the mooring safety simulation of the 100,000 ton cruise ship, the appropriate minimum crown height standard was derived to be 3 m above A.H.H.W. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data to propose the crown height standard reflecting ship characteristics.
In this study, scale down model bridge piers were fabricated and non-destructive experiments conducted with an impact load to determine scours in the ground adjacent to the bridge piers using the natural frequency of the bridge piers. Three scale-model bridge piers with different heights were fabricated, and they penetrated the ground at a depth of 0.35 m. The scours around the bridge piers were simulated as a side scour and foundation scour. The experiments were conducted in 13 steps, in which scouring around the model bridge piers was performed in 0.05 m excavation units. To derive the natural frequency, the impact load was measured with three accelerometers attached to the model bridge piers. The impact load was applied with an impact hammer, and the top of the model bridge pier was struck perpendicularly to the bridge axis. The natural frequency according to the scour progress was calculated with a fast Fourier transform. The results demonstrated that the natural frequency of each bridge pier tended to decrease with scour progress. The natural frequency also decreased with increasing pier height. With scour progress, a side scour occurred at 70% or higher of the initial natural frequency, and a foundation scour occurred at less than 70%.

This study proposed an estimation method of allowable wave height for loading and unloading of the ship considering ship motion that is affected by ship sizes, mooring conditions, wave periods and directions. The method was examined validity by comparison with wave field data at pier $8^{th}$ in Pohang new harbor. The wave field data obtained with wave height of 0.10~0.75m and wave period of 7~13s in ship sizes of 800~35,000ton when a downtimes have occurred. On the other hand, the results of allowable wave height for loading and unloading of the ship in this method have obtained with wave heights of 0.19~0.50m and wave periods of 8~12s for ship sizes of 5,000, 10,000 and 30,000ton. Thus this method well reproduced the field data respond to various a ship sizes and wave periods. And the results of this method tended to decrease in 16~62% when have considered long wave, and it is decreased in 0~46% when didn't consider long wave than design standards in case of the ship sizes of 5,000~30,000ton, wave period of 12s and wave angle of $75^{\circ}C$. The allowable wave heights for loading and unloading of the ship proposed by design standards are didn't respond to various the ship sizes and wave periods, and we have found that the design standards has overestimated on smaller than 10,000ton.

Scale model tests were performed to investigate the seismic behavior and capacity of reinforced concrete piers that were not detailed for seismic load. The prototype pier is of solid circular section. Additional lateral reinforcing bars were not provided that might be required for the confinement. Two kinds of reinforcement details are considered for the vertical longitudinal reinforcing bars: lap spliced and continuous. In the case of lap spliced model all the longitudinal bars were lap spliced at the same height in the bottom plastic hinge zone. Three specimens were constructed and subjected to quasi-static cyclic lateral loading while the vertical load held constant. Non-ductile failure modes were observed in the test of lap spliced models but limited ductile behavior was observed in the test of a continuous longitudinal reinforcement model.

A RC column-bent pier represents one of the most popular piers used in highway bridges. Seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) column-bent piers under bidirectional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. Six column bent-piers were constructed with two circular supporting columns which were made in 400mm diameter and 2,000mm height. Test parameters are different transverse reinforcement and loading pattern. These piers were tested under lateral load reversals with the axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Three specimens were subjected to bidirectional lateral load cycles which consisted of two main longitudinal loads and two sub transverse loads in one load cycle. Other three specimens were loaded in the opposite way. Test results indicated that lateral strength and ductility of the latter three specimens were generally bigger than those of the former three specimens. Plastic hinges were formed with the spall of cover concrete and the fracture of the longitudinal reinforcing steels in the bottom plastic hinge of two supporting columns for the former three specimens. Similar behavior was observed in the top and bottom parts of two supporting columns for the latter three specimens.

n the event of an earthquake, additional stresses can occur in the continuous welded rails (CWR) of High-speed railway (HSR) bridges due to relative displacements at expansion joints, and this stress can cause derailment. The amplification of ground motion occurs as a result of site effects, and this is pronounced at the site of a soft surface soil layer and of a rigid surface soil layer over a soft one. As a result, the amplified ground motion leads to an amplified seismic response in HSR bridges. A change in bridge pier height affects the seismic behavior of the bridge. A HSR bridge with gravel ballast tracks will show different dynamic behavior during an earthquake than one with concrete ballast tracks. The seismic responses of HSR bridges and their CWR are analyzed considering the derailment-inducing factors.
In order to investigate the seismic behavior of highway bridges under near-fault earthquakes, a parametric study was conducted for different regular and irregular bridges. To this end, an existing regular viaduct Highway Bridge was used as a reference model and five irregular samples were generated by varying span length and pier height. The seismic response of the six highway bridges was evaluated by three dimensional non-linear response history analysis using an ensemble of far-fault and scenario-based near-fault records. In this regard, drift ratio, input and dissipated energy as well as damage index of bridges were compared under far- and near-fault motions. The results indicate that the drift ratio under near-fault motions, on the average, is 100% and 30% more than far-fault motions at DBE and MCE levels, respectively. The energy and damage index results demonstrate a dissipation of lower energy in piers and a significant increase of collapse risk, especially for irregular highway bridges, under near-fault ground motions.
